Remember those fat, orange bats from childhood?

Nate McLouth had one at age 4 and, as his parents recall, was blessed with the coordination to whack his father's overhand offerings onto the roof of their single-story home in Whitehall, Mich.

But that was not the part Rick McLouth found most impressive.

"Nate would take pitches," the elder McLouth said. "Honestly, if he didn't like what I threw, he wouldn't even budge."

Lucky or Good?

Many of you have probably heard the old saying "I'd rather be lucky than good". I've been thinking about this lately, especially after last night's rather fortunate game-winning hit by Matt Diaz combined with extraordinary pitching from Jo-Jo, Moylan, and Gonzo. I also just read gondeee's latest "where does he get this stuff" stat about the Bravos only scoring one unearned run so far this season -- fewest in the majors.

Anyway, I thought about running a poll asking this question -- Would you rather be lucky or good? -- as applied to your baseball team. Then I thought perhaps that needs to be tweaked a bit to make it more interesting. So now, my question is this:

Would you rather your baseball team be really, really talented but have only an average amount of luck? Or would you prefer a team with average talent, yet having really, really good luck?

Keep in mind, this question assumes that there is such a thing as "luck", which some people don't really believe in.

My cat, Buddy (depicted in my avatar, if you aren't familiar with her) was at Citi Field last night, putting a hex on the ballpark on Opening Night. The Mets lost to the San Diego Padres, 6-5. Yay, Buddy!
