Howdy y’all,

Ok, so I got a little nostalgic today (I know, a weird feeling for a guy barely under 20 years old, but hear me out), and I started watching videos from the Spurs’ titles in ’99 and ’03. As I watched my boyhood icons like David Robinson, Sean Elliot, Avery Johnson, and Mario Elie lay the foundations for the Spurs’ dominance in the past decade, I was reminded again why I love this team.

Sometimes, it helps ease the pressure of waiting for big Spurs games by taking a step back and realizing why you even follow the Spurs in the first place. My earliest memories of the Silver and Black were from the ’93 NBA playoffs, when we were ousted by the suns of a different era. Even though I was only 4 ½ at the time, I vividly remember the look on the Admiral’s face as his last-second shot attempt was blocked and wondering, “why can’t my team win?” I remember the frustration of the Dennis Rodman era, of being so close, but lacking the chemistry to win in the postseason. I remember the pain of ’95; of having the best regular season in franchise history and still coming up short. That’s the first time I can really remember the playoff passion enveloping San Antonio that these days has become almost routine. It felt like we as a city were on the verge of something truly special, something that was never realized as the Dream schooled the Admiral in the low post, and villains by the names of Robert Horry and Mario Elie killed any hopes of greatness in the mid 90s, and left me with a feeling of numbness I couldn’t even explain at the time.

I remember the uncertainty of injuries to Robinson and Elliot, the shame of being lumped with the clippers, hawks, and celtics as among the least accomplished in the association. I remember as a kid my friends all wanting to be “like Mike,” while I filled my room with posters of Gervin, Robinson, Johnson, and Malik Rose. Then the great mystery to me that was the NBA draft lottery filled my ears with a new name around which to wrap my 10 year old tongue: Tim Duncan. I’d never heard of him (I never have been a big fan of college roundball), but once I saw his game and quiet, burning intensity, I was hooked. So while Jordan won his title with the ’98 Bulls, I was, perhaps naively, envisioning number 21 holding the Larry O’Brien trophy in a Spurs uniform.

I remember thinking I’d never see another NBA finals in the 90s. With the lockout threatening to shoot down an NBA season that had yet to even spread it’s wings, I remember praying my first sports-related prayer: that God would somehow allow the NBA to continue, so the Spurs would have a chance once again at a title. That’s all I asked for, a chance for my team. Even though it was only 50 games, I was so excited when the season finally began that I went out and bought my first Spurs pocket schedule. I still have that schedule to this day, and carry it around in my wallet to remind me of the childlike attachment I have to this team.

Even though we’d never won a title before, things just “felt right” in ’99. I remember listening to Spurs games on the radio turned way down low in my bedroom so my parents wouldn’t hear. Two games in particular from that season stick out in my mind. One was a Friday night away game against the suns. We usually had family night on Friday nights, but on this night, the game was so close down the stretch that the final moments were spent crowded around the radio (we didn’t—and still don’t—have cable) in a corner of the hallway at our old house in Universal City. I remember my heart pounding as Elie threw the inbounds pass to Elliot, the eternity that seemed to pass between the radio announcer’s words “shoots.....SCORES!” and the utter pandemonium in our little hallway, and going to bed happy about the flight of a ball two states away. The other game I remember was a Sunday afternoon game against the Houston Rockets, where Elie capped off a Spurs comeback with a last-second, game-winning 3. Little moments like that told me something had to be different these playoffs, just HAD to be.

My mom was selected to donate a kidney to her brother in ’99. Thing was, her bro lived in Michigan at the time. So, the entire family (of 7) at the time, packed up our 27-foot travel trailer and took off northward for the Wolverine state. Since we began traveling at the start of the ’99 playoffs, we caught what games we could at our stops along the way. I remember the Spurs winning game one against KG’s Twolves, then losing the second game. To this day, I remember sitting in the hospital looking a the picture in the Detroit newspaper of Mario grabbing his jersey and screaming in frustration. Then that pang of doubt that maybe, we just weren’t good enough because no Spurs team ever does well, regardless of seed.

