Bumped. Thanks again to Rye for keeping us plugged into the whole world of UCLA athletics. GO BRUINS. -N

Women's Soccer

The #3 Bruins polished off non-conference play this weekend with a pair of home wins. First came a 1-0 win over Pepperdine where Lauren Cheney found net in the 5th minute and the Bruins held on to win. Then came a 3-0 thrashing of 19th ranked San Diego that moved the Bruins to 9-0-2 on the season, extended their nation's best home win streak to 42 and extended their shutout streak to 10 games. With non-conference play done UCLA will begin their conference schedule this week when they host the Washington schools on Friday and Sunday.

Men's Soccer

The men's team also played two games this weekend and extended their unbeaten streak to four. Their only problem is not one of those four has been a win. UCLA came away with two draws this week, a 2-2 draw versus #22 UCSB and a 3-3 draw versus San Diego St. in their conference opener. The Bruins (2-3-5, 0-0-1) will have to pick up their play this week if they want results versus #10 Cal and a tough Stanford squad.

Women's Volleyball

The #8 women's volleyball team went north this weekend to play the Oregon schools and came away with a respectable, but somewhat disappointing split. On Thursday the Bruins dropped a tough four set match to #11 Oregon, but they were able to bounce back and pick up a tough five set win over Oregon St. on Saturday. The schedule does not ease up for the Bruins (11-3, 1-2) as they continue play in the always tough Pac 10 with home matches versus #10 Washington and Washington St. this weekend.

Men's Water Polo

Another Bruin team kicked off conference play this week as the #2 men's water polo took on #7 Long Beach St. in their MPSF opener. The Bruins took an early lead and never gave it up on Saturday as they disposed of the 49ers 10-4 at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. Eight different Bruins scored, Scott Davidson picked up a hat trick and Chay Lapin made 15 saves in a total team effort as the Bruins improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Bruins host their first match of the year at the Sunset Rec. Center this Thursday when #6 Loyola Marymount visits, then they will take place in the SoCal Invitational, hosted by Pepperdine. The Bruins will play Bucknell in the first round and the winner of the #7 Long Beach St.-#10 UC San Diego match in the 2nd round. 16 teams are in the tournament's field, including the nation's top 11 teams.

Cross Country

The men's team took place in the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Oregon this weekend and came away with a respectable fourth place finish. Drew Shackleton led the Bruins with a 17th place finish as the Bruins raced without one of their top runners, Alex Crabill. Neither the men nor the women will run again in competition until the Pre-NCAA Invitational on the 18th.

Men's Golf

The nation's top team heads back onto the course today as they begin the Cal Poly Intercollegiate at Monarch Dunes Golf Club.

Women's Rowing

The women's rowing season begins this weekend with the Marina Challenge in Marina Del Rey.

Calendar (all times pacific)
Monday, October 6
Men's Golf, Cal Poly Intercollegiate, All-Day- Nipomo, CA
Tuesday, October 7
Men's Golf, Cal Poly Intercollegiate, All-Day- Nipomo, CA
Thursday, October 9
Men's Water Polo vs. Loyola Marymount, 4:00 pm- Sunset Rec.

Women's Soccer

The #2 Bruins had only one game this week, a nationally televised tilt at Santa Clara. The two teams played a full 90 minutes, but neither could muster a goal and the teams finished in a scoreless draw. The Bruins dominated the first 15 minutes, but couldn't push one across and the two teams were pretty even the rest of the way. UCLA (8-0-1) has now posted eight consecutive shutouts and wiill take that streak into two home matches this weekend against #21 San Diego and Pepperdine.

Men's Soccer

It was a week of ties in the UCLA soccer world as the men's team had two of their own. On Thursday the Bruins traveled to San Diego and came away with a 1-1 draw and on Sunday the Bruins came back from a goal down twice to notch a 2-2 draw with Cal St. Northridge. The Bruins (2-3-3) will host two matches this week, a Wednesday visit from UCSB and a Sunday visit from San Diego St. that will kick off Pac 10 play.

Women's Volleyball

The #4 Bruins had only one match this week, but it was a big one as they played at #5 USC in their first conference match of the year. The Bruins won a tough first set 26-24, but dropped the second 25-14. The Bruins moved to within one set of the win with a 25-20 third set victory, but the Trojans won the last two sets 25-14 and 15-5 to win the match. The loss ended the Bruins nine match win streak and dropped the Bruins to 10-2 and 0-1 in conference play. UCLA continues Pac 10 play this weekend when they head to Oregon to take on the Ducks and Beavers.

Men's Water Polo

The Bruins had the week off, but they move up the rankings to #2 in the nation. UCLA will jump back into the pool this Saturday when they host #5 Long Beach St. at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. The game is at 4 pm PST so if you're heading out for the football game, get there early and check out the water polo match.

Women's Golf

UCLA came into this weekend's Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tennessee ranked #2 in the country, but they may be poised to take the top spot after a dominating tournament victory. The Bruins shot -14 on the tournament, six shots better than runner up and top tanked USC, while junior Sydnee Michaels won the individual title and four other Bruins finished in the top 20. UCLA will take a couple weeks off before the Stanford Intercollegiate on October 17.

Cross Country

The women's team headed up north to the Stanford Invitational and finished fifth out off 33 teams. Freshman Katja Goldring was the Bruins' top runner for the third race. The men didn't send enough runners to qualify for the team competition, but did send four runners, the best of which finished 71st. The men will compete in the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Eugene, Oregon next weekend and the will take the weekend off.

