San Diego Recruiting Preview with Tom Sheridan of North County Times
Some of the biggest names in recruiting world came from San Diego. We should all remember the name Dillon Baxter and what kind of noise he made by going... and leaving the Trojans. We are also fortunate to have a few athletes from SD on our roster - Mustafa Jalil, Stefan McClure, Brian Schwenke, etc. Tom Sheridan, reporter of SD's North County Times, graciously agreed to tell us a bit more about what Cal fans can expect from the prep stars in the region. Make sure you follow his work on North County TImes and Twitter @NCTVarsity.

Oregon Ducks Preview with Rob Moseley of Oregon Register-Guard
As long as Chip Kelly is around and Phil Knight keeps on pumping money into Eugene, I feel that Oregon will be our stiffest challenge in the Pac-12 North in the near future. Kelly's specialty read option offense has taken the Ducks to two Rose Bowl and a BCS National Championship appearances. Perhaps when the NCAA does decide to levy its penalty, Kelly will take that call from the pros and bolt. Dunno about you but I am really looking forward to Chip vs NFL press/media. To give us a quick look into the Ducks for 2012, we have Rob Moseley from the Oregon Register-Guard. Make sure you follow his diligent work on Twitter and Oregon Football Blog.
SoCal Recruiting Preview with Eric Sondheimer of LA Times
SoCal is a hotbed for athletes and prospects who can immediately contribute and make a difference. Robert Woods and Marqise Lee are the good ones that come to mind. We are looking to Bryce Treggs, Kenny Lawler, and Darius Powe to make similar types of impact. Here at CGB, we are honored once again to have Eric Sondheimer, High School Sports Reporter of the LA Times, to tell us more about the upcoming recruiting scene. Make sure you follow Eric on Twitter and LA Times.

Shaq Thompson, ATH Grant Union (Sacramento, CA) visited Washington officially [$1]. Seems as if the Huskies have moved up to co-lead with the Golden Bears for Shaq's services in 2012 [2]. Thompson is committed to play in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl [3].
"I had a great time, I was actually surprised how nice it was up there," Thompson said. "I didn't really know what to expect coming in to be honest but the trip as a whole was better than I thought it would be. It's a real family atmosphere at UW and I loved being around the players and coaches."
Thompson was hosted by his former Grant teammate James Sample.
"James really likes it there," Thompson said. "He has a shoulder injury so he's probably going to have to redshirt but he likes the team and the school a lot and told me I would fit in well there. We played safety together at Grant and he looked out for me when I was younger so it was great to see him again [4].

Zach Hoffpauir, S (Cal) Centennial (Peoria, AZ) quotables:
"I loved everything about the place [Berkeley] when I went there on an unofficial visit. I loved coach Pendergast, coach Tedford, coach [Ashley] Ambrose, and I feel that I have a pretty good chance of competing as a freshman for a spot. I liked their baseball program when I was there, too [1]."
"I'd say my ball-skills are one of my strengths," said Hoffpauir. "I get to the ball quickly and cause a lot of turnovers, punching balls out and stripping them. I have good closing speed, covering ground well and my instincts are good, too.
The all-state safety chose Cal over Arizona and Stanford and is bullish on Cal's future.
"I think we're going to be really good," said Hoffpauir. "I think Shaq Thompson's coming in, too, and I know our quarterback, Zach Kline. He's really good. There's lot of great young talent there and I know Coach Pendergast will continue to work with the defense and get them on point.
"The future looks great [2]."

