A's sign Cespedes: 4 years/36 million
I've mixed feelings because if he becomes a star, I'll be happy he went to Oakland. However, if he turns out to be a bust, I'll be sad that he didn't become a Marlin.
MLB.com's top 100 Prospects
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2012/index.jsp
Braves come in at numbers 4, 36, 42, 65,and 91. Pretty good showing considering the young guys already on the squad. I took the time to place the Braves players' analysis in the post but I'd recommend scanning through the prospects. The setup is quite user friendly.
4. Julio Teheran:
Statistically speaking: His FIP (fielding independent pitching) of 3.06 was a bit higher than his actual ERA of 2.55, meaning Teheran had some good fortune in 2011. That’s not bad by any means and his .288 BABIP (batting average on balls in play) was lower than the .300 average for pitchers. His hits-per-nine-innings rate of 7.7 was right in line with his career average as well.
Scouting report: With three pitches that grade as above-average or better, there’s good reason the Braves are excited about Teheran. With a clean delivery, he delivers fastballs in the mid-90s, and though he still looks like he could add some strength, durability and maintaining velocity have not been issues. To complement his fastball, Teheran also throws a curve and changeup, both above-average to plus, and he commands all three of his pitches well. The Braves were willing to push Teheran aggressively, then call him up at such a young age last year because of his outstanding poise on the mound. He’s not one to be fazed by taking his lumps at the highest level.
Upside potential: Pitching at or near the top of a Major League rotation soon and for a long time to come.
Other 4 after the jump...
Braves have approximately 4 million to spend according to Braves Chairman, Terry McGuirk
This has been talked about 'til we're all blue in the face, but we finally have some set numbers. Terry says that the Braves are currently sitting at 90 million and will get to 94 million either during season or before season. Some encouraging news that there is some money.
However, there's news in this article not so encouraging:
1. The Braves are locked in to a local TV contract for the next 25 FRICKIN' YEARS. No chance of increasing payroll with higher telecast fee rates. BOOO!
2. Liberty Media has shown no interest in selling the Braves.
It sounds like the Braves are here to stay in the mid-market. A small bit of good news and two whoppers of bad news. Sorry to be the bearer.

Where's the payroll increase, Frank?
As a fan, I know I probably shouldn't feel jipped by the Braves inability to add more payroll considering that Liberty Media is the one that has them by the testicles, however in November, Frank told the media that the Braves will increase payroll, and thus far, they haven't.
In fact, even if every single incentive, buyout, or bonus is factored into the equation, the Braves are still only at 90.5 million (maximum), which is a decrease of 2-3 million, depending on the amount of money the Pirates sent with Diaz (which was reported as "insignificant" by Braves' reporters).
Letting Cody Ross go to the Sox (which would have filled every need that we were looking for: RH hitter, backup to all OF position, cheap) for 3 million + incentives tells me that the payroll increase that was advertised in November is no longer on the table.
I'm glad the Braves have decided to keep Prado. I'm upset that the Braves haven't found a trading partner for Jurrjens, but happy that they didn't trade him for a bag of balls. However, I'm hacked off that the advertisement to increase payroll has, thus far, been false. If Cody Ross signing for 3 million doesn't solidify that the Braves have no money, then I don't know what else will.
Go Braves. You suck, Liberty Media!
Quick Payroll Update
Ladies and Gentlemen, your Atlanta Braves!
Chipper: 14 million
Uggla: 13.2 million
McCann: 11.667 million
Hudson: 9 million
Diaz: 2.125 million
Ross: 1.625 million
Hinske: 1.5 million
Wilson: 1 million
Prado: 4.75 million
Jurrjens: 5.5
O’Flaherty: 2.5
Bourn: 6.85
*Lowe: 10 million
Total: 83.717 million for 12 guys
Signing 13 more at an average of 500k (thx, Bronn for reminding me about the Major League minimum increase) brings the total to approx. 90.5 million.
There should still be some money available. If there really is a payroll increase from last year's 94 million (after trades and partial salaries to both Diaz and Bourn), then there should be at least 4 million to spend. I expect the Braves to try and low-ball an offer to Cody Ross to finish the offseason. We still have no backup CF.
Braves have interest in Maicer Izturis...or so he says.
His name is gaining credibility. His tweets are ahead of everyone else's and seem legit. DOB now tweeting about Izturis. Truth? Who the hell knows!
Sketchy Source says Braves and O's working on a deal
I don't know if he's just a good guesser or what, but this guy broke news of a few big signings well before anyone else. Could be nothing, but I figured as dead as things have been on the trade front, any news might be worth hearing.
Everybody likes a 3 way!
I'd do this deal.
Serious matchup with the Angels...
In light of the Pujols' signing, the already overcrowed OF of the Angels got even more crowded. They now have 7 worthy candidates to fill 4 spots (3 OF and 1 DH): Bourjous, Wells, Torii, Trout, Abreu, Trumbo, and Morales
They also have 2 SS in Izturis and Aybar.
They probably retracted their offer to Wilson after signing Pujols, therefore putting them in need of a SP. It just so happens we have a plethora of starting pitchers and are in need of an OF and SS. This seems too easy!
Edit: Scratch last paragraph. What in the hell is going on in baseball this offseason?
Braves sign Constanza's clone

