Just a PSA, if anyone wants to make a last minute trip to Boston tomorrow night, BC's official site, bceagles.com, is selling $5 tickets if you use the promo code VACATION. There are no bad seats in Conte Forum. Even the view from top of the "upper deck" where these $5 tix are is comparable to the view from the suites in section 113 or 115 at Comcast.

BC gets Baylor in the opening round, followed by either Colorado or Dayton in game 2.

Fun draw for sure with an early test against a Top 25 team, led by Donahue reject Brady Heslip. Then a game against either a weaker power conference team or a top mid-major.

I graduated from UMD last year and now live in Boston. I’ve sat front-row center for all but 3 of BC’s home games this year and have watched all the road games on TV so I’m very familiar with the team. Figured I’d post some insights in advance of the game tomorrow.

BC is in their 2nd season under Steve Donahue, but this is an entirely different team from the one that beat the Terps twice last year. The team features 9 freshmen, and a junior transfer. They bring back only 3 players that saw any real minutes last year, and their leading returning scorer averaged just 3 ppg and doesn’t actually play more than 4 or 5 mpg this year. BC starts 4 freshmen and the transfer, with a sophomore, 2 freshmen, and 2 grad students getting the bench minutes.

BC’s likes to play a slow half-court offense that revolves around throwing the ball around the perimeter and hoping they find an open guy to take a 3. If the clock gets down around 10 and they don’t have anything yet they’ll try to throw it inside to a big man, who will try to score in the paint 1-on-1. They almost never kick back out once they throw it inside, and they’re not usually too aggressive on the offense glass, instead opting to run back on D and try to prevent fast-breaks (they’re very good at this). The D is a standard man-to-man, although they will switch to a 2-3 zone on rare occasions. They’ll also try to pressure from time to time, usually mid-to-late 2nd half. The man defense is pretty tight, with good rotation and they’re actually a solid defensive team most of the time. They’ve had trouble playing a full 40 minutes this year, lots of times turning in great 35 min performances, but they may have gotten that monkey off their back in the FSU game. Here’s a look at some of the individual players.

STARTERS

Jordan Daniels (freshman): 5’9 PG. Jordan is a good ball handler, and good on-ball defender who comes up with a number of steals. His passes are usually on-target and crisp although he can sometimes make poor mental decisions and ill-advised (read: cross court through a zone) passes. He’s quick and can get into the lane although he doesn’t really shot fake and can get blocked pretty easily inside. He’s not the most consistent 3-pt threat on the team (that would be Jackson) but he hits a very good percentage and has the best range by far. He can hit from 28 ft. at about the same percentage he hits from 23 ft. He can also play a full 40 minutes. Good free-throw shooter but has a tendency to miss clutch ones and front-ends.

Lonnie Jackson (freshman) : 6’4 SG: Lonnie is pretty much Eric Hayes without the bball IQ. He’s the most accurate 3-pt threat on the Eagles. He can’t really create his own shot, but he doesn’t need much space to get one off. He started the season shooting about 40% from the FT-line in non-conference play and is probably around 80% in conference. Good perimeter defender but poor lateral quickness. Gets fouled a lot on his 3s and has converted multiple 4-pt plays. Scores most of his points in the 2nd half for whatever reason.

Matt Humphrey (junior): 6’6 SG/SF: Matt is in his 1st year at BC after sitting out a year, coming from Oregon. A former 4-star. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. He started the year as a highly overconfident volume shooter who felt that he had to carry the team. When he gets 1-on-1 coverage on the perimeter he’ll take a lot of 3 or 4 dribble pull-up 3s. He’s also left-handed. Sound familiar yet? Anyway, Matt has really calmed down lately and become much more of a team-player which is something he wasn’t early in the year. He’s become what we’re all wishing Stogs could be, which is a scorer when he needs to be, and a perfect offensive cog the rest of the time. He’s a hard-nosed, hard-working player who seems to be everywhere on the floor. He’s a Mosely-esque lock-down defender, the best one that BC has, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they put him on Stoglin. He can also slash into the lane and get to the basket as well, but isn’t much of a mid-range shooter. He’s the only 3-pt threat that can create his own shot.

