How Inconsistent is the Phillies' Offense?
Not very.
If by "inconsistent", we are talking about the fact that they started very slowly, but have done better lately, then Yes!
First 16 games: 2.7 runs per game (15th in the NL), and they were also 15th in scoring 3+ or 4+ runs
Last 30 games: 4.8 runs per game (3rd in the NL), 5th most games of 3+, 2nd most games of 4+
But it seems that most times when people call the offense inconsistent they mean that the Phillies score a lot some days, and struggle some others. Well, of course, every team does that to some extent. So does the Phillies' scoring fluctuate more than most other teams?

Phillies Farm Update
Additions to each team:
Lehigh Valley - Kennelly (3B), Susdorf (OF), Cloyd (RHP), Brummett (RHP), as well as Hudson (OF) from Tampa in the Rich Thompson trade.
Reading - Tripp (OF), Barnes (DH), Bonilla (RHP), Whatcott (RHP), Gailey (LHP).
Clearwater - Hill (C), Hillman (OF), Duffy (DH), Duke (RHP), Morgado (LHP).
Lakewood - Stumpo (C), Martinez (1B), Sasaki (LHP), Hollands (LHP), Campbell (RHP), Paulino (RHP) -- Luis Paulino seems to be a converted infielder.
As in the previous update, the table below includes each position player's OPS. However ERA for pitchers is now replaced by FIP. Stats are through Wednesday's games:

Phillies Waterfalls of Failure and Frustration
Taco pal had an excellent 45-game state of the Phillies in last night's recap thread.
This is a somewhat more quantitative take on what is different from what we might have expected.
There are two ways to do that comparison:
1) versus early 2011, when they were also missing Chase Utley and struggled to score runs
or
2) versus 2011 overall, knowing that any comparison to a 102-win team is going to be unfavorable, but at least hoping to identify the biggest factors.
This uses waterfall charts to show those comparisons, by starting with the 2011 result and layering on the 2012 differences in hitting and pitching. It's a purely results-oriented view, simply describing what happened.

Phillies Hitting with Runners in Scoring Position
The Phillies' offense has been up and down this season, with periods where they were 15th in scoring (first 16 games), then 2nd in scoring (next 25 games), and awful again (last 3). But overall, they've been about average:
3.95 runs per game (9th, Lg Avg 4.06)
.703 OPS (9th, Lg Avg .704)
wOBA .312 (7th, Lg Avg .309)
And in slightly more detail:
OBP: .316 (7th, Lg Avg .316)
SLG: .387 (8th, Lg Avg .388)
(breaking SLG down even further, their BA is 4th, and ISO is 13th)
But they've seemingly managed to climb to the middle of the pack despite an utter lack of ability to do anything with men on base, and in particular with runners in scoring position (and most frustrating, with men on 3rd and less than two out).
Given their essentially league-average offense, we should expect that they are also league-average in those particular situations. Let's see if they are.

Who would have thought before the season started that after 39 games, the Phillies would rank higher in scoring than in ERA?
Interestingly, FIP and xFIP are both ranked 2nd. The Phillies' ERA happens to be at the back end of a large group of teams clustered in a small range from #3 (PIT 3.34) to #10 (PHI 3.54). #11 is far back at 4.09.

No Love for J-Roll
Angelo Cataldi had an article in the free daily The Metro today. Link -- the main part of the article was on Brian Dawkins, but one of the other two pieces there is on Rollins. It's a short blurb, but it's very efficiently packed with insults, vitriol, and innuendo:
During his 19-game audition as a middle-of-the-order guy, he managed no home runs and three RBIs, with an embarrassing .216 average. In other words, for three weeks he was a No. 8 hitter batting five slots too high.

Phillies Stat Notes -- April 23rd, 2012
I will try to add more verbiage later, but for now two quick tables:
- Update of key stats of the Phillies to date vs. early 2011 (pre Utley's return)
- As they start a new series, a comparison of those same stats between the Phils and Diamondbacks
Phillies Stat Notes -- Better Offense Ahead
Two quick items in this edition:
- Comparison of hitters' first 12 games versus expectations
- Update of various key stats, compared to the "pre-Utley" period of 2011

Phillies Stat Notes -- First 10 vs. Early 2011
We're only ten games into the season, but it's worth a quick look at aspects of this team compared to last year.
Phillies Players' 2012 Milestones
It seems somehow frivolous when the sky is falling on the Phillies to be talking about individual milestones that they might reach this season.
Nevertheless, as a show of confidence that they will not average 2.0 runs per game, and might even win more than the current 40 games they are projected to, below are the milestones various Phillies are expected to reach.
Jimmy Rollins
Aside from securing a key defensive position for the next 3 (and likely 4) years, Rollins' new contract allows him to continue his assault on the Phillies' record book. This year alone, if he doesn't miss substantial time, he will finish the season high atop several team career lists:
- 2nd in At Bats (behind Mike Schmidt)
- 2nd in Doubles (Ed Delahanty)
- 2nd in Extra Base Hits (Schmidt)
- 3rd in Runs (Schmidt, Delahanty)
- 3rd in Total Bases (Schmidt, Delahanty), with over 3,000
- 3rd in Stolen Bases (Billy Hamilton, Delahanty), with over 400
- 3rd in Games (Schmidt, Richie Ashburn)
- 4th in Hits (Schmidt, Ashburn, Delahanty), with over 2,000
By the end of 2014 he has a good shot to be the Phillies'...
- all-time leader in ABs, Hits, and Doubles
- 2nd in Games played, Runs scored, Steals, and Total Bases
- 3rd in Triples, 7th in HRs, and 10th in RBIs
More, including the complete list, after the jump...
Phillies Platoon Splits and Lineup Construction
Charlie Manuel and the Phillies are struggling to find the best way to field an effective lineup in the absence of both Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. Below are a few proposed options, predicated on the idea of putting the best hitters on the field, according to their platoon splits, and using wOBA as the metric. I could have just easily used the flawed, but simpler, OPS, and reached the same conclusions.
I'm using splits from 2009-11 to get a somewhat larger sample, but one more recent than simply using career stats. Using only 2010-11 would not change results appreciably.
The concern here is primarily with getting the right hitters in the lineup, and less so with how they should line up, although I do make an effort to put them in a reasonable order.

Phillies Minor League Assignments
Since I a) have a hard time keeping up with what's in the Phillies system at each position, and b) like having a single source to go to, I put together the table below. These are the current minor league assignments as I know them. I will fill in Williamsport and GCL as they’re available.
Rankings of the top 30 are from Phuture Phillies. Each name links to the player's BB-Reference page, and the column headings have links to the team pages (MiLB in 1st row, and BB-Ref in 2nd).
The intent is to update this throughout the season -- let me know if there is anything that doesn't look right.