Kenny Walker, WR (Cal) Kennedy (Richmond, CA) verbal commitment quotables:
"I really liked everything about Cal," Walker said. "I like the offense a lot, it's receiver friendly and you can make a lot of plays there. I like the coaches a lot and especially Coach [Jeff] Tedford. The depth chart is great and Cal really needs receivers right now [$1]."
"Kenny is very highly into academics," Bobino [Michael, Kennedy Eagles' Head Coach] said. "He chose Cal not only because of their football program, but he also likes what they offer education-wise with the business program. He wants to be a business and accounting major [2]."
Walker has also starred on the track. He's reached the California Interscholastic Federation state track and field championships three straight years in the 110-meter hurdles, placing sixth the past two years. He finished one spot ahead of De La Salle's Michael Barton, also a Cal football commit and a former Pop Warner teammate, this past June. He said he would consider running track at Cal if the football coaching staff approved [3].
"That was very nice beating Barton," said Walker, with a laugh. "We've been kickin' it since we were kids and played Pop Warner together when we were little. It was nice to run against him. He's actually gotten a lot faster. He didn't used to be so fast. He's been trying to get me to Cal for a while. We just talk about me, him, Shaq Thompson and Zach (Kline) playing together.
"I've been talking with Byron Marshall, trying to get him to Cal, too. I know he's really interested but he's still kind of undecided right now [4]."

Shaq Thompson, ATH Grant Union (Sacramento, CA) plans to visit Florida, Notre Dame, Oregon, UCLA, USC, Washington. Washing could be an early favorite because of the coaches and his best friend James Sample from Grant [1]:
"Shaq can do it all," Grant coach Mike Alberghini marveled. "He doesn't even know how great he is."
He is great enough to be considered one of the top recruits in the country. As humble as he is dominant and as unselfish as he is spectacular, Thompson aims to add to his 1,892-yard, 25-touchdown rushing season from last fall. He is fit and eager, forever pained that he wasn't close to even 70 percent in the playoffs last fall due to a deep bone bruise on the ball of his heel. He was still fast, mind you.
Just not Shaq Fast.
"That still bothers me," Thompson said. "It took me a long time to get healthy."
Golden Recruiting Wire: Michael Barton of De La Salle Ready for A National Championship Run
Tedford & Company
Michael Barton, LB (Cal) De La Salle (Concord, CA) and the Spartans are going after a National Championship:
De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) 14-0, CIF Open Division champion
Top Players: QB Bart Houston (6-4, 215, Sr.); LB Michael Barton (6-1, 215, Sr.); LB Michael Hutchings (6-3, 190, Jr.)
Outlook: Experienced quarterbacks have been a staple of some of the best teams in De La Salle's storied history, and Houston certainly fits that bill. The three-year starter, who has committed to Wisconsin, will be joined by 10 other returning starters from a team that cruised past Servite (Anaheim, Calif.), 48-8, in the Open Division bowl game. Barton has committed to Cal, while Hutchings is one of the nation's top junior linebackers [1].

The Bears have one of the smallest classes in the country and though they have four very good players in it... there's just four players. They have a possible freshman starter in quarterback Zach Kline and perhaps this summer's best wide receiver Bryce Treggs but there's been little movement in adding to them. The Bears are in on a lot of prospects and defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi is one of the better recruiters out there but things need to pick up in Berkeley [1].

Jaydon Mickens, WR Dorsey (Los Angeles, CA), KeiVarae Russell, RB Mariner (Everett, WA) both have Washington and Cal in their leader group [1].
"Notre Dame, Cal and Washington are my favorites. Things could change, but I doubt it; and more than likely I'll be committing to one of those three. I don't have a leader among those three and there are actually things about each of those schools that stand out and make them unique. - Russell"

- Hardy Nickerson Jr., LB (Cal) Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, CA) quotables:
At 6-feet, 220 pounds, Nickerson picked Cal over Nebraska, Colorado and Washington State. His father, Hardy, starred for the Bears in the mid-1980s before a standout 16-year NFL career.
"He really let me make my own decision," Nickerson Jr. said. "I really appreciated that [1]."
"I really like Cal because they're well-rounded, with their great academics and campus life," said Nickerson, Jr. "I also really like all the change that's happening there, with the new coaches, new facilities and new stadium. It just seems like there's a new excitement coming to Cal football and I want to be a part of it [2]."
"I was really excited to be a part of the Bear family, and I was just totally comfortable being there and just wanted to make it official," Nickerson, Jr., says. "My dad, it was more, 'You've done this by yourself. My name is not your name. You make your name.' He was just excited for me, proud of me and he wasn't pushing me to make a commitment or anything. He just wanted me to take my time, really evaluate everything [3]."