Ryan Anderson (freshman): 6’8 PF: Last year’s Gatorade Player of the Year in California. Ryan is very athletic, and is the best rebounder on the team. His offensive game is a little unpolished, but he is quick and can play in the paint or on the perimeter. His 3-pt shot isn’t as good as the guards, but it exists. He’s streaky and can take over a game or be a complete non-factor depending on the day. Tendency to get into foul trouble.

Dennis Clifford (freshman): 7’0 C. Well developed post game. Likes to shoot hook shot ala Mason Plumlee. Very thin and gets pushed around. Not a great rebounder for his size. Average shot blocker. Will take a mid-range shot or 2, or maybe even a 3 if he’s open. Get’s to the line a decent amount and shoots around 65-70%. Was a consistent double-double early in conference play but has disappeared the last couple games. Should be interesting to see him match-up with Len. Another guy who plays all out and isn’t afraid to dive for loose balls. Gets his shot blocked waaay to often considering his height. Not a good jumper.

BENCH

KC Caudil (freshman) 6’10 C: Good rebounder, okay post game. Likes to back down his guy and then spin and take a fade-away, whereas Clifford likes the hook shot. The fade is Caudil’s shot and he’s pretty good at it. Decent mid-range shooter as well. Terrible from the line. Incredibly slow. I mean incredibly slow in all areas.

Eddie Odio (freshman) 6’7 PF: Probably the best jumper on the team and maybe a better rebounder than Anderson. Highly athletic. Can’t really do much else tough.

Gabe Moton (sophomore) 6’2 PG: Unremarkable. Can hit open shots. Can defend okay. Decent passer. Turnover prone. Below average court vision.

John Cahill (senior) 6’0 SG: Very high bball IQ. Unathletic. Deadly 3-pt shooter but only if he’s wide open. And I mean wide wide open. Wont shoot unless there’s absolutely nobody near him. Plays 15 min a game and may only take 1 shot.

Dirunas Visosckas (senior) 6’7 SF: I spelled his name wrong I’m sure. He’s only played in 2 games so far after being injured and hasn’t actually done anything, but he’s played decent minutes and the Eagles always seem to go on a run when he’s in the game. Not that he ever has anything to do with it, but his +/- is through the roof.

Ok, this is off-topic and has nothing to do with BC sports but I thought I'd share. I didn't go to BC for undergrad (didn't even apply) but I've always been a BC sports fan and now I've got the option to go there for law school. Of course, I've also gotten into Maryland, which is where I did go to undergrad, so we'll see. Little ACC competition there.

[Ed. note -- Front Page'd]

Now that we’re a third of the way through the season we can start to take a look at how this team has progressed and what the expectations are moving forward both this year, and in coming years. First of all, I’m happy with the improvement I’ve seen from this team so far. Last night was the first game this year where I didn’t notice a marked improvement over the previous game. They are relying on each other and learning to play more as a team, which is in turn making up for a lot of their individual deficiencies. The whole is going to need to be greater than the sum of its parts with this group. There are no stars on this team.

A couple of the players who have made huge strides the last couple games are Gabe Moton and (never thought I’d say this one) Matt Humphrey. Humphrey seems to have really bought in to the team mentality and is working at becoming a better cog in the offense than he has been previously. He isn’t rushing shots and he’s looking to dish unless he knows he has a high percentage opportunity. He’s also one of the better players at running ball screens, whereas a few too many guys (Cahill, Heckman, Rubin) seem content to just stand there and wait for a play to develop, Humphrey is looking to position himself. As for Moton, he hasn’t changed his game all that much with the exception of relaxing on his impulses to push too hard in transition, but he’s executing much better than he was early in the year. You can chalk that up to experience, mental focus, or a number of other factors. Not having him last night hurt (although Daniels having a very good game helped a lot) and hopefully he’s back soon.

One of the bright spots of the first couple games, Patrick Heckman, seems to have fallen back to Earth. A lot of this probably has to do with him still nursing 2 sore ankles. He was very adept at driving the lane and getting to the line. His moves relied on his ability to pivot and spin quickly, and that’s certainly been difficult for him, and you haven’t seen him try making the types of plays he made against New Hampshire or Saint Louis. Once he’s truly healthy I still think that he’ll mature into one of the best wings in the ACC.

