I Like Our Chances

October 25, 2009— After the game yesterday, a lot of worries and speculations may have accumulated. Yesterday’s game offered a lot to show about how much we need to work on particularly on the offensive side of the ball. For starter’s they can work on not turning the ball over! Cain and Wide need to have better ball security, and also need to get into a better rhythm with the movement of the ball down the field

But did the defense ever step up!

That defense rose to the challenge yesterday and only allowed one offensive touchdown, on which Air Force got the ball at the 10 yard line.

Robert Johnson continued his amazing play yesterday as he led the charge with 15 tackles. No INT’s for the day but I’ll take 15 tackles from a safety any time anywhere. Let us not forget the impressive play by the big boys up front, Dave Kruger and Sealver Siliga. The young freshman (Kruger) and sophomore (Siliga) stepped up big time, putting pressure up the middle and stopping those option plays at the line.

This brings us to another topic from Saturday’s games

BYU’s déjà vu blow out by TCU!

TCU showed me a lot of signs of great excitement when it comes to the Holy War for this season. TCU’s defense did exactly what they did last year. Get in Max Hall’s face and cause problems for that offensive line all day long! The Frog’s offense also had a couple big plays down the field that should put a lot of worry into BYU fans little hearts. 75-yard touchdown pass, 30 yard running back screen pass touchdown, ran all over that BYU defense.

So BYU’s defense decided to show up for the Oklahoma game and they thought they could just take the rest of the season off.

Also who could forget Bronco’s outstanding record when it comes to playing ranked opponents, 2-7?

Now I know for Utah to compete with TCU they have got a lot of work to do to prepare for that game. I expect it to be a close defensive struggle just like last years was. I don’t expect Utah to just come out, roll over and die, like the Coug’s, but I do expect them to come out and play hard and try and get a victory. Would it be good for the conference if TCU went undefeated? Yes. Would it also shut up Boise State fans, and once again prove that you don’t deserve what they are getting? Yes.

When the Holy War rolls around here in a few more weeks, I’m not the least bit concerned with how the game will turn out. Cain and Wide will figure it out and get that offense in a good rhythm. That defense will be in Max Hall’s face all day…again. Not to mention I expect big plays out of David Reed and Jereme Brooks for that passing offense.

It's About Time

Now, I am a die-hard Utah fan and would never give any credibility to BYU; but this was huge. The conference really needed this to prove once again that the Mountain West deserves to be in the discussion for a BCS Bowl Bid, and the National Title. BYU looked great tonight, barring 4 turnovers and some lack of execution. There were a few things I noticed that do worry me for the game coming up in November versus Utah. First the BYU defense: I didn’t even know they had a defense! Let alone a defense that could shut down an offense that put up 51 points a game last year. Second would be this new young guy Bryan Karyia, he carried the load for the rushing side of that offense tonight and was a huge reason as to why they won. Third, the offense looked like the high potent offense that they had been preaching about all last season. They actually converted on third downs, drove the ball the length of the field for that go ahead score, and were able to do what they do best.

But, then again being a huge Utah fan, and becoming a possible student there here in a year. The Utes will be just fine come game time against the Cougs’. Utah’s defense will improve immensely, they looked a little scrappy here in the first game but I didn’t expect them to come out and be perfect on Thursday. Terrance Cain looked very impressive versus Utah State. Now granted, they did play against Utah State, but Utah State had the man behind that brilliant defense from last year. Cain will continue to get better and that offense will get even harder to stop. Once the defense starts to “gel” and get a little more into “mid-season form” they will be one of the best if not the best defense in the entire nation.

Also, I’d like to point out that Utah has something that Oklahoma doesn’t have….Matt Asiata. Now not to take anything away from the two fantastic 1,000 yard rushers they have, but Oklahoma doesn’t run the ball like Utah does and will. Oklahoma likes to air it out with their Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford, well then again when he’s not injured! BYU’s defense will not be able to contend and stop the power running of Asiata, nor will they be able to keep up with stopping David Reed or Jereme Brooks. They were not able to do it last year, and you can’t coach speed! Not to take anything away from Oklahoma, they are still Oklahoma. Not to make excuses for them but they did not have their starting center, star tight end, or the MVP of that team Sam Bradford.