Bryce Treggs, WR St John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) has Cal leading Stanford and Notre Dame. USC recruitnik is calling Treggs to Cal [1]. Treggs is attending Big Men on Campus camp yesterday and today hosted by Keyshawn Johnson and Brian Kelly [2]. Golden recruits Jordan Payton of Oaks Christian, Shaq Thompson of Grant, and Kevon Seymour of Muir will also be attending.
“I want to major in business finance at whatever school I choose to go to,” said Treggs. “I am really interested in Cal, Stanford, and Notre Dame right now. Notre Dame is really the only school on the east coast that I really, really like.”
At 5'11 and 170 pounds, Treggs may seem ideally suited to play a slot receiver on the college level, but he has a skill set that allows him to excel outside as well. Treggs has great hands and can snag the ball from up in the air or dive for it low to the ground. He can take most players in one on one battles and runs clean, polished routes. Treggs goes hard every single play whether the ball is meant for him or not [3].
Strengths: Treggs plays with such smoothness and ease to his game, runs great routes, is fast off the line and even though everyone knows he's the top player at St. John Bosco, he seems to always find a way to get open. When he doesn't get open he usually still makes the catch even with cornerbacks draped all over him.
Weaknesses: It hasn't been a hindrance yet but Treggs will need to gain some muscle mass to be an elite receiver in college. His speed and smoothness are great qualities but he needs some bulk to absorb all the punishing hits on the next level [4].

Eddie Goldman, DT Friendship Academy (Washington, DC) Florida, Florida State, Miami, South Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Clemson, Maryland, Virginia, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Cal, LSU, Oklahoma as his top 15 [1][2].
Eddie Goldman (Washington, D.C/Friendship Collegiate Academy) is the nation's No. 2-rated prospect and the top defensive tackle. Just this week, he cut his school list to 15 Miami, Florida, FSU, South Carolina, North Carolina, NC State, Clemson, Maryland, Virginia, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Cal, LSU and Oklahoma.
"For me, it's been a positive hectic," said his father, Eddie Muhammad. "I don't mind it because I am a football junkie. It's surreal to me because I am talking with coaches that I have watched play. It's been overwhelming at times. I enjoy it, but Eddie just wants to keep his head down and work hard and play. He wants to help his team get better. Even with the magnitude that he's under he tries to fly under the radar. He doesn't want the spotlight."
Goldman has seen quite a few schools already. He has made unofficial visits to Miami, Georgia, Clemson, NC State, UNC, Maryland, Auburn, Alabama, Florida and FSU.
"He wants to get out and get around," Muhammad said. "He wants to get out west and see Cal and I know he would like to get down to Coral Gables again. When he was there it was under the Shannon regime. Right now he doesn't have any visits planned but I know Miami, Cal and Virginia could be his first visits."
In the end, it's going to be a huge recruiting battle for this 6-4, 310-pound defensive tackle.
"It's going to be a process," Muhammad said. "He will look at the coaching styles of the defensive coordinators and defensive line coaches. He wants to be in tune with the environment to make sure it fits his personality. Of course academics will be a key because they have to enhance him as a young man. He wants to be a productive person in society and a premium football player. Of course style and scheme will be important. Eddie will be looking for that balance [3]."