Needless to say, both the operation and the rest of the series went well. We weren’t even back in the Alamo City before the Silver and Black had swept away the lake show (much to my dad’s chagrin, lol). The first full game I got to watch back in SA was the Memorial Day Miracle game. I remember even my friends (who’d become Spurs fans seemingly overnight) saying “It’s over,” when we went down by nearly 20 points in the 3rd quarter. Yet and still, I clung to some shred of hope, that some way the Spurs wouldn’t fold on the colorful Alamodome floor that easily. I remember Elie’s inbounds pass to Elliot nearly being stolen; remember Elliot seemingly falling out of bounds; remember thinking for a split second that Rasheed Wallace had somehow gotten a piece of the ball—and then I don’t remember anything but screaming, both from the TV and from my family in the living room.

The Finals were a blur for me....it was the only series from that year I don’t remember being worried. Maybe it was because I was a spoiled Dallas Cowboys fan. If the Cowboys had never lost a Super Bowl I’d watched live, then why should my Spurs be any different? Of course they came though, and I’ve never doubted them in the Finals since.

My love for the Silver and Black has only increased over time, as subsequent editions of the Spurs have demonstrated the same qualities that made me like them in the first place: professionalism, intensity, perseverance, and an undying commitment to excellence both on and off the court.

The memories are endless. Watching from overseas as the Spurs rolled over the lakers and sent Robinson and Kerr out on top in ’03, the near misses in ’04 and ’06, Timmy overcoming injury, Manu coming into his own, and Horry’s epic performance in ’05, Tony Parker finally maturing into a lethal weapon in last year’s Finals, and Timmy’s “Sunsetter” in SA in the first round of these playoffs. Indeed, it is good to be a Spurs fan.

I don’t know what’s going to happen Monday night. Maybe this team from louisiana will put an end to the Spurs’ bid for back-to-back titles. Maybe we’ll move on to bigger and better things against kobe’s lakers in the conference finals. We’ll know soon enough. Regardless of what happens, however, neither the hornets, nor any other NBA team on this earth, can take away from what the San Antonio Spurs have accomplished as a franchise. They can’t kill the indomitable spirit of longtime Spurs fans. That spirit will stay with us as surely as the San Antonio River winds through the heart of the city. No matter how glorified or vilified we are in the media, no matter how loudly opposing crowds boo, no matter how many times our method is slighted by the fickle, fair-weather “fans” of the league, never forget why you love this team. It’s more than the ball going through the hoop, it’s the exemplary way the Spurs have represented and will continue to represent the city of San Antonio.

Win, lose, or draw, the San Antonio Spurs will always be the Pride of the Great Lone Star State!

Now let’s kick some nawlins tail one more time!

Okay, y'all, this last weekend has been crazy. Saturday was Final Review for the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, and to break it down for those of y'all that don't know what I'm talking about, it's the unofficial graduation ceremony for Aggie cadets. Basically, we hold two parades, back to back. The first is the entire Corps, and that takes a little over an hour and a half to complete. The second is when all the underclassmen put on their rank for next year for the first time (i.e.: I'm a junior cadet next year, so I get to wear a white belt--as opposed to the black ones freshmen and sophomores wear--and a cross signifying my new position as a chaplain for my outfit next year). All in all, it lasts about 4 and a half hours, and with the humidity we had in College Station on Saturday, I was sweating like a pig. Sunday was the last day to move out of the dorms, and as I'm sure many of you know, that's a chore in and of itself. Anyway, the good thing is that I live about 20 minutes away from school, so I made it back to spend the rest of the day with my (larger than average) family. Seriously, I'm the oldest of 9 kids, so I practically needed earplugs to protect myself from the squealing when I walked in the door!

As some of y'all know, I'd vowed not to wear any Spurs paraphernalia on game nights in order to appease the playoff gods. So far, so good for game 3. However, I'd at least intended to watch game 4, since I'm a Spurs fan and all. Wouldn't you know it, my folks planned a night of fine dining for my mom's Mother's Day gift RIGHT AT GAME TIME! I was ticked, but what's a guy to do? I went and pretended to be interested in truffles and teacakes whilst my Spurs waged war with the invaders from louisiana not more than 2 and a half hours down the road. Needless to say, I was in basketball hell. When we made it home hours later, I set a speed record to the radio to learn the fate of the Silver and Black (we don't have cable TV at my house--peachy, just peachy!). When I heard we were up 20 in the 4th quarter, I think I smiled my first genuine smile of the day. THAT'S my SPURS right there!