Great job BYU. Stepping up and performing well against a very tough team in Oklahoma. Now it will look even better on Utah’s resume when we beat you! Also hopefully Oklahoma beats Texas! This is great for us! Have fun enjoying the spotlight, but don’t get too excited. You’ve still got to play Florida State, TCU, and the best team in the Mountain West…UTAH!!!

Favre Should Have Not Ever Come Back

Brett Favre, he's one of the best, if not the best if you look by some of his numbers that he has put up, quarterback of all time. No one can take that away from him. But, what are the Vikings thinking? He's 40, and has had serious screw ups coming down the stretch of the season the past two seasons. Threw a costly interception in the NFC Championship game against the Giants, and last season totally choked the end of the regular season to lose out on a playoff spot for the Jets. Is he going to bring in quite a bit of profit for the Vikings this season? Absolutely. Does Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels deserve to just be slammed to the bench in one day just because his name is "Brett Favre?" No!!! Jackson and Sage have been putting up with all the Favre garbage that has been going on this past off season and they have been going to the two-a-days, the training camps, the workouts and busting their butts to try and earn the starting spot for the Vikings this up coming season. Just because his name is Brett Favre, and he shows up to practice yesterday and he's working out with the first string? I don't care if he's Joe Montana coming out of retirement. You want the starting job on a NFL team? You earn it!! You sign a contract with the team BEFORE training camp so you can get your practice in with the rest of the team. You workout and you go to the two-a-days, you learn the system, you get acquainted with your receivers, running backs, offensive line, and coodinators. The Vikings are going to have a mediocre season this year, and the only way there gonna win games is because of Adrian Peterson, and their defense. They're going to miss the playoffs just barely and it's gonna be because Favre is going to screw it up for them. They're probably going to trade Jackson this season and there goes there future QB. Rosenfels will not play and eventually retire somwhere down the road. And John David Booty? Yeah no need to even go over all the reasons why he won't do this team any good.

A-Rod: Forgive and Forget

We have all heard the story, and the interview the past day...day and a half. Alex Rodriguez did use steroids, yes. He used them in 2001-2003 and when he says that he hasn't taken them since....I forgive him and everyone else just needs to forget about it. If he has been tested, and I guarantee he has, since 2003 when he claims he quit using them, and he hasn't been tested positive since? How can people still say that he can't still be considered one of the best ever to play the game. If you take a look at his numbers throughout his career, 2001-2003 were no different than most of the rest of his career. Some of his best years have been with the Yankees. Just like the Yankees organization stated, Alex is human, he is not immune to make mistakes, no one is. Was it stupid of him? Yes. Should he have maybe come clean about this when he's been asked before? Yes. But who is to judge?

Everyone may say he is a cheater and everyone who has ever done steroids, in a sense is a cheater. But if you really think about it....Having bigger muscles, quicker around the base paths, hit the ball harder when you make contact, it all boils down to one thing. STEROIDS DOES NOT MAKE YOU HIT THE BALL ANY BETTER THAN BEFORE! If you take steroids, it is not going to improve your hand-eye coordination, your muscle memory for swinging the bat, your fundamental skills that you have practiced since T-ball, or any other critical skill to play this game. You still have to do the work and work just as hard as you did before or after you ever took them. Its not a magic drug to make you a "super athlete" all it does is improves muscles. Not to mention the after affects are more unforgiving than the people who don't forgive someone who makes a mistake and does steroids.

Also, the other 103 names on that list. They need to be said and everyone needs to know the whole story. If your going to leak one of the best players to ever play this game, you have to leak everyone else. You already broke the rules of that you were going to keep that list confidential and never let it be leaked, well it has been leaked and now every name on that list needs to come out and be said.

Standing Alone, A Perfect 13-0

The University of Utah, as well all know is now the ONLY undefeated team in the FBS this season. There is not one legitimet reason as to why the only perfect record team doesn't deserve the No. 1 ranking at the end of this season, not one! They beat four, count them four (TCU, BYU, Oregon State, and Alabama) top 25 teams and dominated two out of the four. One of which beat the No. 1 seeded USC Trojans the week before they came to Utah and lost. TCU beat the only other undefeated team in beating Boise State in the Poinsettia Bowl. Which in turn, makes Utah better than Boise State this season.

I am sick of hearing all the excuses made by Alabama fans, Skip Bayless, and other reporters saying how Alabama was "deflated" and didn't come ready to play. Also that if they would've had Andre Smith that they wouldn't have given up all those sacks to the Utes. All that is a bunch of excuses for Alabama's lack of execution, lack of preparedness, and just not as good obviously as the Utes were this season.

