Should Bellator Clear Up Their 170lb Title Picture With A One Night Tournament?
Ben Askren vs. Jay Hieron last weekend for the Bellator WW Championship was a very close fight and the decision in Askren's favor had some (like Hieron himself) suggesting an immediate rematch. The problem with that, of course, is that the next WW tournament winner will be crowned Nov. 12th and he is guaranteed a shot at the champion. I propose a simple, elegant solution to the problem that might even draw some new interest for the company heading into next season if they promote it right.
The Season 6 premiere show should have a four man, one night tournament with the following format:
Semifinal A: Ben Askren vs. Lima/Saunders winner - 3x5
Semifinal B: Jay Hieron vs. Rick Hawn - 3x5
One Non Tournament Fight - 3x5
Final: A Winner vs. B Winner - 5x5
This scenario would solve most of the perceived problems in the division:
-Barring an injury in the semifinal round, the night ends with one unquestioned #1 at 170lbs in Bellator
-The Lima/Saunders winner gets his shot at Askren in a timely fashion
-Hieron, at 35, doesn't have to go through another 8 week tournament
-Many felt Season 4 Finalist Rick Hawn got hosed in his fight with Hieron
-It frees space in the planned Season 6 tournament, where they already have plenty of returning tournament vets to choose from such as Brent Weedman, Luis Santos, Chris Lozano and Lyman Good
Thoughts?

Thiago Michel Shines In Final Fight Before USA Debut
On Saturday, World MMA Scouting Report #1 Lightweight Thiago Michel (9-2) got sent off in style, taking on Rodrigo Cavalheiro (2-1) in the main event of Brazil Fight 5 in Minas Gerais. Michel, a Belo Horizonte resident, was clearly the main attraction on the card, televised live on Combate TV, and he lived up to expectations with a highlight reel finish in the opening round. With a Bellator contract in hand, Michel is likely to make his debut for the promotion in the fall, and is considered a top candidate for the planned Season 6 lightweight tournament.
Carioca On His Way To Bellator Too
In other Scouting Report news, MMAJunkie.com reports that #5 ranked middleweight Bruno Santos has verbally agreed to terms with Bellator. The 24 year old grappler has cultivated a Fitchian eight fight, twenty eight round streak of decision victories since 2009.

No Russians in UFC in Five Years?
It may be hard to believe, but there doesn't seem to have been a fighter signed from Russia since Ansar Chalangov's brief UFC stint in 2005-2006, when he fought Thiago Alves and Josh Koscheck, losing to both.
There is one exception, since Dennis Siver was born and grew up in Russia, but his career began in Germany and he's never competed in Russia or represented any Russian club. And before anyone mentions them... Andrei Arlovski and Vladimir Matyushenko are both from Belarus.
How come UFC is so cold to Russia? In previous years, one could argue that the talent wasn't there for them to sign perhaps, but it's not the case now. With M-1 and some other Russian promotions now on state television, the ranks are booming with potential major league prospects. Some of the prominent names they should look into include:
FW: Rasul Mirzaev (5-0) - Knocked out former Sengoku Champion Masanori Kanehara
LW: Alexander Sarnavskiy (15-0) - Submitted UFC vet Doug Evans
WW: Shamil Zavurov (18-1) - Beat Sengoku GP runner-up Yasubey Enomoto
Andrey Koreshkov (6-0) - Only 20 years old and already crushing people
MW: Vyacheslav Vasilevsky (15-1) - Top MW in Europe, beat UFC vet Xavier Foupa-Pokam
Andrei Semenov (30-9-2) - Just beat Luigi Fioravanti pillar to post after a three year retirement
HW: Vitaly Minakov (5-0) - 3x Sambo World Champion, 240lbs
What do you think? Should UFC open up the ranks and let some Reds get In The Mix(TM)?
Videos of each fighter after the jump.

Ring of Combat 36 Results - June 17, 2011
It was a perfect night for the Serra-Longo Fight Team at Ring of Combat 36 Friday. The usual Tropicana stomping grounds in Atlantic City saw host to four fighters from the powerhouse Long Island fight camp, all of them picking up big wins.
In the evening's main event, Pete "Drago" Sell's return to ROC seemed like a lost cause initially, as defending Welterweight Champion Eliah Harshbarger threw him around relentlessly and gave him an ugly mouse under his left eye. But Drago came charging back in the second round, securing top position then passing for an incredible reverse triangle straight armbar combo submission to claim the belt as the partisan crowd erupted in jubilation.
10th Ranked Lightweight in the 2011 World MMA Scouting Report Al Iaquinta dueled with Brazilian prospect Gabriel Miglioli in one of the most intense ROC fights ever, both showing amazing technical ability and heart for prospects with a combined seven pro fights worth of experience. The rangier Miglioli controlled the first round, dropping Iaquinta with punches for a near-KO and applying a couple close submission attempts. Round two turned into a complete brawl, with Migloli trading short punches to the head and body for Iaquinta's jabs and high right roundhouse kicks. In the final round, Iaquinta seemed in complete control with a damaging ground and pound attack, but a fading Miglioli somehow escaped, landed a hard knee to the body and then managed his own takedown. Iaquinta, who never stopped attacking despite taking hard shots in every round, scored a reversal in the dying seconds and ended the fight taking Miglioli's back. In the end, the judges rewarded Iaquinta's tenacity with a close split decision victory.
Three round bantamweight and flyweight title bouts were featured as the night's two co-main events. In 135lb action, Team Bombsquad product Aljamain Sterling captured the belt in just his third pro fight, taking a convincing split decision over Claudio Ledesma. And in the 125 title affair, Sean Santella was awarded a unanimous decision despite being exhausted for the final two rounds and having his takedown game completely shut down in the second half of the fight by former Strikeforce featherweight Tito Jones. Jones was visibly displeased upon hearing that he had failed to win a single round on any of the judge's scorecards.
Quick Results:
Pete Sell def. Eliah Harshbarger via R2 Submission (Reverse Triangle Straight Armbar)
Aljamain Sterling def. Claudio Ledesma via R3 Decision (Split)
Sean Santella def. Tito Jones via R3 Decision (Unanimous)

2011 World Scouting Report Update: May Recap
by smoogy
The latter half of May has been positively filthy with Scouting Report action, but the slow trickle of results coming in from the more obscure promotions has made the task of compiling an accurate, timely weekend recap difficult lately. In lieu of that feature's absence over the past two weeks, here is a jumbo-sized recap covering fourteen fights over the last three weeks of the month. A Special Achievement Award is in order for Konstantin Gluhov, who captured his second consecutive Warrior's Honor one-night-tournament title. Gluhov has won a staggering five straight tournaments in the last nine months: the two from Warrior's Honor (Ukraine), the Oleg Taktarov Cup (Russia), the UCFC 20,000 Euro, 16-Man Tournament (Austria), and the Pancrase FC Cup (France).

Scouting Report Update: Weekend Results - April 29th-30th
It was another week of mixed results for fighters selected in the World MMA Scouting Report. #2 Featherweight Taiki Tsuchiya was knocked out by Shooto stalwart and former Champion "Lion" Takeshi Inoue at Shooto Tradition 2011 in Japan. Meanwhile, #6 Lightweight Reza Madadi came away with a controversial decision victory over UFC regular Rich Clementi in what turned out to be a bitterly contested title fight in Madadi's home country of Sweden. During the staredown at the weigh-ins, Clementi responded to an overly aggressive Madadi with a hard headbutt attempt that thankfully missed it's target.

Scouting Report Update: Weekend Results - April 21st-23rd, 2011
Last week it was #7 Middleweight Jordan Smith (pictured, GIF after the jump) getting crushed in 11 seconds at the hands of UFC and WEC veteran Tim McKenzie. The K-1 World Grand Prix is this Sunday. UG Luminary Nickman9000 has created another one of his epic comics to whet your appetite. It's a battle to the death for ultimate supremacy, who will emerge victorious? Can Alistair Overeem climb the mountain top and claim the K-1 throne in the name of MMA? Or will Semmy Schilt make history with his fifth WGP crown?? And will I come up with enough of a fluff introduction to meet the 75 character minimum for fanposts???

Free Agent Notebook: Divisional Leaders
FREE AGENT NOTEBOOK - DIVISIONAL LEADERS
September 28th 2010
by smoogy
After a Fedoresque absence from the scene for almost a year, Free Agent Notebook returns to address some of the burning questions about the Mixed Martial Arts market in 2010. This comeback installment takes stock of who is making the biggest waves in each of the major "money" divisions in the sport: Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight, Weltweight, and Lightweight.
HEAVYWEIGHT (265lbs)
Tim Sylvia
Age: 34
Country: USA
Pro Record: 27-6

Tim Sylvia hit rock bottom in his mixed martial arts career following a nine second KO loss to Ray Mercer in an MMA vs. Boxing-themed match in July of 2009, his third consecutive defeat. But thanks in part to the deft hand of manager Monte Cox, Sylvia has bounced back with three straight stoppage victories while campaigning as a main event attraction on independent MMA cards. "The Maine-iac" has headlined two of the five pay per view events held by various promoters in 2010 at the price point of $29.99, and is tentatively planned to top another card versus Pedro Rizzo in a match-up of two former UFC Heavyweight titans. If he emerges victorious from that bout, will Sylvia simply continue headlining third party PPV events, or will it be time to make a multi-fight commitment to UFC or Strikeforce?
Honorable Mention: Hae Joon Yang, Todd Duffee, Paul Buentello, Ricco Rodriguez
LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT (205lbs)
Alexandre Ferreira
Age: 31
Country: Brazil
Pro Record: 18-6

Better known by his nickname "Cacareco", Alexandre Ferreira is the heir apparent to Lyoto Machida as the least desirable opponent to draw in the light heavyweight division. Even "The Dragon" himself is said to have declined a fight with Ferreira prior to his title reign in the UFC. With a seven fight winning streak dating back to 2007, Ferreira's inability to get international bookings is especially unfortunate considering the ongoing success of his countrymen. Time after time, leading fighters on the Brazilian MMA circuit have jumped to the UFC and instantly established themselves among the top class in their respective divisions. With his elite submission ability and agressive fighting style, Alexandre Ferreira has the potential to follow compatriots Paulo Thiago, Junior Dos Santos and Charles Oliveira to international prominence.