Women's Tennis

The four singles players and three doubles teams continue with their competition in the ITA All-American Championships throughout the week,

Calendar (all times pacific)
Tuesday, September 30
Women's Tennis, ITA All-American Championships, All Day- Malibu, CA
Wednesday, October 1
Men's Soccer vs. UCSB, 7 pm- Drake Stadium
Thursday, October 2
Women's Tennis, ITA All-American Championships, All Day- Malibu, CA
Friday, October 3
Women's Soccer vs. Pepperdine, 7 pm- Drake Stadium
Women's Volleyball at Oregon, 7 pm- Eugene, OR
Saturday, October 4
Men's Water Polo vs. Long Beach St., 4 pm- Rose Bowl Aquatic Center
Women's Volleyball at Oregon St., 7 pm- Corvallis, OR
Men's Cross Country, Dellinger Invitational, All-Day- Eugene, OR
Women's Tennis, ITA All-American Championships, All Day- Malibu, CA
Sunday, October 5
Women's Soccer vs. San Diego, 12 pm- Drake Stadium
Men's Soccer vs. San Diego St., 2:30 pm- Drake Stadium
Women's Tennis, ITA All-American Championships, All Day- Malibu, CA

UCLA baseball head coach John Savage welcomed seven newcomers to campus Thursday as fall quarter classes began in Westwood. Savage's fourth full recruiting class at UCLA features eight talented players, including one freshman pitcher slated to enroll at UCLA in January 2009.

"We believe this is a class of players that can make an immediate impact in our program," said Savage, who enters his fifth season as UCLA's head coach. "This group is very talented, one that should be as good as any incoming class in the country."

Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N

Women's Soccer

The draw versus Brown last week caused the Bruins to drop a spot in the rankings as they currently find themselves at #2 behind Notre Dame. This week the Bruins hosted the UCLA Women's Cup where they played Miami (FL) and New Mexico. Miami was the first team on the slate and the Bruins easily disposed of the Hurricanes 3-0 as Christina DiMartino found the back of the net twice for UCLA. Against New Mexico the Bruins picked up another 3-0 victory, but the big news on the was the record UCLA set. UCLA set a school record with their seventh consecutive shutout as they extended their shutout streak to 688 minutes. The Bruins have no allowed a goal since their first game of the season and have outscored their opponents 20-0 in that span. Next up for the Bruins (7-0-1) is a trip to Santa Clara on Thursday, a game that will be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel.

Men's Soccer

Taking a page out of the women's book, the men's soccer team picked up a shutout in their only match of the week. A 2-0 home win over Santa Clara was UCLA's second win of the season as they improved their record to 2-3-1 on the year. The Bruins will play two matches this week, first a Thursday match at San Diego then a home match on Sunday versus Cal St. Northridge.

Women's Volleyball

The busy #4 Bruins had four matches on the schedule for last week, but they showed no sign of fatigue all week as they notched four wins. On Tuesday the Bruins went to Northridge for a match versus the Matadors and came away with a straight set victory. Next, the Bruins went to Evanston, Illinois for the Wildcat Classic where they swept through the tournament, beating Virginia, Georgetown and Northwestern. The Bruins lost only one set the entire tournament as they improved their record to 10-1, but the highlight of the weekend was the accomplishment of Nellie Spicer who reached the 5,000 career assist mark against Georgetown. Spicer moved to #3 on the UCLA career assist list and was able to do so in her home state of Illinois with her family and friends in attendance. This week the Bruins start Pac 10 play with a match at #5 USC. The Bruins and Trojans split their two games last season with each team winning at home. This would be a good match for Bruins fans all over LA to head over to and support the team at the Galen Center.

Men's Water Polo

Each year the NorCal Tournament brings out the nation's best collegiate water polo teams and this year was no exception as the nation's top 11 teams participated in the 16 team tournament, including the #4 Bruins. UCLA began the tournament with a 11-6 victory over #14 Pacific in the first round. The Bruins beat #5 Pepperdine 8-3 in the second round and upset top ranked Cal in the semi-finals 6-4. The Bruins came up one goal short in the title game, falling 6-5 to #2 USC and while a loss to the Trojans is a bitter pill to swallow the tournament proved the Bruins are indeed a national title contender. The Bruins are off until October 4th when they host #8 Long Beach St. at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center prior to the football team's game versus Washington St.

Men's Golf

The #1 Bruins went to the Midwest for the Olympia Fields/University of Illinois Invitational, where they finished 12th. The Bruins put together solid rounds all weekend, but each day one player would put up a big number and drag the team score down. Lucas Lee and Eric Flores were UCLA's top men on the weekend, finishing 16th and 17th in the individual competition. The Bruins will be off until the Cal Poly Intercollegiate on October 6th.

Women's Golf

The #2 Bruins had last week off, but get back to action this Friday at the Mason Rudolph Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee.

Cross Country

Both the men's and women's teams were in Honolulu this weekend for the Big Wave Classic and while the setting would put anyone into a good mood, the teams' moods must have been considerably better considering both captured titles. The men dominated the meet as Bruin runners took spots 1-9, led by Laef Barnes, who took the individual title. It was the men's second title in as many meets. On the women's side, the Bruins weren't quite as dominant as the men, but the win will do just fine. Bruin women took five of the top 10 spots in the meet, led by freshman Katja Goldring who won the individual title and was UCLA"s top runner for the second consecutive meet. Both teams will jump back into action this weekend when they head to Palo Alto for the Stanford Invitation on Saturday.

Women's Tennis

The defending national champion Bruins don't start their season until the spring, but individual competitions take place all fall and winter long, beginning with the ITA All-American Championships this weekend. Four Bruins singles players were invited and three doubles teams got the nod as well. Action on the women's side begins on Saturday, while the men begin on October 2nd.
