Backing The Pack Chip Baker, Director of Baseball Operations, FSU

One thing I like with regard to attending the ACC baseball tournament is the opportunity to talk with fans of State and fans of the other schools playing in the tournament, and seeing John Edwards sit uncomfortably with his daughter in a seat just below where I was sitting.

During the UNC-Miami ACC baseball tournament game today I was chatting with a fan when a man who had been talking on his cell phone asked me if it would take about an hour to drive from Greensboro to Spencer, North Carolina. I, being from Spencer, told him that yes it would take about an hour after which I told him I was from Spencer. I also told him I attended North Rowan High School. Turns out I was talking to Chip Baker who is the Director of Baseball Operations for FSU and also a graduate of North Rowan High School. His father was Walt Baker, former coach of basketball and baseball at North Rowan.

If the North Rowan High School name is familiar at this time, this is the school where the teacher told her student that it was basically illegal to speak "ill" of President Obama.

Chip played baseball at High Point University after which he coached at Virginia Tech for Coach Hartman, Georgia Tech for Danny Hall and Florida State for Mike Martin. Chip, also applied for the head coaching job at State along with Elliot Avent.

After coaching third base for FSU, Chip moved into the Director of Baseball Operations job.

While talking with Chip, I asked him what he knew with regard to FSU leaving the ACC. He stated that he did not know anything in particular although he did recently tell the athletic director that he knew everything after watching the talking heads of ESPNU discuss the possibility.

I asked him how he felt about FSU leaving the ACC. He said that when the athletic director at the time that FSU was in the Metro conference asked him about moving to the ACC, he having just returned from a road trip to Mississippi State and with knowledge of the ACC due to growing up in Spencer, said that he just did not want to go back to Mississippi State anymore.

During the discussion, Chip mentioned the cost of travel to Big Twelve schools which he would have to deal with, and staying in the hotels and motels near these schools. While Chip has no real knowledge of what FSU will decide to do, upon me again asking him point blank whether he wanted to leave the conference, he answered with an emphatic "no".

Backing The Pack Day Two at the ACC Tournament

or is it day two at Stumble Stilt Skins? I am at Skins now using their wi-fi. The dive was full when i came, full of reporters awaiting the Edwards decision. The courthouse is one block from here on Market Street.

Not much of an improvement "pretty woman wise" at the tournament. Clemson has some attractive women fans. Not so much for UVA.

What is bad about the Clemson-UVA game is the "Uh-huh" dude. He is one person who gets on my nerves. At least he fell down trying to catch a foul ball making a fool of himself-not that he already does not.

On Trea Turner, his getting picked off at second in the second FSU game and yesterday really took the wind out of State's sails and stopped what could have been big scoring innings. I did not see the balk at FSU which some write occurred, but yesterday I had a good view and he was safe. Let's hope he gets back to stealing some bases. That really helps State.
