Bloody Elbow Let's Clarify "Back of the Head"

Abc-backofhead_medium

From mmajunkie.com

"Strikes are not permissible in the nape of the neck area up until the top of the ears. Above the ears, permissible strikes do not include the Mohawk area from the top of the ears up until the crown of the head. The crown of the head is found where the head begins to curve.

In other words, strikes behind the crown of the head and above the ears are not permissible within the Mohawk area. Strikes below the top of the ear are not permissible within the nape of the neck area."

Bloody Elbow Armchair Psychology: Why Nick Diaz "Won't play the game"

Nick-diaz-smile_medium

via cdn0.sbnation.com

Nick Diaz showed more bizarre behavior over the weekend, missing flights to Toronto and miscommunicating with his new (old) bosses. Cost him a title shot and some serious money. A lot of people have gotten down on Nick and made moral judgements against him. The thing is, Nick's nuts. Now, I am not a psychologist or a psychiatrist. But I do have experience working in psychiatric hospitals, enough to have a feel for most common diagnosis which present themselves. In my opinion, Diaz clearly exhibits symptoms of paranoid personality disorder.

Bloody Elbow Offensive wrestling: the problem with GSP

In his summary of last night's bouts, Mike Fagan wrote,

I thought GSP should have abandoned offensive wrestling after Koscheck stuffed two takedowns in the first round. He didn't entirely, but the standup was the biggest skill disparity in the fight.

Although Mike is certainly right that GSP should have tried something different regarding his wrestling, he is very wrong here. Instead of giving up on the TD, GSP should have thrown bombs, not tried to maintain top control while Kos was scrambling. Staying on top in MMA requires good wrestling, but it also requires your opponent to fear your GnP and pull guard (or curl up on one's side if one is the "baddest man on the planet"). Kos knew that GSP's top game had become static and predictable, and that he had nothing to fear in trying to immediately scramble up, leaving himself wide open while doing so.
