The Hit On October 11, 2008, the Tennessee Volunteers played the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Georgia. While the Tennessee Volunteers lost the game, Eric Berry walked away with an earth-shaking hit on tailback, Knowshon Moreno. The hit caused Knowshon to lose control of his bladder. After the hit, Knowshon laid down on the sideline while trainers patted his pants dry and made sure he capable of standing. As of the current day, Knowshon Moreno lives and can fortunately still use his motor functions, although it is rumored that he suffers from depression and self-confidence issues after the mind-blowing hit. Video of the above event can be found on YouTube.

Hamilton said finances won’t be an issue if a change is made. He said there is a $7 million reserve in place to cover such unforeseen expenses. That would nearly cover the cost of the football coaches’ buyouts, which Hamilton said could be over $7.5 million. That figure depends on whether coaches are hired elsewhere. UT also will receive an extra $15 million from the SEC’s new deal with television partner ESPN, which would give UT more flexibility to fire and hire coaches.

So, is this season going to end up more like 2005 or 1994? Let's hope for 94.

If you read through the comments (which I’ve warned before not to do), you’ll get a nice cross section of Tennessee fans and their opinions on the subject. The idea of using black on the uniforms was posted at some point, and that is where we discover that unfortunately, the old adage of opinions being like assholes holds true to this day. First off, you’ve got your traditionalists who don’t like any messing with the traditional uniforms that were traditionally worn by traditional players in "traditional" times traditionally… tradition. Nevermind the fact that the "Power T" that we know and love today has only been traditional since the 70’s, and also nevermind the fact that Tennessee has in fact, worn black as part of the color scheme for quite some time:

This is Georgia's year. This is the time when everything has to come together for a national championship. An SEC title would be nice, another BCS appearance would be solid, but unless Richt is holding that crystal football in Miami at around 11:30 p.m. on January 8, 2009, this season will be a failure. While that might seem harsh, with the level of excellence set by the rest of the SEC when it comes to winning national titles, it's an all or nothing year for a Dawg team that's really that good.

No one will predict the Vols to win much of anything considering offensive coordinator David Cutcliff left to take over the head coaching gig at Duke, and four-year starting QB Erik Ainge is done, but Dave Clawson’s offense worked by the end of spring ball and new starter Jonathan Crompton is a sharp, accurate passer who should grow into the type of leader who can carry a team. And then there’s the schedule. It’s brutal early with road trips to UCLA, Auburn and Georgia and a home date with Florida, but the Vols can win two of those, and if they win three, look out. The rest of the slate is relatively easy, the team should get much better as the year goes on, and once again, an under-the-radar run could lead the way to another SEC East title.

Editor's note: I'm no more thrilled about having a known terrorist mastermind contributing to this Web site than any of you are to be reading it, but I hunted high and low for a celebrity who'd be willing to do the Tennessee preview and none of them wanted anything to do with it, not even Dolly Parton. But my great-aunt used to work for the State Department in the Middle East, and she knows a guy who knows a guy, and through them I found out that Osama is a huge Tennessee fan. Like, huge. In fact, 9/11? Was planned specifically to postpone the Tennessee-Florida game until December so that the Vols could get their s*** together. So anyway, he agreed to do the preview, and here it is. Please don't shoot me.

10. (NR) Tennessee 11 verbal commitments Wide receiver Je'Ron Stokes (Philadelphia/North East) is a much needed vertical threat and Damien Thigpen (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) is lightning in a bottle and would be great for David Clawson's offense, but he might be tailored for the corner position.

John Chavis, Tennessee: Regarded as one of the best linebacker coaches in the country, Chavis became defensive coordinator in 1995 and helped win a national championship three years later. UT has had 11 linebackers taken in the draft since 1999. One study found that Tennessee had the most former d-linemen on NFL rosters in 2007 with 11.

When Fulmer assumed the reins of the UT football program in the spring of 1993, the Vols had gone 53-17-4 over the previous six years under Johnny Majors. That represented a 74.3 winning percentage, and fans expected that Fulmer would maintain that level of success. Instead, Fulmer raised the bar. Between 1993 and 2001, his teams went 91-20 – a winning percentage of 82.0 – and picked up a national title. Expectations skyrocketed, and so did Fulmer's salary. Tennessee's record, however, did not keep pace. From 2002-2007 the Vols went 52-25, a winning percentage of 67.5. As a rule, coaches who win two-thirds of their games do not make $2.99 million per year. The fact UT just gave Fulmer a $940,000 annual raise and an extension through 2014 suggests the administration is expecting the next five years to be better than the previous five.

Now the Tennessee Volunteers are a hard team to figure out. In all honesty, the team was lucky to be playing for the SEC title last year. The race in the East is between UT, UF, and UGA every year, and that triad of teams beat each other. Florida blasted Tennessee, which in turn the Volunteers did the same to Georgia, and then Georgia beats Florida to keep Tennessee right in the race. Along with the beat down from Florida, there were also blowout losses against Cal and Alabama, and a slew of close games, that only a senior quarterback can get a team through. Fast forward to this season and say goodbye Eric Ainge and hello to Jonathan Crompton and new offensive coordinator Dave Clawson. Last year’s squad was out gained by an average of 32.7 yards per game, and a new quarterback and coordinator are supposed to fix that? Crompton and Clawson also do not have the luxury of settling in to their respective roles because of the early season schedule which include UCLA, Florida, and Auburn. This team can’t get off to the same 2-2 start as last year. The defense should be good after ending the season in great fashion, but do lose last year’s best player Jerod Mayo and talented safety Jonathan Hefney.

This is the first chance to see exactly how UT fans to define itself offensively. No doubt the larger goal is ‘balance,’ but that means a sizeable contribution from Jonathan Crompton, whose appearances from the bench were rare underwhelming.
