The Legend of the Jorts

I just read this story regarding the origin of the now wildly popular jean shorts insult. I have always wondered where the saying came from (and have always contended that there are just as many jort-wearing UGA fans as UF fans. Some of the article is obviously written in jest, but I am wondering if there really is a Kevin Davis and whether he is the originator of the insult.

I consider Kyle the authority on all historical UGA matters, so I'm wondering - is it true? Or has the jorts insult been around longer? I surely can't remember hearing anything of it when I was in school (c/o '93). If you don't know the answer, we may have to consult Cale Conley, who is pretty much the authority on the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (although I beleive his book may have pre-dated the jorts era).

Enjoy your Homecoming this weekend,

Brooking a trash-talker now?!

Maybe we should have kept Keith Brooking around. I mean, sure, his skills have diminshed to the point that he has very little use on the field, but at least we could have preserved his reputation as a hard working, humble player with a team-first attitude. I am not sure who that was we saw yesterday wearing Brooking's number for the silver and blue. He sort of looked like Ray Lewis, well, except for the making great plays part. He only looked like Lewis AFTER the whistle...jawing, talking, jumping up and down....doing the bird dance? Really? Keith Brooking? It takes less than one season playing for the Cowboys and one of the proudest LBs in Falcons history has turned into this?

I thnk he had 2 tackles in the box score - but at least a dozen dances, celebrations and other nonsense that doesn't show up in the box score. Oh yeah, it looked like he was the one who blew the assignment when Weams was quarantined for the easiest TD you'll see in the NFL.

I understand he spent a lot of time apologizing to the Falcons after the game for his behavior - but he's always been better than that.

Yesterday I stopped by Dreamland's Peachtree Corners, GA location (there are 2 locations in the Atlanta area according to their menu board) and had a fantastic lunch. I know they are famous for their ribs, but I was in work clothes and didn't want to chance going back to work with barbecue sauce all over my shirt. I had the chopped pork sandwich instead with a cup of stew and both were fantastic. The stew was a pleasant surprise - it rivals the best in town here. The sandwich was good, and it was huge - and that is the regular size.

I definitely need to make it back there for the ribs though. Also, I noticed they catered.....so any of you guys who might be in town say, early December, might think about having some familiar food at your tailgate. I'm sure it's not the same as the original, but it is pretty damn good.

LSU @ UGA - Who do you want to win?!

Tough call, but I think I'll have to go with UGA on this one. I think I would rather have LSU moping after a loss when we come to town instead of riding high and coming home undefeated to play the #1 ranked team. I think that would put their fan base into a frenzy and make our task a little more difficult.

Often it is tougher catching an angry team coming off a loss, but in this particular case, I'd rather LSU not be unbeaten when we play them.

What do yall think? We have to do something this weekend beside worry about concussion symptoms!

First Ever Trip to Lexington - any suggestions?!

Hey UK faithful- I will be making my first trip to Lexington this weekend for the game and I am very much looking forward to visiting your fine campus and stadium. Any tips or "must sees" would be greatly appreciated. That includes bars/restaurants to visit Friday night, gameday parking tips and tailgating areas to visit in and around campus.

I promise that our group does not talk trash nor wear jean shorts. We are just looking forward to a great weekend of football and bourbon amongst the Sea of Blue.

I enjoy reading your site- especially during basketball season, as our fans aren't very knowledgable once football season ends. (Some of your members like to visit the O&B Hue site and torment us a little once basketball starts - all in good fun though).

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

While I'm sure our rivals will cry foul and claim that this is just another example of the Evil Gators sweeping another arrest under the carpet, it appears to be the same result that any other student would receive.

I am sure that Coach Strong will make Doe pay a much harsher penalty than a fine and picking up some trash, but it is good to hear that our already stout linebacker corps should soon be back to full strength.

The opening game line may have just jumped to 75.

Richt vs. Meyer for years to come?!

Although it isn't the first time he has responded to the unfounded rumor that he is eventually headed to South Bend, Urban Meyer again reiterated that he's going to be in Gainesville for a while. As Coach Richt appears to be a long-timer in Athens, we could be witnessing the early stages of one of the great coaching rivalries in college football. The last 2 games have even provided a little spice to the annual showdown.

Although Meyer is sometimes thought of as an arrogant jerk and Richt as boring, UF and UGA are both lucky to have coaches who appear committed to their respective programs for the long haul. And why shouldn't they be? Those programs are clearly two of the best in the country. I don't think Notre Dame or Miami (where Richt's name is sometimes associated) are even in the same ballpark right now.

Janoris breaks the golden silence of spring

"Silence is Golden." You see the statement before motion picture movies at the theatre. For college football teams - especially those who look primed to make a serious championship run, silence truly is a welcome sound. For it means that your team is not in the news during the spring and summer months, a time when newsmakers always do so for the wrong reasons.

We were thinking that only injury could derail the 2009 version of the Gator train, but we forgot about idiocy. You know - fighting in downtown Gainesville and not stopping when ordered by the police to do so. Things like getting tased and then briefly running from the police.....all bad and all stupid.

Janoris Jenkins is the latest Gator to have a mugshot on file with the GPD. As usual, the team is "waiting on the results of the investigation." At worst, Jenkins will miss some games (likely the first 2 games against our typical patsy opponents and then return for Tennessee). Since he has no previous record, he will like use the deferred prosecution option and have to complete some community service. At best, Meyer will "handle it internally" whatever that means, and we will be called a bunch of thugs by our rivals. Whatever the outcome, it is a black eye for the UF football team. Let's hope that somehow, this is the only incident of the summer.

It must be difficult to sleep at night when you are a head football coach of 18-22 year olds who are in a place like Gainesville with all kinds of time on their hands for the summer.

This might be the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen/heard. This is a member of the US House of Representatives from the 3rd District of Florida (parts of Duval, Clay, Alachua, Putnam, Volusia, Marion, Lake, Seminole & Orange Counties) thoroughly embarassing the University of Florida with her congratulatory remarks. I'm sure she means well, but the speech is the most painful thing I have ever forced myself to sit through.

Below is the link to the speech via Withleather...you have been warned

I sure hope that "Irving Meyers" can keep this streak going....and that someone unseats this lady before the end of next season.

Earlier this week, Gator placekicker Jonathan Phillips was granted a medical hardship by the NCAA (for missing virtually all of the 2007 season), allowing him to return to the team to kick in 2009. Hopefully Phillips' extra season will go as well as Phil Trautwine's did and he'll get another ring for his efforts.

Although this wasn't exactly headline news, it is very comforting to know that the Gators will return an experienced kicker who converted all but one field goal attempt last season. You never know when your title hopes may rest on a last second field goal attempt, and it's always better to have an experienced guy in that situation than a first time kicker.

Here's the link:
