Juan Rivera vs. Garret Anderson

2009 Stats as of 6/18.

Juan Rivera - .316/.352/.505

Garret Anderson - .260/.294/.367

Does anyone still think it was a dumb idea to sign Rivera instead of Anderson?

Though we're only about 40% through the season, I think the answer is obvious. Rivera, as many of us had suspected, has produced once given a full-time job. Save your comments about GA being a second half player and point to his .851 post All-Star OPS the last three years. Rivera has also performed well in the second half the last three years, posting a .841 OPS during that time period. And let's not forget that the first half of the season counts for something, too.

I am thankful that Tony Reagins made this decision.

It looks like GA won't accept a part-time role.

GA says he's produced and he was surprised the team didn't pick up the option since he feels that's what he's worth.

"The reason I was a little surprised they didn't pick up my option is I produced. I had a very good season, especially considering how it started. You look at what the market is, and the $11 million is pretty fair market value for my performance. I've been consistent, and I haven't declined."

Now, I haven't been a supporter of bringing GA back because I think he clearly has declined and we need put a better hitter in the LF/DH role. But, one of the arguments made by supporters of bringing him back is that there's still a role for him in some sort of a platoon. I sort of agree that he could be useful in a limited role, but think that someone like Morales and Rivera have more potential and it's worth taking a risk on them.

I don't see how GA fits in on this team in 2009 with his perspective of his performance. We need better production from some who's going to play LF 60% of the time and DH the other 40%.

CC Sabathia?

The topic of CC Sabathia came up in the Judy Garland thread. He's long been rumored to be someone that we're going to go after, but I have concerns.

First, I think we need to address our offensive problem. All spare change the organization has should go to Mark Teixeira and signing/developing hitters in his image.

Second, and more to the point of this post, I'm worried CC Sabathia is due to break down. I could very well be wrong, as I'm only basing this on the number of innings he's pitched the last two years versus the rest of his career.

Innings Pitched by CC:

2001 – 180
2002 – 210
2003 - 197
2004 – 188
2005 – 196
2006 – 192
2007 – 241
2008 – 253

Is he an overworked rental ready to break down? Anyone have some deeper thoughts on this?