Since game 4, I've been doing what every good Spurs fan does in the playoffs--prepare for and attempt to predict the next game. I've spent a lot of time observing the media in this series, and I couldn't help but notice the 180 a lot of analysts have done. Before the series began, the hornets were supposed to be in way over their heads against the defending champion Spurs. Then, after deceptively convincing routs at home, the hornets were supposed to be simply too athletic, talented, and hungry for the archaic Spurs to handle. Yet, after another mini-series of annihilations by the home team, many (though not all--see john hollinger's piece of blasphemy at espn.com) in the media are quick to jump back over to the defending champ's corner. No, I'm not gonna sit here and bash the media--that's pointless anyway and we all know that if they had their way, the Spurs would've been ousted by the suns in round one as some twisted example of poetic justice. I will however, comment on what momentum does to teams in the playoffs.

Momentum is a funny thing. I've seen it in the NFL (see: 2007 new york giants in the playoffs), MLB (see: the damn 2004 red sox beating the yanks), and NASCAR (Jimmie Johnson in the Chase for the Cup last year), just to cite a few instances. But momentum in the NBA playoffs is a different beast. It can swing slowly over the course of a couple of games, or it can shift withing the course of a single possession. The Spurs, in particular, have had both good and bad experience with momentum in the playoffs during the last decade. Let's look at the '03 and '04 seasons, respectively. In both years the Spurs faced the lakers in the 2nd round, and in both series, the Spurs took a 2-0 lead. But the lakers reversed that momentum so quickly in the next two games of both those series that it looked like SA's number was up and the lakers were simply too good to be outdueled in a 7 game series by the Spurs. Both game 5's appeared to be headed toward blowouts, with SA building a huge lead in '03 and the lakers storming out front in game '04. Both series featured furious comeback attempts and down to the wire finishes in game 5. But in '03, Robert Horry's missed shot spelled the end for the lake show, while derek fisher's prayer in '04 doomed the Spurs. The same happened to the Spurs in '05 against the pistons, with 4 consecutive blowout wins by the home teams produced a scintillating game 5 battle that shifted the momentum in the home team's favor for good.

As I prepare to watch game 5 tonight, the one thing that comforts me is the fact that THE SPURS HAVE BEEN HERE BEFORE. Even if the hornets triumph tonight, I have confidence that the Spurs will not panic, and will find a way to win games 6 and 7, because that's what champions do. The hornets' faithful, on the other hand, cannot possibly have this kind of confidence in their team. They're outrageously talented, and with the proper tutelage (and I'm NOT talking about byron scott), they could evolve into the next great force in the league. But they've not had to face the pressure they're gonna face tonight. Sure, they can assure themselves that things are different at home, and they'll probably come out like gangbusters in the first half. But in their hearts, they know the series has changed. They know the Spurs have figured out what they've been doing, and are sucking the life out of their game like cold-blooded vampires. Peja KNOWS there's no such thing as an uncontested shot anymore with Bruce covering him. cp3 KNOWS no matter how much he scores, TP is matching him practically point for point at the other end. The hornets KNOW that they are not long for this world when Bruce hits the corner three. The hornets KNOW if they can't stop an 80% Manu, they have no prayer against a healing Manu. Chandler even sacrificed himself to the proverbial dragon by volunteering to single-handedly guard Tim Duncan, even though he KNOWS a healthy TD cannot be stopped.

Deep down, no matter what history says, the hornets can sense the tide has changed. You can see it in their comments, in their body language, and in their eyes. The Spurs MUST recognize the fragile mental state of this inferior franchise and suffocate them while they have a chance. As surely as the suns knew it was over when Timmy hit the 3 in round 1, the hornets will know it's over if they lose tonight. Don't let 'em breathe, San Antonio! DON'T LET THEM BREATHE!

GO SPURS GO!!! The Drive for Five is STILL Alive!

