Jonathan Mayo Draft Chat
Some pretty good Braves insight by Mayo here. He answered my question about Kaleb Cowart (thanks!), and made a pretty good point about the unwillingness to spend first round money @ pick 35, especially since we don't get it back if we fail to sign the pick. Still, I think he'd be a great upside play if Cowart does indeed fall to us.
Talking Chop Round 3 Draft
Well, we just had the TC Fantasy Ball draft last night, and I was wondering how everyone thinks of their draft.
Last year I was pretty happy with my team (which won! to toot my own horn a bit). Granted, I drafted Chris Davis in the 5th and Ervin Santana as my #1 starter, but I was able to come through with an outstanding outfield and pickups like JA Happ, Scott Downs, DeRosa post-injury, and Jose Lopez (after Davis was sent down) to help pull me through.
So without further ado, here's what I ended up with:
C - Kurt Suzuki
1B - Kendry Morales
2B - Ian Kinsler
3B - Ian Stewart (2B, 3B)
SS - Elvis Andrus
OF - Matt Kemp
OF - Curtis Granderson
OF - Nick Markakis
Util - Billy Butler (1B)
BN: Julio Borbon (OF), Chris Davis (1B, 3B)
I'm decently happy here, but nothing I'm estatic with like last year's OF. I think I have a pretty strong one this year, but I'm concerned about Granderson and don't feel that he holds the 5th round value that I used on him. He also doesn't really provide anything over what I have in Kemp (and to a lesser extent, Markakis). I would've been better served to pick up a Carlos Lee type who went after him who's more of a HR/RBI guy than an all around (except avg) guy. I'm really happy with the value that I got in Borbon (16th round), and will make up for Granderson if he's facing LHers or Markakis if he doesn't perform like I think he will.
I'm content with my infield, especially Morales and Kinsler. I wish I would've gotten Napoli in the 10th round (*shakes fist*). I'm also not thrilled about Andrus but Stephen Drew was taken far sooner than I though he would be and I reached a bit to fill the spot. However, I do like his steals potential and runs potential on that Tex lineup. My 3B situation isn't ideal, but I think I can get enough effort out of Stewart and Chris Davis (the human air conditioner himself) to fulfill the position, as I was underwhelmed overall at the 3B options outside of ARod, Longoria, and Wright.
SP - Chris Carpenter
SP - Ubaldo Jimenez
SP - Chad Billingsley
RP - Billy Wagner
RP - Brad Lidge
P - Jered Weaver
P - John Danks
P - Johnny Cueto
P - Bronson Arroyo
BN - Paul Maholm
BN - Ervin Santana
BN - Scott Downs
BN - Daniel McCutchen
Not terrible here. I really wanted Kershaw or Tommy Hanson at #2, but went 3&2 picks respectively ahead of my pick, so I had to "settle" for Ubaldo. I do think that Billingsley will have a bounce back year and was good value in the 9th. My relievers are a bit suspect, and all my pitchers have that injury annoyance about them. I like Downs actually to steal the closer role so he can step up if/when Lidge sucks. Or I could just vacuum someone up off the waiver wire. The back end of my rotation is pretty weak, but Cueto could provide pretty good value in the 17th round.
Oh, and Heyward went in the 4th...this is madness!!
Other than Heyward, I'm not knowledgeable enough to call a reach of the draft...but I think Bumgarner in the 17th was a tad too agressive.
The steal of the draft was probably Johan Santana and Cliff Lee in the 7th (which coincidently started the run on starters where Santana, Kershaw, Hanson, Jimenez, Wandy, Beckett, Lee, and Jurrjens all went almost consecutively).
So what does everyone else think of their draft?
