McCovey Chronicles Chris Denorfia - That looks shopped

So Natto said we should have a set of  these. I don't know if you guys remember but Lookout Landing had a thread where they photoshopped Nyjer Morgan and it was probably my favorite post from them.

Here is the link to that post. Beware it can screw up your computer so give it time. Anyways so here are my contributions and post your contributions in the comments sections. Please include subject lines with your pictur

Here is the original picture as well as a picture of just him with a white background for those who want to move him anywhere else:

I personally liked these documentaries and am pretty excited to watch The Tenth Inning. Also Barry Bonds is supposed to be a central figure and from what I hear it might actually be very unbiased etc.

At the bottom is the link to the podcast interview with Ken Burns

McCovey Chronicles San Jose Giants @ Rancho Cucamonga Quakes - 9/19/10

So I was at the Quakes Giants game last night and it was a very interesting experience. Here are a few observations:

-There were some pretty hard hit balls at times. Peguero, Perez, and Simmons had some pretty hard hit balls late in the game. They were hit just shy of home runs, all three hits going to the warning track.

-Also Peguero was in RF and Perez was in CF and man they both have pretty awesome throwing arms. Perez really surprised me.

-Adrianza was kind of sloppy defensively. He mad a good catch early in the game but bobbled a ball that allowed a runner to 3rd and a runner to 1st and also threw the ball away at home to try to prevent a run which allowed the run to score. He had a very good AB though where he drew a walk after fouling off a lot of pitches.

-Perez was absolutely atrocious on the base paths though. He originally made in base via error and was promptly picked off and then was caught stealing later on, completely messing up any kind of rally the Giants had.

-Culberson was solid defensively and offensively (and he has an insane curly mullet) and man Adrianza looks so young he has such a babyface.

So here are some pictures I took that I felt were good enough to upload here (sorry I don't have a good telephoto lense and was sitting behind the net so you can see that).

Pretty interesting article about Willie Mays and the negro league owner turned scout who helped bring the Giants Marichal, Cepeda and the Alou Brothers.:

Sixty years ago Monday 19-year-old Willie Mays of the Birmingham Barons was signed by the New York Giants. The circumstances that led to the Giants discovering the future Hall-of-Famer provide a previously untold glimpse into the wild-west mentality that prevailed among scouts and major league teams combing the already declining Negro League for talent.

Angry Bumgarner is angry. I know there's a picture already but here is the actual video of the ejection. And close to the end you see a white thing zoom past at the right edge of the screen, that is, of course, Bumgarner throwing the ball into centerfield. I kind of think the ump said something because Bumgarner was walking away before he went back to argue.

McCovey Chronicles OT: Where did you grow up?

Well I was on the whole, where are you located at thread, and I noticed that one of the commenters had said that they wanted a follow up about where people are from, and I'm curious too.

As some of you may know, I am not from the San Francisco area. I'm actually located in Southern California, Montebello CA to be exact. It's about 10 or so miles from the center of Los Angeles and is a pretty quiet city. My family has lived in SoCal since they immigrated here back in 1940. I've been to San Francisco a few times and have gone to the ballpark and everytime I go and make a new friend, they ask how it was possible that I became a Giants fan when I live in SoCal. Well it's story time. When my dad was younger he liked the Dodgers, much like the rest of the kids in his area. But my dad also liked individual players from other teams, his favorite of all time being Roberto Clemente. My dad had always liked players from Latin America because we were Mexican as well. He eventually started liking the Giants because of players like Orlando Cepeda, the Alou brothers, Tito Fuentes and Juan Marichal. From then on my dad continued to follow the Giants and as far back as I can remember, I  would watch the Giants games with my dad whenever they were on TV. He would take me to Dodger Stadium to watch the Giants whenever they came to town, always sitting in Left Field to watch my favorite player Barry Bonds. From that moment, I was a Giants fan for life.

So that's my story, I'd like to hear more stories from the McCoven. Where did you grow up and how did you become a Giants fan?

Share.

A source in the Tampa Bay Rays organization says that outfielder Jermaine Dye is backing off his demand for a contract that promises he’ll get a starting job. The Rays are the only team making that promise, so Dye’s agent Bob Bry is reportedly looking elsewhere and might have contacted the San Francisco Giants.

I'm really hoping this is complete bullshit and he's just trying to get more money out of the Rays

yay for hope but mostly this:

"Bochy confirmed that C Buster Posey(notes) is a long shot to make the major league team out of spring training as Bengie Molina’s(notes) backup. 'He is probably going to be going to (Triple-A) Fresno and continue to work on his game. He’s at that point where he needs his three, four at-bats on a consistent basis,' Bochy said."

McCovey Chronicles OT: To You SF Natives

Ok McCoven I need your help. I live in Los Angeles and I'm going to take a trip up to San Francisco to go to Opening Night on April 10th.

Me and a friend are taking a road trip and are trying to find places to stay and things to do while we're spending our time there (we'll be staying 4 days 3 nights). I want to know some details about the city to get an idea about where to go.

I'm sure there are sketchy areas as there are in every city and I'd like to know what areas I should probably stay away from considering it will only be us two girls out there alone. Where are some places I should make sure to visit? So any help and suggestions would be awesome.

Again, the Giants are offering Lincecum $8 million.

Word is, though, that Lincecum would still be upset with the Giants even if it goes to arbitration and wins the $13 million, which would be a record-shattering number. The record for any player arb-el for the first time is held by Phillies’ Ryan Howard, who got $10 million before the 2008 season.

McCovey Chronicles Get Your Damn Act Together Cardinals

If you had told me a month ago that I'd be cheering on Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright, I would have probably punched you in the mouth...

