Mile High Report Conventional wisdom on Manning

From the latest developments, it seems chances of Peyton Manning heading to Denver are at least very high. Elway said he wants a pocket passer and there may've never been a better one than Manning. This explains why the team would want Manning.

Now, Manning may also be interested in Denver. His other top suitors are Miami and Washington. In Washington, he'd have to play his brother Eli twice each regular season (+possibly in postseason as they both are or want to be contenders). Not an ideal situation: they will compete for the same opportunity. In Miami, he'd have to play Brady twice each regular season. Again, not ideal: if there is anyone who Manning fears, it would be Brady and his bunch. But Denver offers a relatively easy conference, which was won with a mere 8-8 record repeatedly in recent years.

I think now is the time to check a few thoughts on Peyton Manning that have become conventional wisdom, but are not necessarily true.

Mile High Report Collapse like Detroit: only Rams are worse

Detroit Lions started 2007 season on a high note. They went 6-2 in the first half, which culminated in memorable 44-7 thumping of the Broncos. Jon Kitna's preseason prediction of more then 10 wins seemed possible. But they were not a winning team. They were pretenders. They would only win one game the rest of the way and finish 7-9, to continue losing season streak. Of course, next year they will set NFL record by going 0-16 and are barely any better this year.

After starting 2009 season 6-0, Denver has gone 2-7 after the bye. During this time, Detroit had 1 win, and so did St Louis Rams. All other teams had at least 2 wins. This is truly basement-level results. Some losses were close, some were blowouts. But the bottom line remains the same: Broncos are not getting W.

I don't think we will go 0-16 next year. But all those 3-13 to 6-10 predictions do not look as outlandish as they were earlier in the season.
