Fear The Fin Joe Pavelski and Epics

So, if you want a simple summary of this post, it's this: Joe Pavelski ought to have an epic about him.

We start this "epic" unit in English today. We started off by looking at the characteristics of an "Epic Hero".

Look at some of these:

  • Able to conquer most problems, even though he has no superpowers.
  • Faithful to his family and his country.
  • Brave; although he feels fear, he overcomes it out of a sense of duty and responsibility.
  • Intelligent; he is able to rely on his brain to get him out of tough situations (doesn't pummel his way out)
  • Has the help of a higher force when needed.
  • The main character is "larger than life"

Now lets take a look at Joe Pavelski:

  • He's one of the best playoff performers out there right now, and he has no superpowers (not that we know of)
  • He helped the USA to the gold medal game
  • He always seems confident, and never shows his fear.
  • Always makes the smart play on the ice, and rarely gets into fights.
  • If he needs help, he has the D-Men and the rest of his line to help him out.
  • "The Big Pavelski". Sounds larger than life to me...
Simply put, Joe Pavelski fits all the characteristics of an "epic hero." All he needs now is an "epic" written about him. And with this note, I know I probably wasted a few minutes of your time. But I'm so dang pumped after the WIN!

Fear The Fin Yahoo! Sports FAIL

If this doesn't prove that Yahoo! Sports is being run by other Western Conference rivals, or just people that have no idea what they are doing... nothing will...

First... is a snapshot of the home page of Yahoo! Sports...

It looks normal... until you look at the "Now Trending" section... all the names are spelled correctly, except for 1... Let's take a closer look...

That's just a disgrace... especially since it redirects you to 'Evgeni Nabokov' when you click on it...

Fear The Fin Funny thing I noticed on FTF Twitter....

Dan Ellis and David Perron are following it...

Must mean utterly nothing, they can do whatever they want on the Internet... but for all you people that love rumors... have fun with it...

But... if we need some thinking about it... David Perron on the Sharks? No. Dan Ellis? Highly likely... and Patrick Marleau staying in San Jose? Well, apparently he bought a house in Los Gatos, so... that can mean utterly nothing...

Until September... GO SHARKS!

Fear The Fin If Nabby leaves... it's gonna be Heartbreak City...

You might hate him for not being the post-season performer you wanted him to be...

You might hate him for being played too much and Greiss and the other backups not getting enough playing time...

You might hate him for taking too much salary cap space because you think he is overrated...

But, he WILL have his jersey retired. Once a Shark, you're always a Shark (unless you are Brian Campbell or Bill Guerin)... and he has been one of the best...

Sure, I might have bias to keep him because he's my favorite player, but out of the short years of my life, I was taught hockey and the San Jose Sharks, and the first guy I remembered was him...he was the guy with the AWESOME accent, most awesome sense of humor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yCotVhb-qc&feature=related), the quick wit, and come on, the personality...

Seeing him in another uniform would just kill me, I mean, seeing him, Patty, or Jumbo Joe in another uniform IN A VIDEO GAME kills me a little... either retire a Shark or play a Shark is what I say... there should be no alternative...

Fear The Fin Pronger as a Shark?

No, its not happening, so sorry, there are no rumors or anything...

But watching the Philly game today, I thought to myself, "What would the reactions of Sharks fans be if we signed Pronger?" Yeah, it does seem kinda odd, but we need that physical presence come playoff time. I mean, he's better than Dan Carcillo, but I still think the edge goes to Nichol, the way he just pinballs off the people he hits...

So I wanted to throw it out there... what would you guys do if we had Pronger? Boo him? Cheer him? Or do we fire Wilson (wait, no, why would we toss out the best GM in the league?)

Fear The Fin Disappointment? No... BRING ON THE WORLD CUP!

Forget the playoffs now that the Sharks are out... if you're still feeling down... you need "The Good Life" (surprisingly, the lyrics have something to do with wanting the Cup... oh well)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yMtslWhcGY

If you have moved on, let's bring on the World Cup predictions!!!