WHAT FREAKING KIND OF BASEBALL NIGHTMARE WORLD IS THIS?
Picking the Brains of the Red Sox faithful (from a Braves' faithful)
OK, can we all pretend that September 2011 did not happen and that we're still extremely satisfied with the core of our teams? Now to business...
We seem to match up in needs for both teams. You guys need a SP. We need a SS and backup OF. What do you guys think are fair deals? My Braves' tinted glasses was pondering this trade scenario which is, self-admittedly, probably a bit homerish: Reddick and Lowrie for Jurrjens.
What in the Red Sox fan's eye, would be a fair trade scenario to meet both teams need? Thanks!
Photoshop Opportunity: Joe Terd
Replace David Spade's face with Joe Terd's and the mop with a bat and you've got yourself a masterpiece. Anyone talented enough to give it a go?
Torii Hunter and his limited no-trade clause....
So, I was rosterbating and came across Torii Hunter as a bad contract swap candidate with Derek Lowe. However, I see Torii has a limited no-trade clause but the Braves aren't listed as of his "undesirables". Is it as simple as that? Or, is there more at work with these limited no trade clause contracts? Any info would be appreciated.
How to keep up with Braves' Winter League Players...
Go to the Braves' main site, click "Stats" and find "Winter Leagues".
Joe Terd is raking thus far, but our pitchers are getting roped.
Bad Contracts...
Many are pondering the ever popular Rosterbation scheme of swapping our crap for someone's else's crap. We've seen it with McLouth and Kawakami basically every offseason they were Braves. We've seen it with Derek Lowe after '09 (not in '10's offseason because he pitched above his head for a frickin' month making almost all believe he's back to form). Well, this offseason, we once again are fantasizing Derek Lowe's departure by taking on a bad contract. Here is an extensive list of all players deemed under poor contracts (which, in their minds, are actually quite good contracts).
*Some on the list might not be considered poor contracts per se' , but are players coming off a horribly bad year and are owed lots of money. Some numbers might be a bit off so feel free to comment in the thread if so.

Martin Prado's down year = Just doing what he's told
My favorite player on the team is still Martin Prado. At the first of the year, Chipper said that he knew Martin wouldn’t have trouble being a capable, even good left fielder, but he thought that Martin might have a mental adjustment to make. From my understanding, Martin has a lot of energy and at 2b, was involved in almost every defensive play (somehow). Anyone think that this mental adjustment might have made it’s way over to the plate?
I have a different theory…
Martin is a perfectionist, but more than this, he is a "team player" aka "coach pleaser". He has taken the role of a #2 hitter and has simply put “productive outs” as his main goal instead of actual production (as I’m sure this was the advice given to him in the #2 spot). His HR and BB rates are about the same, but his singles and doubles are down about 25%. More striking is his strikeout rate. Martin has always been a hard guy to K but this year he’s only striking out 9% of his plate appearances compared to 13% last year.
His numbers in the 2-hole this year match the theory:
261 plate appearances .243 BA and only 4HR, but, get this…only 12 strikeouts (striking out only 4 1/2% of the time)
Compared to his leadoff numbers:
245 plate appearances .283 batting average 7HR and 28 strikeouts(11 1/2%)
His walk rates in both spots are about the same, but Martin Prado has done exactly what he was told to do in the #2 spot: put the ball in play (231 times out of 243 chances {95.5%})
I ask you this…Which Prado do you want in your lineup?
Braves purchased contract of OF Antoan Richardson from AA Mississippi. He's a speed guy and a Vandy graduate

