UFC 'nothing but daylight' for Fuel TV

The Ultimate Fighting Championship means sunshine to Fuel TV.

"For us, the UFC has been nothing but daylight every day that we've put it on," said George Greenberg, executive vice president and general manager of Fuel. "And it's had a wonderful halo effect on all our ancillary programming."

Fuel launched its UFC programming at the start of this year. The channel will air its first live main card Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, featuring Jake Ellenberger vs. Diego Sanchez as the headline bout.

Wednesday's event will be the first of six main cards that Fuel TV will carry in 2012 under a seven-year agreement that UFC signed with the channel's parent, Fox. If the trend of the deal's first six weeks holds up, Fuel executives will be very pleased.

Fuel doubled its audience year-over-year in January, making it the channel's most watched month ever. The average audience during primetime hours more than tripled overall, and more than quadrupled among mixed martial arts' core demographic of males 18 to 49 years old.

At an estimated 36,000 viewers in primetime, the overall nightly audience for Fuel remains miniscule compared to networks that are staples of basic cable and satellite packages, such as sibling FX and UFC's previous broadcast home, Spike TV. But the upward trend has been "nothing but positive" so far, Greenberg told USA TODAY.

Adding a live event could buoy things even further. Fuel's live broadcasts of preliminary cards on Jan. 20 and Jan. 28 averaged an estimated 148,000 and 144,000 viewers, according to MMAjunkie.com.

"It has spiked the highest so far for us in terms of ratings." Greenberg says. "So this live product for us is a wonderful thing to have, and everything else around it that you promote in it will also have a wonderful effect on the potential ratings for the other products."

Since UFC came aboard, Fuel's shows outside mixed martial arts, especially those promoted during MMA-related broadcasts, Greenberg said. Ratings for Monday, an action sports night for Fuel, are up 60% to 75%, he estimated. The audience for shows that follow UFC programs have increased 25% compared to figures before the promotion moved to Fuel, he added.

Ultimately, UFC will generate 30% to 35% of Fuel's total programming, Greenberg said. Although live programming gets the biggest audience, UFC has the added benefit of doing well on successive showings.

"The best thing about all the UFC telecasts is they repeat very, very well," Greenberg said. "So if people didn't see it in the initial telecast, you don't have to worry, because you'll see it in the next couple of days, as well. ... The UFC audience is perhaps the most loyal and passionate fan base that I've ever seen. Just because you've seen Liddell and Ortiz fight in a particular event doesn't mean you don't want to see it again."

Does anyone know the resolution of HD UFC PPVs? 720p, 1080i, or 1080p? My guess is the former.

Also, does everyone else only get 2.1 channel audio? I only get sound out of the front left and right channels even though I have a 5.1 setup. Is that a UFC decision or one made by my cable provider, Verizon FiOS? Let me know if you get better than 2.1. NFL Sunday Ticket on my PS3 is also only doing 2.1 audio.

If we're going to pay $340/season and $59.99/PPV, I think they should provide us with better audio.

What fans saw on Saturday night's pay-per-view broadcast was the result of a bet that Hallman had with fellow fighters Len Bentley and Sterling Ford. In case you couldn't tell, Hallman did not come out on the winning end of that wager.

"I won't say what the bet was about, but I lost a bet to those guys and losing the bet meant that I got to wear some speedos," Hallman told Helwani.

"I thought it was funny," he added later. "I thought it was embarrassing for me. Obviously, that's why I had to do it. But I didn't think anybody would be cross about it."

"I don't think they're going to fire you over something like that," Hallman said. "I mean, he knows I went in there and fought injured because I didn't want to screw up their card. You can't fire somebody for doing something that's not illegal or not wrong. You can say, don't do it again. But it wouldn't be right to be like, okay, you wore legal trunks but I didn't like them so I'm going to fire you. Dana's not like that. He might say, if you do it again I'll fire you, but he's not going to fire someone for wearing trunks that were legal."
