The On-Topic TagPost of the Day

I for one am sad the Olympics are over. The Olypmics are pretty much awesome in every way.

Now that they're over though, the world can shift its focus to other types of sporting events, primarily one played by students at many of America's largest universities, and which includes the use of a peculiarly shaped ball (no, not a Quaffle).

Last night, the following exchange took place on Sunday Night Baseball

MORGAN: Manny is hitting almost .600 off Blanton in his career

MILLER: In 24 at bats too, so it's not like he's 3 for 5

MORGAN: Yes, as you can see it's quite a big sampling

Fracture of English language and lack of knowledge of anything scientific (or about baseball for that matter)... must be Joe Morgan

Also, Jose Lopez is OPSing .693 in August. We may not be out of the woods for the Loafie's Annual Second Half Slump of the Year just yet, which means that - oh what the hell who am I kidding, I just want to write the tags.

EDIT: It's now 8:55 and pdb posted an OTFPOTD but I spent a long time writing this so I'll leave it up anyway for discussion

This should suffice as today's off-topic post. First though, I'd like to mention how awesome the Olympics are from a completely non-political standpoint. It's truly amazing to watch the best athletes in the world at their respective sports all get together and give us this level of athletic competition for two and a half straight weeks. Yes, it's true, I don't the first thing about swimming techniques or beach volleyball strategy, but the athleticism, desire and hard work that these athletes put in is incredibly commendable and well worth watching. I can honestly say that I haven't gotten a whole lot of sleep the last couple weeks due to staying up late to watch the games.

All that being said, fuck you, NBC and ESPN, and whoever the hell was calling the Titans-Raiders preseason game on Fox the other day (I think it was Joe Buck). NBC - fuck you for not showing the games live on one of your ten or so subsidiary channels, and making the west coast wait three hours for the games. ESPN - fuck you for not only putting spoilers on your website (that's within our power not to check, so it's not that bad), but especially fuck you for running them in the bottom line and on in-game updates without giving a spoiler warning. I can't watch your station between 4PM and 8PM anymore because I don't want to know what happened. Lastly, fuck you, Joe Buck for out of nowhere blurting out that Michael Phelps had won his seventh gold medal during a football game that was PLAYED ON THE WEST COAST.

Other topics for discussion

What's your favorite state in America for any reason

Beer

Wine

Champagne

Things I want - a G5

Things that are better than watching the Mariners

People who you like more than Carlos Silva

Oh yeah - Carlos Triunfel --> AA

Lastly, overheard this morning on the vanpool

(referencing the Chargers preseason game which ended with them losing 7-6)

"you would think that they'd be able to do better than 7-6! I mean I know it was the third string players, but they've done what their whole live, play football? And all they could manage was 7-6? That's terrible."

Yeah... believe it or not, the defensive players have also been playing football their whole lives...

Remember how Kansas City picked up Horacio Ramirez? Well somehow they've now managed to TRADE Horacio Ramirez! They got back a 23 year old who's OPSing .716 in the Carolina league but still!

Today represents the only meaningful day on the Mariners 2008 calendar (besides all the ones that have FELIX!!!!!! on them). Today is the day that Jarrod Washburn may go away. Today is the day that Raul Ibanez may take his pride of defense to another (hopefully stupid team). Today is the day that someone will overpay for a 37-year old left handed specialist because hell, one time he got into a fight with Omar Vizquel.

History, however, suggests otherwise. It suggests something along the lines of Jose Cruz Jr, Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek for three decent to terrible relief pitchers. It suggests something along the lines of Randy Johnson for three completely unknown prospects (though to be fair that one turned out pretty well for us, but hell, I was thirteen).

Hell, maybe Lee will go crazy and the M's will be buyers at the deadline. I heard that Will Ohman is available!

To summarize - I predict that Jarrod Washburn is not going away. I predict that Raul Ibanez will accept arbitration. And I predict that Arthur Rhodes will be traded for two cordless optical mice, a case of gum and a night at the strip club, courtesy of Theo Epstein.

In case you're wondering about the hour of this post, I already saw NOLA post at like 4:30 AM, so here's something more off-topic

I'd like to use the Off Topic FanPost of the Day to express that yes, while I think many of the regulars are the biggest culprits in going off topic, that we come here to talk about baseball first and foremost and are grateful for the work that the Triumvirate and Gomez put into the site.

It's definitely fun to have the random off-topic threads (especially at work), but I for one am glad that lately the more serious baseball posts have talked a lot about, well, baseball. I know it's a little different this week becuase for the first time all season, the Mariners are actually somewhat interesting, but it's a refreshing change of pace. Hopefully we can contain the off-topicness to a thread or two a day instead of a few of the free-for-alls that have been pretty common the last couple of months.

That being said, this is the Off-Topic FanPost of the Day for the day. Have at it!

Today is the NBA draft where the second of Seattle's two competently run franchises (from an on-field standpoint) sets to determine their future. There are a lot of hot rumors surrounding the Sonics right now, who were originally linked to Arizona combo Jerryd Bayless, but now have apparently completed a trade down to #7 where they're expected to take Stanford C Brook Lopez. They've also been linked to UCLA combo Russell Westbrook at 4.

I was planning on using this post to semi-blog the first round (but I won't be in front of a TV, so I was just going to make fun of whoever ends up picking Anthony Randolph and his 6-11, 200 lb frame)

On the draft, I will continue to maintain that OJ Mayo is the best player in this draft IF he's allowed to play point. He's got great court vision, and the only reason his assists aren't higher is that his teammates at USC legitimately sucked.

I'll try to be impartial, but GO CELTICS! I can't stand Lakers fans =(. Also, I'd like to point out that when I said at the start of the series "Hey, Paul Pierce is really damn good," no one believed me. Guess what? Paul Pierce is really damn good. Plus he has the coolest intro ever in their pregame. Lately, I'm comparing him to Ray Lewis - very good players who acquired an "overrated" tag due to their teams failures and their off-field reputations (Lewis with the double-murder he was said to have witnessed, and Pierce with the barfight/stabbing incident) and then they lead their teams on great playoff runs and everyone realizes "Hey, Paul Pierce/Ray Lewis is really damn good!"

On an entirely unrelated note, today, I am the poster child as to why you do not forget to book tickets for your vacation until three weeks in advance (or two weeks, really)

So our (kind of)beloved home nine will be in Southern California to take on the hated Padres Friday June 27 - Sunday June 29. Are the SoCal LL-ers still interested in meeting up somewhere in SD before/after one of the games? I'd strongly prefer Saturday (I have plans on Friday).

Not sure how many of us there are now, but the Padres series has to be as good a time as any. Plus, I stil haven't gotten down to Petco, and I always welcome a chance to boo Jose Vidro in person.

Ninety-two words. Frankly, I'm stunned, since there really isn't that much to say here.