First off, sorry to my fellow PtR folks that I haven't been contributing to these boards too much in the last few days. They're called finals and they suck (especially in the business school at Texas A&M). I've been reading and enjoying everyone's comments, though, (well, except GS, of course. But enough about me, on to the real purpose of this post.

Really, it's about the new orleans hornets basketball team as a whole. As a Spurs fan, there are three categories of teams for me: teams I loathe, teams I respect, and teams about which I don't give a rip. Teams like the lakers, jazz, mavericks, and suns fall into the loathing category, of course. Up until now, teams I respected included the rockets, pistons, and hornets. I was impressed by the resiliency of the city of new orleans after Katrina (which hit close to home for me as I used to live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast). I was impressed by how tightly the big easy clung to it's sports teams. They wrenched their hornets back from OKC, and they even claimed their saints back from the Alamodome (don't get me wrong, I'm dying for an NFL team as much as any other SA sports fan, just not under those circumstances!). Then, a hornets team that had been the NBA's definition of mediocrity for years suddenly gained new confidence from a young point guard playing with poise beyond his years. I never watched any hornets games this season, but when I found out that chris paul was a grad of the great TIM DUNCAN's school, I immediately assumed that he was a keeper. I mean, how bad could he be if he even partially imitated Wake Forest's greatest roundball alum?

Needless to say, I had high hopes for this series. I was looking forward to a humble display of terrific basketball on both sides. Even if the Spurs lost, I wouldn't mind if it was to a team that showed they were deserving in both word and deed of dethroning the defending champs.

In short, the hornets have disappointed me on all fronts. When byron scott, with his smug smile, is far and away the classiest guy on the team, you have a problem. From paul's egregious DEAD BALL flops (a first for floppers foreign and domestic, by the way), to the normally mild-mannered peja sto-whatever-his-name-is' off-ball antics with Bowen (don't think I wasn't watching you, you conniving jerk), I have been completely disenchanted with the hornets as a team. I honestly believed paul would demonstrate at least a modicum of the class that his elder statesmen model their games after, but apparently I've been hoping for too much. I've never seen a point guard with such a deceptively foul attitude. He's been actively mongering all-out war on the floor, yet he's still sainted (pardon the pun) by the media, and the Spurs (predictably) are continually vilified. I swear, I've never seen such a uniting of the media against a defending champion. It's a crying shame, and the league should be ashamed of allowing the demonizing of the Spurs to get to this point. The miami freaking heat got more praise in 2007 as they were getting swept in the first round than the Spurs, who dismantled a ridiculously talented suns team that was custom-built to beat them.

If the hornets beat my Spurs, I will be the first to congratulate them on a job well done. Their chance to earn my respect, however, has been irrevocably lost, and if the Spurs can't do it, I hope another team (I don't care who) kicks the ever living crap out of them. Not because I hate new orleans, but because the hornets have no class.

Great win in Game 3, Spurs. Let's tie it up in Game 4!

GO SPURS GO!!! BTHO (Beat The Hell Outta) new orleans!

After digesting an embarassing (yet not entirely unexpected) defeat at the U.S. Airways Center this afternoon, I found myself getting an undeniable sense of deja vu. After some fervent searching on the internet (duly noting the masses and throngs of suns "fans" that have come out of the woodworks to revel in temporary glory like inebriated inmates on playoff's death row), I found this gem of a quote from (who else), Manu Ginobili regarding the Spurs' game 4 loss to the suns in the 2005 Western Conference Finals.

What strikes me is the simplicity of the quote, especially since the game that had just transpired had been anything but pedestrian. The suns had home court advantage that in '05, but the Spurs appeared headed for a sweep behind 3 ridiculously strong performances from Timmy, Manu, and Tony. Game 4 had been stellar, with Amare (controversially) blocking a potential game-winning dunk by TD. Thus, the series went back to phoenix at 3-1, and many pundits declaring that since the suns had not only "solved" the Spurs, but were also headed back to the godforsaken desert wasteland they call a home, the team from Texas could find itself in a tight spot. Well, we all know what transpired. The Spurs came up with an efficient, well-executed, disciplined game and sent the suns packing, while SA came back home to prepare for yet another NBA Finals appearance.