However all of that aside I couldn't be more pissed about it. After giving myself a day to calm down by watching Matt Holliday catch the ball with his nads about twenty times, I've begun to pray to the baseball gods that the Dodgers lose. I was entertaining the thought of the Dodgers losing three games in a row and shoving it in those smug faces. And yet a part of me doesn't want to hope because I don't want to be disappointed (again) this season.

But let me say this: Cardinals...get your fucking act together now.

Pooholes hasn't been the great almost MVP we expect lately and its killing me. The baseball overlords had been kicking me while I was down, first bringing me up and hoping and believing that hey...maybe we do have a shot at this. And then they knocked me down with their elimination, kicked me in the mouth with keeping the Rockies in the playoffs and spit on me for good measure by letting the Dodgers take the NL West.

If the rest of the post season continues like this I just may have to kill myself. I want the assholes in New York to lose (that ain't looking good now) and even though it still stings to think about the Angels, I'd rather have them than Boston. The Phillies and Cardinals need to stop this shit right now and get their heads back in the game.

With all those men on base in the Cards game and no one to bring them in it was like I was watching the damn Gigantes (and yes it killed me every single time). The only way things could get worse is if New York and LA play in the world series. I think I would spontaneously combust.

So please....give me something, throw me a bone here.

This is my olive branch to you baseball gods, please accept it.

McCovey Chronicles Mr. Sabean, Mr. Bochy I have something I'd like to say

Even though Sabes and Boch say they don't have contracts, it's highly likely that they will be brought back for another year, and though I wish I could be wrong, my dreams of their release have for the most part been shattered.

I know there have been multiple posts about what we need to do for this offseason, but I've been hoping to put in my two cents about what we should do and though you're probably thinking, what can a 19 year old girl possibly have to say about this? Well as a SF Giants Superfan since the age of 6 I have their best interests at heart.

First of all like thousands of people before me have said, we need to get a big bat, preferably two (one to be a clean-up hitter, the other to work later in the rotation). The fact that we had pretty bad offense, finishing last OBP, 13th in runs scored, and 14th in slugging % really says something. The whole point is that too many times we've had people on base with the go ahead run on third with or the tying man on 1st or 2nd and we've blown it.

Second, I have some (modest) suggestions.

  1. Please, please, please get rid of Edgar Renteria. I know he was "injured" all season and that's why he hasn't been able to produce this year (or last year) but honestly. He will probably not get better. He's already in his mid thirties and is getting older and for the most part, we don't become more athletic and agile as we get older.
  2. Figure out what to do with Rowand, because he's killing me. Don't get me wrong, Rowand is a good fielder. He does well out there but the dude cannot bat for shit. Let me rephrase that, for the most part Rowand can bat when we're winning, but when we need that bat he swings at the two outside pitches and watches the one right in the strike zone.
  3. Randy Winn...right field...excellent batter? No...but my hopes that Winn will be gone by next season are realized, however his inability to bat should have earned him the bench (not like he was that great of a fielder either), possibly subbing him in at the end innings, but we can't change the past.
  4. Torres seems to be promising, if he can be consistent and repeat this end of season success that he had, start him out there.
  5. See where Ishikawa is at and place him out there accordingly. If his batting steps it up (which I kind of hope for) play him, if not find a 1st baseman...preferably one that can bat.
  6. Bengie Molina...good catcher but I'm sorry the guy has to go. He's getting older, is out of shape and sometimes I'm scared he won't make it to first on a single. The guy can't run, even though he has the 20 home runs, he's not a clean-up hitter and really doesn't play small ball well. Especially for a guy his size squatting so long is probably not good on his knees. I say let him get his free agency, let him go to another team (besides is he REALLY worth what he's going to want us to pay him? Let's be honest, the guy is going to want a lot of money) and let Whiteside and Posey catch. Posey is promising and the only way the kid is going to get better and get to major league level is by playing him.
  7. Tim Lincecum...arbitration...lock him up...NOW
  8. Get a great hitting coach. No not necessarily to teach them how to hit (though they could work on getting the ball in the other direction) but to teach them some plate discipline. Barry Bonds had some of the best plate discipline I think I've seen and it was insanely effective. The guys swing WAY too much at balls they shouldn't be swinging at. They swing at all the away and high balls and get lucky. If they had better plate discipline, the amount of walks we would get would be enormously better than this year. Pablo Sandoval led the team in walks and that guy swings at practically everything. Now Sabean says that we need a batter that can compliment the free swinging...no Sabes, we need to stop that bad habit of swinging at everything and get a batter who can teach these guys to be somewhat picky with pitches.
  9. Though it's not likely we could afford it, take a look at soon-to-be free agent Matt Holliday (who will probably stay with St. Louis if Pujols takes a little less money) and Jason Bay and see what we can do with them. I think Freddy Sanchez won't be too bad if he stays healthy (which is an issue).
  10. Give Madison Bumgarner a chance, see what the kid can do and work accordingly. Same reasoning as Posey, he's not going to get better if he doesn't get the chance to play and learn from his mistakes. Actually just start playing the younger guys. They aren't going to get better if they don't play consistently. Playing once a week or once every two weeks is not consistent enough to get these guys into playing shape.

Sadly I doubt that everything I dream will happen. But hopefully Sabean and Bochy will get some kind of clue and do what's best for the team and the franchise. I think they can do it! I mean it's not like Sabean has the reputation for picking and overpaying past their prime vets that are either injured or who fail at the plate or just crap in general...and it's not like Bochy will consistently play vets who prove to not do much for the flailing offense and only play the young guys in the last few games of the season....

Oh wait.

So what do you think? Am I totally off base here?
