Umpires: Omnipotence & Imperfect Panoptic Vision
[GAME: 4/25/2007, Mariners @ A's]
Wretched umpires. Inflated egos. Heartless (as they should be). But (at least immediately) unaccountable. Unaccountable to fans. Unaccountable to teams. Unaccountable to facts. Unaccountable to themselves. A tyrannical secret-society, all-powerful, all-controlling, never-seeing. Rare appeals, rare reconsiderations, no thought, knee-jerk reactions. Usually right but habitually wrong. A failed panoptical system. Trust it no longer.
It is the bottom of the ninth.
A Tragic Easter Sunday at Anaheim Stadium
[GAME: 4/8/2007, A's @ Angels]
Any encounter between the A’s and the Angels is a tragic one. Especially in Anaheim.
More depressing and bizarre than the gameplay, however, is the tragic theatre of Angels fans and their children on Easter Sunday. The hideous way these fans-in-process are socialized is truly remarkable.
Families with too many children and too much money. Baseball games are not children’s affairs after the third inning. Ask any of these parents. The A’s lead 1-0 at the beginning of the 4th.