I say this is the year that Argentina wins it ALL! (sorry Netherlands, you don't have my favorite player anymore... that was "Ruud" to keep him off... yeah, I know, it was a failure of a pun...

Anyways... bring on the predictions... and oh...

I HATE YOU CHICAGO! (haha, only fitting after they beat us)

Fear The Fin I'm Begging You, Show Your Loyalty!

We aren't the best fans for nothing... we are the loyal fans of the great San Jose Sharks (yes, they are great, no matter what happens in the playoffs).

Yet, the only issue I have is that in other blogs and places (Yahoo! Sports, and other places where people post comments), everyone takes aim at the Sharks for being bad and all (and they can do that, no problem), but my problem is that there is no one to defend our team. We let our team get beat up, made fun of, and we just sit there and take it (ironically, the Sharks players do the same). Now I don't mean go out and be cuss and all, but at least get out there and show everyone that we don't care if its Game 1 (or any game for that matter), we will always be Sharks fans, and they need to realize that.

Say what you want, flag it, mark it as spam, do whatever you want (yes, that includes raging and leaving hate comments), but just DO SOMETHING.... I'm begging you....

Fear The Fin What people have been saying on why Miller will win the Vezina..

Yeah... he might be the only obstacle to Nabby for winning the Vezina..

First off, the League says the Olympics and Playoffs do not influence the voting... but honestly, someone will remember Miller for his USA performance in the Olympics. I mean, can anyone really forget how he stood on his head till the very end?

Next thing is he is currently near the top at all the important goalie statistics (GAA, Wins, and SV%). He is currently second in GAA (currently at 2.16), seventh in wins at 37, and first in SV% (.931). The stats seem to line up in the favor of Miller, all of them except for wins (which Nabby almost always leads the league in...)

And the third reason is... well... Eastern Conference Bias. Looking at the past winners... how many times have the Western Conference won the Vezina Trophy? A shocking 3 times since the 1990-91 season. That's saying out of 18 seasons, the Western Conference won it 3 times. Sure there was Dominik Hasek... but still, facts are facts.

Yet, why should Nabby win? I mean, he seems to be "less superior" to Miller in stats and in the odds. So how can he win?

Can we say one thing? The Western Conference is MUCH SUPERIOR to the Eastern Conference in oh... everything except the Capitals... I'm not being mean or anything, but they stink as bad as rotten eggs. Washington currently has 101 points.. while second place, Pittsburgh, has 87 points (HEY! SID THE KID'S NUMBER!!!). San Jose is ahead by 2 points of Chicago, who is 5 points ahead of Vancouver.. a lot closer than 14 points...

Also, the Sharks seem to take less shots than the other teams. They really limit teams to not as many shots as they can (there are some exceptions), and seem to keep possession of the puck (not as of recently though).

And someone gave me the lame excuse that Miller was the reason why Buffalo is #3 in the East... well isn't Nabby one of the reasons the Sharks are #1 in the West?

Another side point, the MVP is "supposed" to go to the player that is the most valuable to his team... so then why the the most point getter almost always get it? I think a person like Patty should be nominated for it, cause well, he's just so great offensively and defensively (if Datsyuk wins the Lady Byng, I swear I would be dog-gone mad...)

Fear The Fin Whos to Blame for the first 2 losses: Nabokov or Defense?

First off... in the Kings and Avs game, the Sharks lost because of 2 reasons, soft defense... and not-at-its-best goaltending.. but honestly... which one is to blame and which needs to be fixed?

Defense

  • Played well in the Ducks game and resulted in a win
  • Seemed asleep in the Kings and Avs game
  • Not communicating well
  • Seems to be having trouble getting out of the zone (noticed in the Blue Jackets game going on right now)
  • Playing way (extremely) too soft

Goaltending

  • Okay in the Ducks game (not too many hard shots to save)
  • Letting in too many soft goals in the Kings game
  • Not able to see the shot coming from the point (defense's fault?)

Overall.... i think they seem even, but the main problem is that the Sharks need to look like they want it more... they seem a bit too laid back right now, and thats what cost them at the end of the season last year (and playoffs).