Zach Kline, QB (CAL) San Ramon Valley (Danville, CA) & Bart Houston of De La Salle will face off in the EBAL this season as two of the nation's top QB recruits [1]. Kline's stock continues to rise after Stanford NFTC. He's recruiting a trio of WRs: Jordan Payton of Oaks Christian, Malik Gilmore of Lakewood, and Bryce Treggs of St. John Bosco [video: 2].
Future Bear Kline started a little slowly in the first few minutes but quickly picked up the pace, clearly flourishing under the guidance of qb coaches Trent Dilfer and Yogi Roth.
"Just giving 100% focus on every throw is what I learned," said Kline. "In the beginning of camp, I wasn't playing my best and I wasn't focused enough and Coach Dilfer started getting on me. He's a Coach Tedford protoge. He just kept telling me, 'You're better than that.' And from then on, throughout the camp, I had 100% focus on every single throw [3]."
Strengths: Kline has all the tools to be an elite quarterback. His arm strength is fantastic, he spins the ball well, has great timing on his throws and his presence on the field is also impressive. Kline can work with any receiver and always looks comfortable in the pocket or rolling out and throwing on the run.
Weaknesses: Kline has shown the ability to fire the ball anywhere but how well can he put touch on passes? He slightly overthrew some passes early on during the workout especially ones where he had to put some loft on the ball.
Conclusion: By National Signing Day, Kline could be in contention for the No. 1 quarterback spot in the 2012 class. He has that much ability on the field plus camp counselor Trent Dilfer said he has all the intangibles to lead a team and that's what makes Kline extra special [$4].
Kline has really blossomed into one of the elite quarterbacks nationally, already holding a strong and accurate arm, but really improving in the other facets of the position- footwork, decision making and touch. Kline also has a pretty magnetic personality and was overheard recruiting guys to Cal, where he's commited. Receivers were cutting line and letting others go ahead, so they could do 1-on-1's with Kline.
The debate for California's top quarterback could boil down to the debate for the East Bay Athletic League's top passer, with Kline and fellow EBAL quarterback Bart Houston from Concord (Calif.) De La Salle, both the clear top two quarterbacks in the Golden State. While Kline had a better weekend with the Nike Camp and Elite 11, Houston wasn't that much farther behind him. For Houston, he plays in a run-oriented offense, so in a camp setting, he gets to throw the ball a lot more than he normally does for the Spartans, and you get to see a very good, strong and accurate arm. Houston is a little more reserved than Kline, but he too was making recruiting pitches for Wisconsin, where he verbaled to earlier this month [$5].

Zach Kline, QB (CAL) San Ramon Valley (Danville, CA) is playing at the Under Armour All-American Game instead of the US Army All-American Bowl due to a family conflict [1]. Kline will enroll early in Spring 2012 [2][3]. He is recruiting TE Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick to join him @ Cal [$4].
Kline's arm strength impressed recruitniks at Elite 11 QB camp @ Stanford on Friday [5][6]. He went to Nike Football Training Camp (NFTC) @ Stanford again on Sunday and earned rave reviews that included the QB MVP honor [7]. Kline's outstanding weekend performance earned him an invitation to Elite 11 Finals camp in Los Angeles [8].There was a buzz about Kline prior to the camp among the observers and he did not disappoint. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder has a cannon for an arm and was accurate in most of the passing drills during the event. Kline also has good footwork and is overall consistent. Kline, the nation’s fourth-ranked pro-style quarterback prospect, is committed to California and has a bright future ahead of him if he continues to develop [9].
Kline, the quarterback MVP, was another that was impressive Friday and Sunday. He has such a big arm and great velocity on his throws, but the thing that stood out on Sunday was that he was also very accurate throwing all of the passes he needed to. His footwork is good, fundamentals are there- he’s a complete quarterback. But it’s his God-given ability to throw the football well that gives him a bright future. Kline is the nation’s No. 4 pro-style quarterback prospect [10].
Arguably the top QB prospect in California, Kline was as advertised and had a polished overall showing. He lacks ideal size but stays balanced as a passer, has a quick release and can really get some RPMs and spin on his ball to fit it into tight spots. While he needs to avoid pushing it at times, he showed the ability to take something off his underneath passes, add touch and lead receivers downfield when needed. The Cal commit also threw some of the better intermediate-to-deep balls at the camp, exhibiting great arm strength, timing and accuracy [11].
"From the moment I stepped out on the field today, I felt good, like I was in the zone," Kline said. "I used this camp as a measuring stick, to see where I'm at, and honestly, I feel like I'm in a good place right now. Everything is falling into place for me."
"I'm solid with my decision to go to Cal, I'm happy with my choice and excited about the future," Kline said. "I like Berkeley, that's the place for me to be [12]."

Zach Kline, QB (CAL) San Ramon Valley (Danville, CA) is #40 on Rivals 100.
Michael Barton, LB De La Salle (Concord, CA) verbally committed to Cal [1].
"I was always interested in Cal, and when they offered I started developing a really good relationship with Coach Thompson, Coach Pendergast and Coach Lupoi," said Barton, who has excellent speed and expects to play linebacker at Cal. "It's a big family circle because Coach (Mike) Blasquez is the strength and conditioning coach there, and he started at De La Salle."
"It's great because now I can definitely focus on the team and my brothers," Barton said. "Now we can really dial in and getready for this upcoming season, because it's not going to be easy [2]."
"Cal has been high on my list for awhile now and I love the direction the program is going in," Barton said. "I knew I wanted to commit early and of all the schools I was looking at, Cal had the best combination of athletics and academics and it was where I felt most comfortable.
"Coach [Tosh] Lupoi and the defensive coordinator, Coach [Clancy] Pendergast, came to my school on Friday and I decided I wanted to commit to them in person and just end the process right there. They like me as an inside backer at the will position in their 3-4 and I think that fits me real well. They have had some other players similar in size to me play that position and I'm excited about being a Bear right now [$3]."

Kevon Seymour, CB Muir (Pasadena, CA) offered by Cal [1].
Kenny Walker, ATH Kennedy (Richmond, CA) offered by Cal [2][3]. Walker is projected by Boise State as RB [4].
Seth Jacobs, OLB Arroyo Grande (Arroyo Grande, CA) offered by Cal [5][6].
It is hard to classify Jacobs as one player, because he has the statistics of 6. He tackles like a linebacker, plays the ball like a defensive back, and can score in every way imaginable. "My versatility definitely helps me as a football player," Jacobs said. "I think of myself as an athlete first, and you know when I was younger, everyone played every position. As an 8th grader, my goal was to start on varsity as a freshmen, and I knew that I'd have to be able to contribute in a lot of different ways. Now that I've established myself as a good athlete, I know that the more ways I can help the team the more success we're going to have [7]."

Golden Recruits 2012: Early Targets before Summer Camps

CGB's 2012 Golden Recruiting coverage began w/ seasoned reporters/bloggers' observations into Zach Kline (I, II), Shaq Thompson, Bryce Treggs, Freddie Tagaloa, Gavin Andrews, and Hardy Nickerson Jr. It's time we get to know more national recruits Cal is targeting for 2012 before summer camps begin.
My list is in no way comprehensive. Coaches should be hitting the recruiting trail following the conclusion of spring practice. Feel free to discuss other prominent recruits in the comments section.
2010 and 2011 were great recruiting classes for Cal. 2012 could be even bigger for Tedford & Co [1].

Golden Recruit 2012 Q&A: Linebacker Hardy Nickerson Jr in the Eyes of Ben Enos, Reporter of Contra Costa TImes
via rise.espn.go.com
Hardy Nickerson Jr., LB
Bishop O'Dowd Dragons
Oakland, CA
6-0/218
Notes: Hardy Nickerson Jr is a speedy linebacker prospect from Bay Area's very own Bishop O'Dowd. His father Hardy Sr should require no introduction to Cal fans (video link - where did the nickname the Dragon come from?). Similar to other aforementioned Golden Recruits, Hardy Jr. earned Cal-Hi Sports/ESPN RISE's 1st-Team CA All-State Underclassmen selection [1]. The emphasis on academics is strong in the Nickerson household as Hardy Jr made Bishop O'Dowd's All-Academic Team.
Ben Enos, Reporter of Contra Costa Times, once again answered CGB's questions regarding Hardy Jr. If you haven't done so, make sure you follow Ben @ East Bay Prep Corner and Twitter if you want to learn more about Hardy Jr and the East Bay high school sports scene.