As for the bigs, Caudill and Clifford still continue to be projects with high ceilings. Caudill is still slow, and Clifford is still weak. Both bring a lot of unteachable attributes to the table, but both have weaknesses that overshadow them. Neither one has solidified themselves as an aggressive rebounder yet, and BC is giving up an insane amount of offensive boards that they should be coming down with. Clifford also has trouble protecting the ball around the rim when he goes up for a dunk. He gets blocked in the paint at least once a game, usually more, which for a 7 footer is just unacceptable. He either needs to get stronger or do a better job of hiding the basketball on his way up. Shot fakes are also acceptable here. This is really more a question of technique than strength. Strength is what’s keeping him from rebounding the ball as he gets pushed out of the way easily. He shows great effort though, isn’t afraid to get on the floor, and his a nice mid-range jumper. Additionally, there are maybe only a dozen or so 7-footers in the country who shoot as well as he does from the stripe. That’s absolutely huge. As for Caudill, he’s very very slow. Only knock on his game that I have, but it’s a killer. Keeps him from kicking the ball out to open men, keeps him from snagging rebounds, keeps him from being able to guard a player with good post moves, keeps him from getting the block/charge calls on both ends, I could go on. I’m a little worried about this one because I don’t know if it’s necessarily correctable.

[Ed. note -- Front Page'd]

I’m a little worried about this one because I don’t know if it’s necessarily correctable.

Looking at the team as a whole, these guys will be lucky to win two ACC games this year. I’d honestly settle for just getting 1. Next year will be marginally better. I think the ceiling for these guys is probably #4 or 5 in the ACC as seniors. This squad is never going to challenge for an ACC championship which is a problem when you rebuild your entire team. The goal of a rebuild should be to build a foundation for a team that can challenge for a league championship and this foundation can’t. They just aren’t talented enough. It will take another gutting of the team and another full rebuild to make that possible.

And I know it’s not Donahue’s style, but it will be a heck of a lot easier with higher ranked players. Sure it’s possible to build a winner with underrecruited guys and plenty of teams do it every year. But the trick is that none do it consistently. Butler had 2 great years, VCU had a great year, Harvard is having a great year. Before that it was Southern Illinois or George Mason. Creighton has a good team now, and Cornell had one under Donahue. But none of those schools, or any other mid-major that has had those "diamond in the rough" guys has been able to maintain success. The only schools that maintain success are schools that bring in highly ranked players on a consistent basis. Anyone can get lucky with unheralded guys, but for every school that does, there are 50 mid-majors you’ve never heard of because their unheralded guys suck. This translates in the ACC too. Maryland won a national championship with no McDonalds All-Americans in 2002 and has only pulled a handful of top 50 guys since. And they haven’t been able to duplicate their success. It will be a challenge but BC needs to recruit in that 40-100 range and pull 1 or 2 guys from that pool every year. They at least have to lockdown a foothold in northern New England and I don’t mean by landing guys like Clifford from schools like Bridgewater. I mean by landing guys from the prep schools.

I know I went off on a tangent there but those are my thoughts on the program and where it stands and where it’s going. I really like the guys on the current squad. They seem to have a very good mentality and they’re focused on getting better and winning games. I wish them the best, but I remain skeptical of the program’s ceiling.

I graduated in May, and I've got tomorrow off of work for Veterans Day, so I'm heading down to CP for the Notre Dame game. Figured I'd see a bunch of my friends who're still there and go to the game with everybody. Problem is, none of my friends are going. Apparently they feel that the team isn't worth seeing right now, especially when they have to travel to Landover and pay $60 a ticket (although I found $20 tickets and they still turned them down, then I offered to pay for someone's ticket and got no takers). I'm talking about people who last year were good fans and went to every game (and have gone to most games this year). I'm not talking about one group of people either, I'm talking about at least 3 different groups of students who independently decided they're not going.

Are any students going to this? I have a lot of friends (I know, that's the lamest thing I could ever post on the internet) and NONE of the ones I've talked to are planning on going.

Also, does anyone know if DOTS is providing any buses or anything from campus?

I didn’t see a write up on Ice Jam anywhere so I figured I’d make one. The place was fuller than I’d have expected with about 2/3 of the donor seats on each sideline being occupied. It was almost entirely students and I think the “snow” probably kept any members of the general populace away. If even half of those students show up to bball games we’d have an amazing atmosphere. Unfortunately many seemed disinterested most of the night and a large number left early.