The Utes deserve the No. 1 rank at the end of the season. Enough said. We all know the most likely won't because the BCS is such a joke they would never allow such a thing. When Florida beats Oklahoma on Thursday in the National Title Game. Utah should AT LEAST finish no less than No. 2 in the rankings. We'll all see if the BCS comes to their senses and realizes how big of a screw up their system is and changes it now!

How's that for not a "real BCS conference!?"

IN YOUR FACE SEC, ALABAMA, AND THE BCS!!!! You cannot say that the Utes are not good enough to be in the National Title conversation after that dominating win over a top SEC team. It wasn't a fluke, it wasn't luck, it was just total domination by the University of Utah. Alabama had only given up 13 sacks all season to the "best teams, best players, and best conference" and gave up EIGHT to a team that's not even in a "real BCS conference." Not to mention where was the rushing attack led by Bama's huge, cannot be stopped offensive line. Don't even comment about how, "well our best lineman was out, or we didn't have our best game." Don't make excuses for your team's lack to execute, lack of energy, and lack of showing up to play at all. In the first quarter it was over. Yeah you did have an awesome play by and amazing player in Javier Arenas's Punt return TD, but other than that, your team flat out sucked it up. Utah showed that they deserve everything they earned this year, and proved they should have had the chance to prove how good they are. Congrats Utes!!!

The BCS has to go!

This season, now more than ever, has shown how terrible this system is. First, look at the Big 12 Championship Game. The South division had a three way tie between Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech. When the BCS came out with its poll that Oklahoma was higher than the team that beat them head to head. That is a major reason why this system flat out is unfair to small non-BCS conferences and now apparantly to teams like Texas. I know it has been said many, many times. But they have to get a playoff system now! How can they honestly sit and determine that Oklahoma, deserves to be in this title game more that a USC, Texas, Texas Tech, Utah, Boise State, Penn State, or maybe even Alabama. The polls are so rich school and big school bias that schools like Utah and Boise State will never get a chance to show how good they really are. Not to bash on Oklahoma but they clearly DID NOT deserve to be in that Big 12 game last night. Sure they have scored alot of points, and put a hurt on some teams but what it really should come down to is who beat who, not who beat who by how much. Scoring over 60 points five games in a row is quite a feat but it also can show a lack of sportsmanship in running up the score when you could be resting your starters so that they don't get hurt.

The Pac-10, yes does not have a conference championship game, but why doesn't USC deserve to be in that Nat'l Title game as much as Oklahoma does. Maybe if they would have run up the score every game they would have gotten more "style points" from the computer polls.

Florida, does in my deserve to be there. They won when they needed to and beat a very good Alabama team in the SEC championship. They won the East division out right and has a shot at the National Title game. They beat number one who was undefeated. Florida is the only team that deserves to be where they are.

Oklahoma, and Ohio State do not deserve to be in the positions they are in. Ohio State most out of any school in the top ten does not deserve a BCS Bowl this season.

The National Title game SHOULD have been between Florida, USC, or Florida Texas. When you beat your rival in mid season, but they end up jumping you in the polls when you are tied, that is the biggest screw up of the BCS this year. This has to be the final season for this madness. This clearly shows how bad this system really is. Now they're going to have four to five schools that had outstanding seasons and deserved just as much of a shot at that title as the teams that will never get that chance. The BCS must change before this season ruins anymore teams seasons down the road. Because of the BCS's circumstances, they probably will not change anytime soon, which is a sad thing.

I'd like to have all of you who comment and read this post to give me what you think your playoff bracket should be if the BCS would have had a playoff system this year. Thanks and GO UTES!!

Improving the Mountain West

The Mountain West is obviously a conference that needs alot more rep and needs more respect. For teams such as Utah, TCU, and BYU they each have their fair share of outstanding seasons and tremendous programs. But still the MWC still gets no love from the BCS. I propose the idea of bringing in a few more tough teams to the conference to increase the Mountain West's power. Bring in Boise State, Fresno State, and maybe even Colorado from the Big 12. Drop teams such as San Diego State, and Wyoming. This would increase the toughness of the conference which could in turn get them a little more respect in the National Spotlight. Because, honestly, right now the Mountain West deserves an automatic bid into a big BCS Bowl game more than the Big East, or even the ACC.