The Story of Evan Gattis...
So, who is Evan Gattis? He turns 25 in 3 days even though this is only his 2nd year in pro ball, is the catcher for Rome, just hit his 21st home run, and has a .975 OPS (a whopping 1.381 OPS against LHP). If you are as confused as I am, check this read out. It's an old article so it might have been posted here before, but people have been asking about him so I figured I'd try to help.
Billy Bullock
His splits are incredibly odd this year. He's lights out against lefties, much better on the road, and seems to like pitching during the day. So, a few questions...
1. Any weird/quirky things concerning Mississippi's park that he would have a hard time adjusting to at night?
2. Are his splits against lefties this year a fluke?
3. Anyone have a decent scouting report on this guy, personal or professional?
Thx
What's the scoop on Chris Garcia?
So, the guy destroys Rookie ball TWICE (I don't get it) then goes Indy for a few years, and now he's playing Low A ball in Rome, where again he's destroying the baseball. Since he's playing first, I'm going to assume he's not known for his glove, but does anyone know the reason why he was never promoted out of Rookie ball even though he put up stellar numbers?
Mather's Swing...
In the postgame interview, Mather told DOB that he worked on shortening his swing. Just watching his ABs last night, it seemed as though his swings were much more compact. Previously, there was a hitch before he started his swing which obviously made it difficult to catch up with a Major League fastball. Hopefully, his hot start is legit and the shorter, more compact swing is here to say. Here are the links...

Proctor to rejoin Braves on Sunday...
Until I read the article, announcing on Thursday that he'll rejoin the Braves on Sunday seemed like writing on the wall for Linebrink, and that the Braves were going to give him a few days to see if any other clubs had interest in him. After reading the article, I think the Braves are going to option Gearrin back to the Minors and showcase Proctor for awhile. I'm ok with that, but not at the expense of Gearrin. Only time will tell...
Rosterbation Thread: Prospect Swap Edition
The other rosterbation thread is dead as a doornail and a recent Fanpost has TC'ers rosterbating over Jesus Montero. We all know the story with our SP logjam. Currently, we have 5 SP at the Major League Level pitching lights out, 3 at AAA pitching lights out, and Randall Delgado pitching very well at AA. Oberholtzer and Hoover are also pitching well, and we have another SP candidate available come August (Medlen). There is obviously a surplus of SP talent that will need to be addressed soon. So, my question is, what Top Prospect, or SP, of ours would you swap for another organization's Top Prospect? Here is a link to 2011's Top Prospects.

Scouring the Cellar Dwellers for Meaningful Rosterbation...
It's quite apparent that the Braves are in need of a RH power bat off the bench. It also seems apparent that there's a big, gaping hole (being filled by the one-dimensional Brandon Hicks) where Omar Infante's flexibility off the bench used to be. Even though our RH 'pen options have looked shaky of late, I still think it's too early to even think about looking for bullpen help when we have this at Gwinnett:
Stephen Marek: 8.1 IP 5h 0bb 13k 0.60whip 0.00era
Juan Abreu: 8.1 IP 6h 4bb 6k 1.20whip 0.00 era
There are other promising numbers for Gwinnett's 'pen including the Assman's (Proctor) 12Ks in 8.0 IP accompanied with a 2.25 era, but his track record over the past few years should trump any early success he's having in AAA. So, back to the need at hand...that RH power bat.
Here are some RH power bats playing on teams that probably will be selling by All-Star break or getting rid of surplus.

Fangraphs rips Fredi a new one...
Apparently, Talking Choppers weren't the only ones that didn't like Fredi's decision to not walk Kemp. The article also goes on to point out that neither DOB or Mark Bowman questioned the decision.
Chipper, once again, talks about the 1st inning woes.
Via DOB:On falling behind early
"Yeah, we just got blitzed again, first and second inning. You saw the intensity in the at-bats in the first couple of innings, and then we fell behind 5-1 or 6-1, and there’s no telling from then on how many at-bats were wasted.
"I thought we squared up a lot more balls than the line score indicates. But the bottom line is, we’ve got to get through the first couple of innings still in the game."
On Lowe
"I don’t know if [he was affected] by three days’ rest or whatever, but he just seemed to be struggling with command. With the exception of a couple of balls that Ethier hit, he wasn’t hit hard. I don’t remember another ball on the barrel to be honest with you, other than Ethier’s. That’s baseball. You’ve just got to keep going out there and maybe we’ll get those breaks tomorrow."
As a captain of this team, he seems to be doing some finger-pointing, then doing some retreating. No matter the result last night, ultimately the pitching hasn't been the problem and it seems like Chipper is focussing on the wrong issues. Frustration reads differently from viewer to viewer. How do you guys see Chipper's comments?

April Showers bring Rosterbatory Flowers.
Things to rosterbate to:
1. We still need a RH bench bat.
2. Sherrill and Linebrink are looking no better than they did in Spring. Linebrink's replacement could easily come from within. On Sherrill's replacement, there's not much organizational depth in LH relief.
3. Kenshin Kawakami is still a Brave and there are teams (Orioles) who are still looking for SP depth. How 'bout a bad contract/change of scenery trade that both teams could benefit from?
Kenshin Kawakami and George Sherrill for Jake Fox and Mike Gonzalez?
Get it done, Wren!

Canizares released...
Really stinks for him. He can really rake. He deserves a bench spot somewhere. Good luck, Barbaro!
