The Phinsider What's wrong with the Dolphins

This team should have two priorities:

1) Running game - what happened to the dominate running game we saw last year?  This was the strength of our team, I'm all for Brandon Marshall getting his catches but would he be even better if anyone was worried about Miami's running game.  And doesn't that also take pressure off the Defense.  I just don't understand it.  We dumped most of our OL from last year and went backwards.  As much as I like the personality of the coaching staff when it comes to a winning attitude and toughness, I question some of their decisions.  I don't see how making major changes to the OL was a great idea when it was one of the bright spots of the team.  This should be our NUMBER ONE priority on offense not Henne.  I'd like to see what he could do if we could run the ball like we did last year, with Brandon Marshall and Bess as his primary targets.  How did we get so far away from that?

2) Defense - the defense is still giving up the big play and not CONSISTENTLY making game changing plays.  One game they can stop AP on a goal line stand and then they allow a short yard screen to turn into a long play due to poor tackling.  Inconsistency defines this unit.  The pieces are obviously there.  Everyone praises Vonte Davis, Wake, Dansby but when is this unit going to step up and play to there potential.

Then of course we can't forget we've lost games solely on special teams.

Food for thought!!

The Phinsider Did anyone see the article on the Dolphins FO?

Did anyone else see this article?  Just curious what kind of comments people have.

Ireland’s, Dolphins’ arrogance unacceptable

My first comment would be in regards specifically to Parcell's.  I've heard many former players use expletives to describe Parcell's but in the same sentence thank him for being responsible for driving their success.  This is football, not for the thin skinned.  If you've ever heard Simm's talk about his relationship with Parcell's, it's like a love/hate relationship.

On the other hand it's one thing to have Parcell's or the coach drive the team but somethings are just not going to build the team?  I think we should have been handled JT and Zack Thomas differently.  Let Zack leave with the respect he deserves for a great career and JT, how do we let him get away to another AFC East team????

Overall there has to be mixed reviews at teams moves.  All in all positive but too many errors (cutting Porter too early, mishandling Ryan Clark's visit, JT and Zack) for a top team.  These types of things won't necessarily hurt the teams ability to compete but it just looks bad.

And of course if we were winning would anyone really care?

The Phinsider Be Patient

First, on offense, I have no problem saying that Miami with this trade have move into the top ten on offense with the Marshall trade.  They already had a high powered running game, they have an excellent possession receiver in Bess (don't be surprised if the Marshall acquisition elevates him to the Pro Bowl, maybe a little over excited but hey think about it, you double cover BM, stack the box to shut down the running game and that leaves Bess one on one).

Second, defense, this is my concern.  We were BAD last year, Ferg is suspended and we don't have another NT at his level.  QB pressure, we are not getting consistent pressure (we need JT back).  FS is a big question mark?  This draft is huge, we've improved with the addition of Dansby and hopefully Nolan make some of our existing guys better but we need at least 3 or 4 new starters on defense out of this draft.

At least we don't have to gamble on Dez Bryant, Marshall will be an immediate impact guy and we can focus now on the defense.  If this team is going to be a force past the regular season they need to improve on defense right away.

The Phinsider REPLY: Ginn Trade? Rebuttal

All the Ginn LOVERS are missing the point.  This has nothing to do with Ginn, it's about the team and the needs of the team.

Last year Miami was 4th in rushing, 15th in PPG and 17th in YPG.  They were 2nd in both 3rd and 4th down conversion %.  The point is the offense isn't that bad.  And that was with Ronnie Brown and Patrick Cobb injured (fortunately we have lots of depth at RB).  Our defense?  That is another story, that is where we need the most help.

So how much does Ginn contribute?  Very little.  Why?  Does it really matter why?  I've heard Ginn is the teams biggest weapon and teams are keying on him because he is our #1 receiver.  REALLY??  Our running game isn't our biggest threat?  Are defenses really keying on a player who has 5 TD in 3 seasons?  FACT!! Teams take Ginn out of the game with one CB and we are not talking about Pro Bowl CB's week in and week out.  They don't need to double team Ginn.

THE POINT.  The team is looking for a receiver to replace Ginn and has been.  That should tell you something.  If the team finds a true #1 WR they are not going to bench Cam and Bess.  One of those two will start and Ginn will be a #3 or 4.  He will be used for gimmick plays and situational plays.  He would probably help the offense more in those circumstances than he does today as a starter.  Just not what you expect from the #9 pick.  Not Ginn's fault, he should never have been a high 1st round pick (Poor Draft decision).  Ginn is a bust as a draft pick not as a player.

BACK TO THE POINT.  We are getting limited production from Ginn, he probably won't start so IF we do get an offer should we take it?  And what is the best we could get?  There are a lot of glaring needs on the team, mostly defense.  We want to upgrade WR but that is not our most glaring need, it's defense.

Second

Take a look at the top ten WR in the league in terms of yards:

Andre Johnson, Wes Welker, Miles Austin, Sidney Rice, Reggie Wayne, Randy Moss, Santonio Holmes, Steve Smith, Vincent Jackson, Hines Ward.

Then look at the top 10 in TD's receptions:

Vernon Davis, Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, Roddy White, Miles Austin, Visanthe Shiancoe, Brandon Marshall, Dallas Clark, Reggie Wayne, Chad Ochocinco

Do you see a pattern?  Not blazing speed, at least not the pattern anyways.  It's toughness, they are not afraid to go for a ball or yards after the catch.  These are the names that defenses fear, NOT TED GINN......  If anyone was does have the average speeds of these guys please post it...  I would love to really prove the point.  In fact if you know a little about football some scouts will say 40 speed is overrated because how ofter does a player really run 40 yards.  Most plays are not 40 yard dashes.

I'm sure the Ginn Lovers will come up with some kind of rebuttal on why we should scrap our focus on our 4th ranked rushing game and rebuild the offense around Ginn so he can finally excel.  Really??  I mean Really??

The Phinsider Ginn trade??

Ravens need a WR, would they trade for Ginn?  Cam loves Ginn, what would the Dolphins get?  A #2, that would be great for the Fins?  Would it be worth trading him for a #3 or lower draft pick.  I know in some fans eyes they want him cut regardless but I don't think he is quite that bad.  If all he did was kick returns he is worth keeping for now.  But if we a draft pick I like it but how much would we get?  #1, come on Cam help us out here....  give us your #1 since you took ours......