The program got underway with opening remarks from Steve Levy and a welcome video from some former Eagles (the students sitting behind me were like “I bet they’ll have Doug Flutie or Mark Herzlich or BJ Raji” and then when Craig Smith popped up they were like “who?” and one of them asked if he was a hockey player). The audio feed from the jumbotron was awful all night, the live microphones seemed to work pretty well, but it was hard to hear any of the pre-recorded segments.

Women’s bball intros followed and then women’s hockey. Each team preceded its intro with a short video skit up on the jumbotron. IMO women’s hockey had the best skit of the night, and it seemed like most of the crowd felt the same way. Hopefully BC posts the skits online somewhere. Men’s bball came out next joined by a freestyling dancer from America’s Got Talent (missed his name, don’t watch the show) disguised as a member of the team. The dancer performed an exceptionally exciting routine. Men’s hockey came out next, but when the team was announced a youth team in full BC jerseys and pads skated out. A comedic routine involving Steve Levy interviewing members of the youth team followed and then the real team was introduced. There was a brief scrimmage between the real team and the 8-year olds.

Next up women’s bball had a dance off against a BC dance group, and then women’s hockey did a choreographed dance on ice set to Party Rock. This was followed up by a hockey skills challenge where 2 men’s and 2 women’s players attempted to hit 4 targets set up in the 4 corners of the goal in the fastest time. Bball then had their 3-point contest with 2 men’s players, 2 women’s players, and a student. Danny Rubin won, despite not getting through the entire final rack of balls before time expired. Then there was a “minute-to-win-it” contest involving throwing ping pong balls off of the backboard being worn by an athlete into a small bucket. Four athletes (1 from each team) teamed with four students. Then there was a fifth team of Father MacMillan and another Father (an Australian, forget his name). Costume contest followed this, and then a raffle winner had a chance to shoot a shot from center ice into a small slit in the goal to win $50,000 tuition. He missed by only a couple inches and the crowd screamed for him to get one more shot. They decided to give him 1 more shot for $1,000 and he missed badly this time. This concluded the night.

I thought it was a very well-run event. There are only two things I thought were missing. First, is that NONE of the coaching staffs or head coaches were introduced. I thought that was kind of silly. Steve Donahue sat in a corner in a track jacket the whole night, he was never even on the floor. The coach is the only marketable member of any team in the NCAA. You can’t sell the individual players but you can sell the coach, and you’ve gotta play them up. If you’re not gonna let the coach make a few remarks or something at least introduce them with the rest of their team. The coaches didn’t even get to walk out during team intros. Nothing.

Second change (and I know this is hard since Conte is split half court half ice) would be to find a way to do some type of scrimmage. Every midnight madness everywhere else in the country involves the first scrimmage of the year for the bball teams, a chance to see the new players in action, and to see the rest of the team for the first time all year. That’s something that was conspicuously missing here (not as big a deal for hockey cause they’ve been playing for several weeks but big for bball). I know I tend to bring this up in every post I make, but I went to Maryland and the biggest draws at midnight madness there are the first bball scrimmage of the year, and the alumni game which this year featured most of the 2002 national championship team. Kentucky ran an alumni game this year that featured UK alums vs. what they called villains (Christian Lattener and others who have famously burned Kentucky in the past). This kind of thing does wonders for recruiting. These events are when you sell recruits on your tradition and your atmosphere and I’m not even sure there were any recruits in the house last night.

Anyway, those are my thoughts and I cant wait for bball season to kick off. Other random thought is I got to meet the Donahue’s Disciples guys and they seem like very cool dudes. Really have the right ideas about how to get the student section going.

Good to see BC securing a local (New England) commit. I've been something for months that this is the most important thing for the program, establishing a local pipeline instead of relying on California. IIRC Hanlan was one of the biggest targets left on Donahue's 2012 board and it's very nice to have this squared away before the year starts.

According to Rivals, we haven't had a top 40 recruit since Mike Jones in 2003. I know that on some other services we have but on Rivals we haven't (Faust is #48 and Cleare is #44). I got curious how many other schools haven't had a top 40 recruit since 2003, the answer is, not many.