Manu wasn't shouting when he made this quote. He wasn't ranting about the apparent no-call on Amare's block. What he was demonstrating was the cool of a professional that knows he's superior than his opponent. If one is certain ultimate victory is attainable, why get wrapped up in the trifles of the moment? Accept defeat, analyze mistakes, apply counter-strategy, and execute. I can almost guarantee you that all Manu was thinking about was how to play better in the next game, and the results spoke for themselves.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sugarcoat the situation at all. It is of paramount importance that the Spurs finish off these pesky bedouins with all due speed. We were outplayed and outhustled in every facet of the game, and anyone who thinks the Spurs were actually trying to still win this one at the halfway point of the 3rd quarter is not familiar with Pop's coaching style. I applaud him for gamely pulling the starters at a reasonable point and letting phx get their punches in without risking our integral pieces to injury. While the suns' starters piled on point after point to the squeals of a giddy, overhyped crowd, the Pop and the Spurs were taking notes. I can guarantee you that the trip back to the Lone Star State will be anything but relaxing for the Men in Black.

The Spurs have been in this position before. I have absolute confidence that they'll draw upon that experience to make phx wish they'd never come back to Tejas.

Put away the brooms, San Antonio........it's time to bring out the heavy artillery.

Welcome back to the Lone Star State, phx. Where championships happen!

"We are sad. We are angry." --M. Ginobili, May 2005

Regarding the Media's Turning on the Suns

I'm relatively new to these boards (though I'm definitely no newbie when it comes to Spurs basketball--even though I'm only 19), so some of you may not know my personality when it comes to dealing with people. I'm an African American sophomore in an organization called the Corps of Cadets here at Texas A&M University, and the ROTC programs here are run like boot camp (if you don't believe me, I missed watching the NBA playoffs yesterday because the entire Corps went on a 20 mile march--literally). Although I'm a somewhat sympathetic and conflict-avoiding guy by nature, being in the Corps will teach you to "handle your business" when it needs to be handled. As long as you keep it professional, you can completely break someone down without so much as lifting a finger.

Anyway, I say all that to say this--in spite of my training/surroundings, I'm what you can call a nice guy. I hated when people dogpiled on Dirk after the last two years (even though I LOATHE the mavs), because after all, The Admiral was in the same a similar position in the mid 90s. I refused to jump on Shaq when he was struggling on a ridiculously inferior Miami team. I respected the hell out of teams that were better than San Antonio because even though I bleed Silver and Black, I'm not so much of a blind homer that I can't acknowledge that other teams may be better than mine in some respects. That's just the kind of guy I am.

In spite of my nature, however, I am absolutely OVERJOYED at how the media has turned so quickly and completely on the phoenix suns entire organization. Let's face it, Spurs fans, while we've been doing more important things like winning titles, the suns have had one of the most exciting offensive styles of basketball that the NBA marketing machine has feed off of for nearly half a decade. With the minor exception of the GS Warrior's resurgence from basketball purgatory last season, phoenix has produced the type of game that draws casual fans and fills up the highlight reels. Even I was occasionally entertained by the suns' appalling lack of even the slightest defensive prescence uptempo style of basketball. It may not win championships, but it was fun for them while it lasted.

Then came "The Trade." I'm not gonna lie, when I first heard the trade rumors from dallas and phoenix, I thought it might be God's way of blessing me for finally contributing to the church offering plate last week. I mean, when your two primary playoff threats literally offer of their own accord to give up their primary role players (Devin Harris and Shawn Marion) for two aging stars past their prime (Kidd and Shaq), you must be in the Lord's favor! I don't know how many times I screamed "DO IT!" at my computer screen during the next fortnight or so. When the trades finally went down, the media (rightfully so) looked askance at the suns and mavs essentially altering their entire identities. Initially, both teams sank like stones, but when phx appeared to pull it together by building up wins against a combination of cupcake opponents and a couple of meaningless regular season triumphs over my Spurs, the media seemed ready to give their support back to phx once again.

