Pedro and WAR/9
With news of my favorite pitcher Pedro Martinez on his way to retirement I decided to take a look (again) at his career stats on Fangraphs. When looking at the leader boards for pitcher WAR for a single season I noticed Pedro's top seasons were all surrounded by seasons where other pitchers had significantly more innings pitched than Pedro. That got me to wondering about fWAR/9 IP. (I had also recently been thinking about fWAR/PA but haven't gotten around to looking at that yet.)

Bring In Some Fish
With the Marlins falling further out of contention the buzz has been that they could become sellers by the trade deadline. The Marlins could have what we need to push us to the postseason. The Marlins have a few attractive pieces that would more than adequately suit the Mets needs for not only this year but for the next few years.
Trade Partner: Astros
Trade Partner: Royals
Trade Partner: Diamondbacks
According to MLB Trade Rumors the D-Backs are open to trade talks for anyone but Upton and Kennedy. The Mets seem like ideal trade partners as they are maybe a few players away from being serious contenders.
An Unlikely Trade.
Even with the recent and awesome home stand I think we can all agree that it really doesn't mean all that much. Yes, it is a great sign and showed that we are capable of that type of play. However, the Mets haven't won a playoff spot yet, let alone the division. If the Mets want to do that, there are a few holes that can be filled by a trade:
Receive: Aaron Harang, Brandon Phillips, and Fransisco Cordero
Trade: Brad Holt, John Maine, Reese Havens, Captain Kirk, Daniel Murphy, Dillon Gee
The logic: The Reds don't look like they are going to compete for a playoff spot this year and their management may feel that Harang, Phillips, and Cordero are expendable because of their salaries and Phillips/Harang's poor starts this year (which may decrease their value). In return they arae getting a solid 2B, SP, and OF prospect, along with a pitching "prospect" without much upside, a SP who has upside but mental/physical concerns, and a MLB average 1B/utility man.
The Mets on the other hand would be receiving a 29 year old 2B who has averaged about 3 WAR the past couple of years and peaked at 5 a few years ago, a 32 year old SP who has averaged about 2 WAR the past couple of years and a 5 WAR pitcher the 2 years before that (and who's outpitched his ERA significantly the past couple of years) , and a 35 year old solid closer who has had a FIP under 3.77 since 2002. These 3 players would solidify the Mets bullpen, rotation, defense, lineup, and bench without giving away too much. The negatives for the Mets would be a pretty significant increase in payroll, minor league depth, and question marks surrounding Harang/Cordero being a set-up man.
Harang has had xFIPs of 4.18, 3.89, and 4.15 from 2008 to now. The 3 years before that his xFIPs were all below 4. His biggest problems have been high BABIPs and HR/FB % both of which would likely improve with a trade to the Mets considering their solid defense and large home stadium compared to Cincy's homer pad. He would be under contract for this year and next. He should rebound and have a good year.
If I were Omar I would definitely make this trade as it would give the Mets a great young infield, a good SP, and a good set up man. It could be the push that makes the Mets playoff worthy.
Iannetta Anybody?
It appears as if the Rockies either 1) hate Chris Iannetta and truly believe Olivo/whoever they're calling up for Iannetta are better than Iannetta or 2) like Iannetta and want him to develop in the minors a bit more. Either way it would seem that the move to send Iannetta to the minors hurts the Rockies chances (albeit not by much) at winning the most games. Along with the Mets not having a truly good/great catcher since Piazza and no sure thing at catcher in the minors (settle down Thole fans) Iannetta could be a great steal by Omar (if he was smart enough to realize it).
If the Kazmir trade never happened...
I was watching tonight's game when I saw Scott Kazmir's line scroll along the bottom of the screen and wondered what it would be like if the Mets kept Kazmir, Omar was still hired at the same point, and the Mets didn't feel the need to trade for Johan. I also would like to point out that this is me purely thinking, obviously no one knows what actually would have happened.

Daniel Murphy's Future?
With fan favorite Daniel Murphy coming back from the DL relatively soon and Ike Davis seemingly staying in the bigs for the long haul, the question of The Irish Hammer's future with the organization remains in question.
Mike Lowell Still Expects To Be Traded
I think that trading Castillo and a lower level prospect for Lowell could be a good idea if the Mets still have money to spend. Lowell would fit in with Omar's offseason plan of signing great guys with great clubhouse presence. He could platoon with Murphy at 1B and fill in for Wright on the few days he takes off. They could then sign Felipe Lopez for a year. I would also love for the Mets to sign Maya but that really doesn't have much to do with the trade outside of financial concerns.
What's Left To Do...
Pitchers and catchers report in a bout a month or so and there is still work that needs to be done for Omar and co. Here is what I think they should realistically do to be successful not only in 2010 but beyond.
Ideally how the rest of the offseason should go....