The only BCS conference schools without a top 40 recruit in that time period (through the class of 2012 as they currentl stand) are:

BC and MD from the ACC

Texas Tech from the Big 12

Rutgers and USF from the Big East (Seton Hall never got a commitment from one, but had one transfer to them)

Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern, and Penn St from the Big 10

Cal, Colorado, Oregon St, and Washington St. from the Pac-12 (and Utah but they don't count)

South Carolina and Auburn from the SEC

Only 15 of the 83 teams in BCS conferences haven't landed a top 40 guy in that time and only us and Cal are the names that really stand out on that list. Additionally, 10 non BCS teams (Memphis, UNLV, Gonzaga, Houston, Central Michigan, College of Charleston, New Mexico, New Mexico St., Nevada, and La Salle) have landed top 40 guys (and Xavier landed a #41 guy).

I don't really have a point here, just a noteworthy stat. Hopefully Turge makes it happen this year with Jefferson

from Zags

DeMatha Catholic forward Jerami Grant is down to half a dozen schools and could pull the trigger any time now.

“I just got off the phone with his father, Harvey, and they want to make a decision here in the next week to 10 days,” DeMatha coach Mike Jones told SNY.tv. “He doesn’t want it to go past the first week of September.

Jones said Rutgers, Syracuse, Maryland, Virginia Tech, N.C. State and Oklahoma are in the mix, with Texas having “just” been removed.

Jones said the 6-foot-7 Grant is eyeing a pro career like his father and uncle Horace, and wants a college that can prepare him for that.

“He’s definitely got pro potential,” Jones said. “Wherever he decides to go, he wants a coaching staff that’s proven in preparing players for the next level. He needs to get stronger and tighten up his perimeter skills to be able to play after college, but that’s what he’s looking for now.”

Jones said Rutgers, where Grant recently visited, is “definitely in the mix.”

“He definitely knows coach [David] Cox there from his D.C. ties and he has a lot of great things to say about Coach [Mike] Rice,” Jones added. “They’re very much in the mix and if he decides to go there, it will be a great situation.”

Jones said Grant likely won’t take any more visits, except possibly locally to Maryland, before deciding.

“I don’t think he’s going anywhere at this point,” Jones said. “At this point it’s just him figuring out what he wants to do.”

There is no single move that Edsall could make that would alienate the casual fan more than not having names on the backs of jerseys. Like, I can't just start following a bunch of numbers around the field. I wanna know who these people are, and on a college football team, if you're not a die-hard, thats almost impossible without names on jerseys. I understand when a baseball team does it (you only have to know who the batter and pitcher are, really), or even a bball team (there's only 5 of em), but for a football team its just an idiotic idea, that will turn off a lot of people, myself included. I don't even like playing college sports video games because of the lack of names.

For a program so intent on needing to bring in new fans, I just don't understand this. I would bet at least 50-100 people don't buy season tickets because they get turned off that they can't follow the action because of no names.

Hey, sorry if this isn't the right place to post this but maybe one of you can help me out.

I'm from Newton, and just graduated Maryland, and now have moved back to Newton. I'm thinking of getting BC bball season tix for this year, but can't find any info on the website (I guess it doesn't go up until the schedule's out? Maryland's been selling bball season tix for months now).

Anyone, does anyone have a ballpark figure they can throw at me for about how much BC charges for the cheepest season tix? (like upper level). At UMD it's like $800 but I'm hoping that BC would be a little cheaper than that. I can't really go a whole winter without having college bball a couple times a week.

Cool idea from BC Interruption about loyalty points for season ticket holders. Not sure if MD has ever tried anything like this (or if it's feasible) but I thought it was a cool idea. Season ticket holders aren't gonna scan and leave so it's not like that's an issue here, and it's a good incentive to get people to actually show up to the non-conference games.

WMUC, (and by extension WMUC Sports) is in danger of being shut down after losing it's appeal last night for additional funding in front of the SGA. Due to a spike in the number of student groups on campus and the amount of funding they have requested there is a huge shortage of student activity fee money this year. Most student groups were only given about 25% of their requested funds for the year, and in this case that isn't nearly enough to keep WMUC on the air. This could be a major blow to Terp sports as WMUC Sports is pretty much the only place to hear live coverage of a bunch of the non-revenue sports.