I'm sure all of y'all remember the Spurs' last game of the season against utah, where they could've ended the night as high as the 3rd seed or as low as the 6th seed. I remember despairing because I'd been holding out hope for a matchup with houston (come on, who wasn't salivating at the prospect of taking on a rockets team sans Mr. Commie Government Experiment (yao ming)). The absolute last thing I wanted was a rematch with the suns, not because I was scared of them, but because of the 3-ring media circus the media could be counted on to cook up. Lo and behold, the Spurs beat the ever living daylights out of the jazz (even though they HAD to have tanked just a little), and while the media spent the rest of the night heralding the suns' chance for "revenge," I saw something different in the Spurs that night. It wasn't just that they'd handed a jazz team with an ulterior motive their head on a silver platter--it was the WAY they did it. Tony Parker not being denied in the paint, Timmy dominating the post and literally RUNNING THE FLOOR, Manu doing the voodoo that he do so well, the role players stepping up and playing well, regardless of the score. I saw a Spurs team that had finally clicked into their deadly "playoff gear." We usually see it during the Rodeo Road Trip, but this year it only took one game to define this team. Come on, these guys are vets, after all.

Still (as usual), the media questioned the Spurs' mettle/ability to deal with a super-motivated suns team that had made the entire season their own personal crusade against all things San Antonian. The Spurs had turned the other cheek to the constant needling from the desert all year, and like the true professionals they are, they refused to take the bait to get into a war of words before the series. But you know they had to have heard all the speculation/discreditation due to the events of last year. You KNOW! These are human beings, after all, not just basketball robots.

Of course, when the suns threatened to run SA out of their own building in the early goings of games 1 and 2, the media couldn't say enough about the motivation of phx against the age of SA. After all, the evidence was playing out before the eyes of the world, right?

That's when the Spurs flipped the switch called "PLAYOFF MODE."

It pains me to say it, but I didn't see game 1 live because I was out doing Corps military training. I mean, I was in SA for the Memorial Day Miracle, watched Steve Kerr ambush the mavs in '03 while I was living overseas, screamed myself hoarse during Big Shot Rob's game 5 of the '05 Finals, and repped SA last year during the finals when I was in Air Force training in Japan, so living all the Spurs' moments has been a point of pride for me. I went out to eat with my buddies after training, and some dude comes up to me and asks me what I thought about Duncan's 3. Natually, I'm saying "WHAT THE HELL?!" I mean, there are so many doggone mavs fans on this campus I thought the guy was just pulling my leg because I was wearing my Manu Ginobili t-shirt. Then I saw the highlights. OH. MY. GOD. I screamed even though it was only a replay. I still haven't gotten over my initial goosebumps. More importantly, I truly believed for the first time. Even though the media did it's job hyping the fact that SA needed 2OT to "scrape" by phx at home, I saw my Spurs show the type of character that championship teams are made of. Game 2 was less scintillating for the rest of America, but a breath of fresh air for yours truly. The lasting image from that game for me was Shaq sitting on the bench with his fingers in his mouth, whistling to distract Timmy while he was shooting free throws. Fittingly, Timmy made the shot. Game 3 didn't produce any screams from me. I literally sat back and marveled at the winning machine that is the SA Spurs. I mean, from Tony Parker looking like a monster, to Manu's anointed shooting touch, to Timmy eating Shaq's lunch inside and outside the paint, the Spurs finally stopped the gravy train of popular favor the suns have feed off of for so long and literally FORCED America to acknowledge they were the better team--and that it wasn't even close.

Regardless of whether SA finishes off the series in 4, 5, 6, or even 7 games When the Spurs sweep phx today, the sweetest part will be that they exposed the suns for what they are--a pitifully talented, yet undisciplined bunch that will never win anything of consequence unless they adopt a different philosophy. While SA has destroyed a team custom-built to beat them, phx has devolved into a deer-in-the-headlights organization of playoff chokers. And SA did it without even mentioning trying to validate last year's playoff results. This is why I LOVE THE SPURS!

Thanks for reading my rambling post (I'll keep 'em way shorter in the future!) Before I sign off and get ready to go to church, I'm gonna leave y'all with a youtube vid that describes what the Spurs are about this postseason. I'm usually not a fan of hip-hop (I'm more of a contemporary Christian/country type of guy), but in this case I'll make an exception! "We are here to build a DYNASTY!"

here's the link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=zMlhmVxMdlc

Get your brooms out, San Antonio!!! GO SPURS GO!!!!
