Most Obnoxious School's Cheer
I believe our Rammer Jammer may be the most hated cheer in the country, if you sit back and think about it, it is probably the most obnoxious cheer there is. BUT I LOVE IT. If I'm on the other side it has to sting, I hope the University always lets our band continue to play it. It always makes my hair stand on end when I sing or listen to it after a game.
I can't think of another cheer that emphasizes what just happened in a game or frankly rubs it in the opponents face as much as our cheer.
When I was at school at UA from '78-'82 we use to sing Rocky Top at Lee's Tomb when 3 on a String played it, but Peyton Manning leading their band after kicking our ass at Legion Field is the closest thing I can think of that compares to Rammer Jammer.
Are there any other school's cheers that compare?
Reverse
I don't believe we ran a wide receiver reverse last year. I was curious to see if you guys saw that as well. It would be interesting to see us run one with Maze, it might have been that we just did not have the talent to do it last year. Do you guys think that it may be in the game plan this year? Do we have a reciever other than Maze that is capable of running that play?
This question I ask reminds me of playing golf about 20 years ago in a Jefferson County Alabama Alumni Association golf tournament. I happend to be in a group with Paul Finebaum and at that time our Offensive Coordinator, Mal Moore. At one point I decided after as a team we made a bad decision on which putt to choose, I asked Mal if he had ever felt pressure or second guessed about a decison he had made. We all knew that at that time Finebaum second guessed every decison that Mal made.
Mal, being the man that he is, said that the only time he felt pressure about a decision did not have anything to do with the Press. He told us this story:
In the 70s we were playing Houston, which was when we ran the wishbone. If you remember the game we were wearing them out. Bear kept coming up to him, saying "Run the reverse Mal, run the reverse." Mal said that as Bear was saying this to him, we had just received the ball on our own 10 yard line. He was not about to run the reverse deep in our own territory. We ran the wishbone and finally got out to midfield. The whole time Bear kept telling Mal to run the reverse.
So, once we got to midfield, Mal calls a reverse. By that time their weakside linebacker was tired from chasing our men down. He was there to stuff the reverse down for no gain.
Bear came up to Mal and said "I meant the other way Mal".
Mal stated that there is no bigger pressure having Bear Bryant tell you what to do. He is the man and I must say the way Mal told that story I am glad he is our Athlethic Director.
