Madison Bumgarner: 12th starter (at best)
MadBum has, to date, faced 980 batters, with a FIP of 3.12. Sounds impressive, but Dave Cameron pointed out that he plays at AT&T, which suppresses homers, making his FIP look better than it should be. Apparently, 3.15 just isn't that impressive.
Well, here's a list of all of the pitchers with a FIP of 3.27 or better in their first 980 BFs as a starter, out of all MLB pitchers who debuted in the last 60 years, together with the year and their age when they reached that point:
Does anybody know of somewhere you can download up to date pitch-by-pitch data for 2010 (in a manageable format)? There was a site that produced retrosheet event files on a daily basis, which was fantastic, but that appears to have stopped updating as of a few weeks ago. Is there anywhere else you can get this sort of thing?
Giants Baserunning
Further to Grant’s earlier post regarding why the Giants’ offence is terrible at producing runs, yet not terrible at producing decent OPS+ numbers, I thought I’d do a little bit of digging myself. His statement that the Giants are slow is certainly true, but they are also poor baserunners.
