"It still smells like champagne in here."

- Kevin Millar, April 4, 2005, Yankee Stadium

Red Sox Picks: #28, #77, #108

Given the Red Sox' track record of taking the best player available, regardless of slot and/or advisor, I'll be taking a similar path. Considering that the Sox have no compensatory picks, positional need won't play a factor. Of course, guys who play up the middle or pitch left handed will be given preferential treatment, but if the best player on the board is first basemen, we'll pull the trigger.

Last year the Sox had five of the first 108 picks, this year they have three in the firstHere's how I'll address each pick:

No. 28 -

Players haven't been falling a la Rick Porcello as much the past two years, but if that were to somehow happen, and he were to somehow get past the Yankees, then that would be the ideal choice. I don't see it happening this year. At this point, I'm not even sure who I'd target with this choice, as there are a ton of conflicting opinions on everyone from #2 on down. A college pitcher, or if one of the HS catchers slides a bit, they might be the pick. Again, I have no idea who'll be available, so this is tough.

No. 77 -

With this pick, ideally I'll go after a HS student with signability issues (think Westmoreland last year).

No. 108 -

Again, best player available. I'd really like to get this to a second line because I think it looks better that way, and, oh, success!

Final thoughts:

If you want to help, please help. I've been reading up on the draft for a couple months now, but I'm not going to sit here and say I know exactly what I'm doing. The more voices, the better. If you think I should take someone with a certain pick, make a solid case for your player and post it her. If anyone wants to be an Assistant Scouting Director, by all means, post here. WAUers will get preferential treatment.

I want to get some feedback from the community as to what they think the Tigers can get from Brent Clevlen this year? He absolutely murdered the ball in AAA at a .324/.417/.620 clip over ~240 ABs, and has performed well in the past. John gave him B in his 2006 rankings IIRC, and he's shown flashes before. He's managed to cut his K rate down and has a new stance this season, which he is crediting for some of his success, and he's still just 24. Break out your crystal balls and try to predict what he'll do this year, and in the future.
