Are Matt Carle's Turnovers That Costly?

The narrative goes that Matt Carle turns the puck over a lot. A simple scan of the stats show that Carle ranked 25th in the league this regular season in giveaways, with 55. This ranks behind many quality defensemen, including Subban (88 giveaways), Yandle (75), Chara (68), Wideman (68), Doughty (65), Girardi (61), and even Luke Schenn (58).

While this might stop some Carle 'haters' in their tracks, the more incessant will say that it is when the turnovers happen and how costly that they are. For that, lets look a little deeper.

I went through the game logs and looked at all 55 of Carle's giveaways and saw if they directly led to goals. It turns out that only 5 of them did. I don't know if this is a high or low ratio, but regardless only 9% of Carle's turnovers lead to goals.

Out of these 5, how many of them led to game winning goals for the other team? Just one, in the March 26th game against Tampa Bay, when Carle's turnover led to the goal that gave the Lightning a 4-2 lead, eventually leading to them winning 5-3. All five of the games where a Carle turnover led to a goal did lead to a loss. One of which was the 9-8 anomaly vs. Winnipeg in October, and another one was a shootout loss to New Jersey in November.

I wasn't sure the best way to share the data (first time doing anything like this) so I put it on a google doc for anyone who wants to look at it and hopefully some of the smarter members can make conclusions. Maybe this can help put the Carle turns the puck over thing to rest.

In case anyone was wondering, I saw Derek Mathers play this weekend with the phantoms. He got barely any playing time, was extremely slow and didn't really do anything. I think he might have had one noticeable hit. He seemed to have a hard shot, then again he hit the goalie in the chest both times. He is a big kid and I guess if something happened he would be a good person to protect his teammates, but I was really unimpressed.

Brayden Schenn Rules

So, as if anyone needed to hear it, Brayden Schenn rules. He dominated the game tonight with the Phantoms. Two assists, some crucial faceoff wins, played both the PK and the PP. He really looked phenomenal out there, as you'd expect. The thing that stood out to me the most was his vision. I said this about Matt Read, he just knows where people will be and where to put the puck.

Also, my girlfriend pointed out his ability to steal the puck from people with ease. He's pretty good at that too.

I'm a Flyer fan from upstate New York and I'll be taking a trip up to Montreal in about mid August or so for a few days. I was just wondering if there is anything hockey related tourist attractions I could go to, or anything Canadiens related. Comment on Rinaldo/Sestito

Sestito is more worth it to the Flyers next year, but Rinaldo was not a liability in the little amount of ice time he had.

Had to get that mini rant off my chest, let's go Flyers (and Phantoms!)

Can we stop talking about Rinaldo and Sestito in the light? Rinaldo is 5'11/180 lbs, Sestito is 6'5/228. Rinaldo is a high energy body smasher, Sestito is an enforcer with a net front presence and decent enough speed/hands that he could be considered a power forward. They have different roles, it's like comparing Carcillo and Shelley (except I'd say that Rinaldo/Sestito are both more valuable). Matt Read has done nothing but impress me since he's arrived. In 6 professional games, he has racked up 4 goals and 1 assist and has looked phenomenal! He was getting PP time since his first game, and they've got him up on a scoring line with Hamel. He looks nothing like a guy just out of college. I don't know if I'm easily impressed, but if anybody makes the Flyers out of training camp next year, it's this guy. Harry Zolniercyzk is awesome too, finishes every check, plays with a lot of energy, etc, but Matt Read is the real deal.

Just got home from the game. The Phantoms lost 2-1 in a pretty decent game. Pither had the only goal on a breakaway, an absolute bullet that he put past Enroth. Speed kills as they say, and he was screaming down the wing and he even had a chance to tie the game up with about 10 seconds left on another break away but hit the post. Leighton looked pretty good to be honest. The rebounds were not egregious, and the first goal was a result of a bad clear by Hamel on the PK, and the second goal was on an odd man rush that Leighton really didn't have a chance on. He made some pretty good saves though, was able to go side to side and covered the post. He made a particularly memorable sprawling save to rob a certain goal. He looked like the consummate veteran, and the Glens Falls faithful really loved it. He made 28 saves on 30 shots in the loss.

Rinaldo dropped the gloves right off the opening faceoff. I'd say he lost though, and he wasn't too much of a factor otherwise. It's amazing how great Pither looks with some legit wingers, this time he centered Hamel and Testwuide. Walker was a mostly invisble -1. Syvret played awesome - what else is new? Gustafsson was a +1.

Rowe, Legein, Ryan, Lehtivouri, Kalinski and JP Testwuide were the scratches. The only healthy scratch was Lehtivouri, and I am unsure about Michael Ryan.

Danny Syvret Goal Watch

The Offensive Dynamo netted two goals in tonight's futile 6-3 loss against the Norfolk Admirals. At this point, it's safe to assume he will soon be our leading goal scorer, so I think we should start up a goal count. Three in two games for my boy Danny Syvret, who logged a hefty amount of minutes and looked more responsible than anyone else out there on the ice. Also Luke Pither scored his second in as many games.

Danny Syvret scored a laser from the blue line on the Powerplay late in the third period to bring the Phantoms within one last night. They ended up losing 3-2, but Syvret looked like the consummate veteran, wearing the A and getting a lot of minutes. Michael Ryan also looked really good on a line with Hamel and Bordson, winning a fight and making his presence known. Luke Pither scored his first goal with on a breakaway after a nice pass from the defensive zone by Marc-Andre Bourdon. We still have lost 15 of the last 16, but the team is still looking better.

Finally they call up Riopel. Backlund just hasn't been playing like himself, and I don't think starting 3 games in a row last weekend helped. I hope Rio does well, I just don't trust Stewart in net even though he played well when he came in for relief vs. Abbotsford.

Apparently Pat Maroon is gone. Not too many reasons on why it happened but he was our ONLY good offensive player, leading the team in scoring. It doesn't make any sense at all why this happened but the natives up here in Glens Falls are definitely restless!

Quick update from the Phantoms game

I just home from the first preseason game and I just wanted to throw some stuff out there. Brian Stewart played the whole 60 minutes and looked pretty good (27 saves), not allowing a goal until the third period (on the penalty kill, nonetheless). I was surprised to not see Riopel, but Stewart looked very good. Makes the goalie situation even more interesting as he definitely proved he deserves a spot with the Phantoms. Also of note was that the line of Klotz-Rinaldo-Clackson was a lot of fun to watch. Rinaldo was already going at it with players during warm up..words were exchanged and that line was involved in a lot of the extra-curricular activities of the night. That being said Rinaldo took more than one stupid penalty, and his discipline leaves something to be desired. The Phantoms ended up losing 2-1 in OT.

Looking for an eastern conference champions shirt

Does anybody know of a place where you can still get an Eastern Conference Champions shirt with the roster on the back? I know this is probably a stupid question but I've been looking all over to get one, and the fact I live in New York doesn't help. I had this superstition that If i bought the shirt before the Finals were over than we would never win..but I guess it didn't help :P.
