As mediocre as the SEC East turned out to be, between Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi State, the top five in the West went 40-2 against the rest of college football. (The only losses:: Alabama's 35-21 loss to South Carolina in October and Arkansas' 31-26 Sugar Bowl loss to Ohio State last week.)

Dr. Saturday spells it out in case there was any doubt which is the best division in the country.

It's, oh, 27 hours until Illinois and Northwestern kick off. But they'll be kicking off in one direction, every time, because one end zone goes right up against the brick and ivy walls [of Wrigley Field]....All offensive possessions will head toward the West end zone. That means, if there's a fumble recovery or an interception, both teams will pack up and move to the other end of the field to make sure the drives aren't going East.

Deadspin. Further proof that Big Ten football is a joke. It's not like the dimensions of a football field or Wrigley Field have changed in the past six months.

Armageddon Is Upon Us: Big Ten to split Ohio State and Michigan

2

Multiple ESPN sources are claiming that the new Big Ten divisions will be split as follows: Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern and Minnesota. And Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana and Illinois. Presumably, the schedule would be set like the SEC's with annual cross-division rivalry games. Frankly, splitting Wisconsin from Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska makes less sense to me than splitting Ohio State and Michigan.

2010 as told by NCAA Football 11

I've been playing NCAA Football 11 very irregularly for the past couple of weeks so I finally finished the 2010 season in my first dynasty season yesterday and, as always, was very intrigued by the...

If it substantiates the Bush charges, the [NCAA] could find that he played for USC while ineligible and vacate the wins in which he took part. That would be the BCS' cue. Its policy stipulates: "When the NCAA or a conference makes a finding of violations … and imposes a sanction of forfeiture or vacation of contests in which an ineligible student-athlete participated, we will presume that vacation of participation in a BCS bowl game is warranted." That's if the player in question participated in that BCS game or in victories that led to the bowl berth.

I've assumed all along that, no matter what penalties the NCAA brought down on USC, it wouldn't cost the Trojans their title because the NCAA has no control over the BCS. But the USA Today has an interesting article today talking about how the BCS established a new bylaw in 2007 that says the BCS can vacate a BCS bowl win if an NCAA-ruled ineligible player participated. I would hope the NCAA would no longer recognize a champion if it did not win the championship game. Unfortunately, this would further fuel the Auburn crowd. OTS: This is a great point by USA Today, and it seems to be a very reasonable reading and an equally reasonable application thereof. It would be interesting to see what direction the BCS would move in from there, if the '04 title indeed was vacated. I highly doubt they would award it to anyone else, I imagine it would be, much like the 1984 SEC championship, a situation where there is just no champion for that year. Who knows? I do know that if it comes to fruition, those guys over at Onepeat are going to have some changes to make.

It must be nice to be Kirby Smart....Per terms of new deal and raise Smart received from UA, the assistant coach is set to receive an additional $34,400 bonus just for showing up to work today (March 1st).

AL.com reports that Smart's deal included a nice bonus yesterday (presumably to keep him from leaving before spring practice). h/t EDSBS

Alabama, with one first-place vote, starts out the 2010 campaign with a second-place ranking, after finishing last season with a 54-11 record.

The Crimson Tide softball team opens the season at number two, behind the reigning NCAA Champion Washington Huskies. It looks to be a tough schedule for the Tide this year as they will have games against ten teams ranked in the preseason Top 25, including no. 3 Michigan, no. 5 Florida, no. 8 Georgia, and no. 9 Missouri. The Tide will open the season with a three-game series against Missouri on the 13th and 14th of February.

1. Vols can't scale Mt. Cody...Cody's second critical block of the game reverberated even more loudly two-and-a-half months later, when the unbeaten Tide finished off Texas for a BCS title win that probably wouldn't have been possible without a 6'5", 360-pound elephant getting his mammoth paw in the path of Lincoln's kick. Every now and then, size matters. Dr. Saturday weighs in on the season's best plays, placing Rocky Block at no. 1 and Marcell Dareus's Championship Game interception return at no. 7.

Notre Dame to hire Cincinnatti Head Coach Brian Kelly

"The problem isn't that the Irish are going with Kelly, who might turn out to be the next Urban Meyer, it's that it didn't appear that AD Jack Swarbrick and the powers-that-be made an honest run at the real Urban Meyer. "

Cody named finalist for Nagurski award

Terrence Cody is one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player by the Football Writers' Association of America. Cody is joined by Iowa's Pat Angerer, Tennessee safety Eric Berry, TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes, and Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

Mark Ingram named SEC Offensive Player of the Week

It was kind of an obvious choice, but Alabama running back Mark Ingram was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week for his 24 carry, 246 yard performance against South Carolina. It was the second time this year that Ingram has been so honored (Virginia Tech).

OK St.'s Dez Bryant suspended for the season

+

"Bryant, an All-American who is ranked ninth overall on Mel Kiper Jr.'s most recent Big Board, was ruled ineligible by the school because he failed to fully disclose his interaction with a former NFL player to the NCAA. Oklahoma State has already begun the process of applying to the NCAA for Bryant's reinstatement, the school said. He sat out Oklahoma State's last game against Grambling State."

Creative Top 25

I got bored at work this evening, so I decided to create the Top 25 that many bloggers and blog readers seem to be clamoring for: a Top 25 in which no team is ranked above a team it has lost to. ...

Every assumption painted Greg McElroy as the cliché, "just ask him not to lose the game" kind of passer in a paleolithic, run-based attack, but he's hardly been that: McElroy is not only third nationally (and best in the SEC) in efficiency, but also ranks third in yards per attempt, and is averaging just shy of 15 yards per completion.

2009 Herbie Awards

I know we typically eschew big media predictions here, but Kirk Herbstreit had some interesting picks that I thought were worth reflecting on. 1) Top Wide Receiver - Julio Jones, #2 behind Dez Bryant 2) Top 1st-year QB Starters - Greg McElroy, #1 3) Top Defensive Tackles - Terrence Cody, #3 4) Top Inside Linebackers - Rolando McClain - #2 behind Brandon Spikes 5) Top Return Men - Javier Arenas, #3 6) Top True Freshmen - Trent Richardson, #3 7) Household Names by the End of September - Mark Ingram, #1

Alabama signee Kayla Braud finishes her high school career on a 103-game hitting streak.

2

Kayla Braud (pronounced "bro"), was already riding a national high school record 73-game hitting streak when she signed a letter of intent to join the Crimson Tide softball team in 2009. She kept the streak--which started her freshman year--intact throughout her senior season and capped her final year with an Oregon state championship and a record 103-game hitting streak (the previous record was 46 games).

How much would you pay to see a Heisman winner steamroll a conference foe?

The lovely Kansas Jayhawks will be hosting the Oklahoma Sooners just an hour up the road this season and my sadistic side wants to head up in order to see Sam Bradford drop double-nickels on KU. Unfortunately, the Jayhawks have decided to combine the OU game with Iowa State and Duke in an effort to sell more tickets to the crappy games. In other words, the only way to get a single-game OU ticket (not counting scalpers, obviously) is to drop $150 for all three games. Is it worth it?

Alabama nets record-setting 14-0 win over Arizona

Facing elimination from the WCWS, the Alabama Crimson Tide brought out the sticks, scoring an NCAA record 14 runs in eliminating the Arizona Wildcats. The Tide also set the record for largest margin of victory in a WCWS game. There is one more game on the schedule today for Alabama as they will take on Arizona State this evening at 8:30pm CST on ESPN. The winner of that game will then face Florida tomorrow.