Golden Recruits 2012: Offensive Tackle Gavin Andrews in the Eyes of Joe Davidson, Sports Reporter of the Sacramento Bee
via media.sacbee.com
Gavin Andrews, OT
Granite Bay Grizzlies
Granite Bay, CA
6-5, 320
Outside of the football field, Gavin Andrews is a championship super heavyweight wrestler at 285lbs [1]. This spring Gavin earned a spot on SacBee's All-Sierra Foothill League wrestling team [2]. Unfortunately for Gavin, he lost at CIF Sacramento-San Joaquin Section Masters Final and did not make it to State or Nationals [3]. This might be Gavin's last attempt to dominate at wrestling. The weight loss needed from football to wrestling has taken a toll on him [4].
The trade-off Gavin is making from wrestling to football may benefit us Cal fans. He is a physically imposing left-tackle whose strength & quick feet has the coaches riveted. NorCal may very well boast three All-American offensive linemen candidates this year w/ Arik Armstead, Freddie Tagaloa [5], and Gavin [6].
Joe Davidson, sports reporter for the Sacramento Bee, was generous with his time once again to answer CGB's questions about Gavin. Thank you Joe and make sure you follow him @ SacBee, Preps Plus, and Twitter for his excellent storytelling.
Golden Recruit 2012 Q&A: Offensive Tackle Freddie Tagaloa in the Eyes of Ben Enos, Reporter of Contra Costa TImes
via l.yimg.com
Freddie Tagaloa, OT
Salesian Pride
Richmond, CA
Notes: Tagaloa (6-8, 318) is a massive offensive tackle prospect who was already 6 feet tall in 5th grade. Freddie is a legitimate NFL-caliber prospect even before entering his senior season of high school football at Salesian. When Freddie is not dominating defensive linemen on the gridiron, he spends his time dunking over opponents on the basketball court. Behind Freddie's strong post play and rebounding efforts, the Salesian Pride nearly won the CIF Division IV Championship in 2011, losing to LA's Windward 57-63 [1].
Ben Enos, Reporter of Contra Costa Times, spent some time w/ CGB to answer questions regarding Freddie. Be sure to follow Ben @ East Bay Prep Corner and Twitter if you want to learn more about East Bay Prep Sports scene.
Golden Recruits 2012 Q&A: Wide Receiver Bryce Treggs in the Eyes of Eric Sondheimer, Reporter of Los Angeles Times
via media.scout.com
Bryce Treggs, WR
St John Bosco Braves
Bellflower, CA
Notes: Cali High ranks Bryce #4 in the top 15 Class of 2012 Players [1]. Father is former Golden Bears wideout Brian Treggs who is also the Wide Receivers coach for the St John Bosco Braves. Bryce visited Cal unofficially last year for Cal-UCLA. He came to see Cal again for Elite Junior Day but has also unofficially visited UCLA and Stanford.
"I’ve always had my eye on Notre Dame," Treggs said. "Because of the tradition basically. Everybody knows about them, so it was good to get the offer. I plan to go to South Bend for the Blue-Gold Game on April 16, so I am looking forward to getting out there then."
Fighting Irish assistant Mike Demrock is recruiting Treggs for Notre Dame.
"He’s a great guy," Treggs said. "He constantly e-mails me. We have good conversations."
This past weekend, Treggs visited California for the Golden Bears junior day. His father Brian Treggs played for Cal from 1988-91 and was a record-setting receiver there.
"It’s Cal," Treggs said. "My dad played there. So it’s good. It feels like I am going back home [2]."
The competition is heavy for one of the best recruits in the Golden State. Eric Sondheimer, Reporter of LA Times on High School Sports, has kindly taken his time to answer CGB's questions about Bryce. Make sure you follow Eric @ LA Times Preps, Varsity Times Insider, and Twitter for future coverage on Bryce.
What are Freddie Tagaloa’s strengths as a player on the football field?
Freddie is the prototypical left tackle. A player of Freddie’s caliber doesn’t come around very often. Of course we said the same thing when Jahvid Best played for the Pride. A player like Jahvid won’t come around again as Cal and the Detroit Lions found out, but here’s Freddie again as a left tackle w/ impressive size and technique. He projects very well on the offensive line as a left tackle at the next level.

How would you compare Shaq's skill set with that of his brother Syd?
I think the world of Syd and he’ll frown when he reads this, but Shaq will love it and say, "All true!" Syd was a national recruit because of his speed, skills, desire. Shaq is a national recruit and he’s taller, faster, stronger than his brother and idol. Not sure Syd could guard Shaq if Shaq was a receiver and it was 4th and 10, last play. Be fun to watch. Of course, Syd will tell you he’d lock kid brother up.
