"Jim Thorpe Award (nominee) (best defensive back)
Eric Berry, Tennessee
The preseason favorite to win this award certainly didn't hurt his cause. Berry ranks among the SEC's top 15 in tackles (6.9 tpg), passes defended (9) and fumble recoveries (2). The senior played more of a safety-linebacker hybrid role this fall and finished second among SEC defensive backs in total tackles with 83. "

Draft Watch: Suh and the Lions

"That’s right. The Lions would have the No. 4 overall pick if the season ended today. But after Suh’s dominating performance against Texas -- 4.5 sacks among his 12 tackles -- he is atop the boards of many draft prognosticators. It’s absurd to start projecting picks in December, but Suh is as much of a consensus No. 1 as you can have at this point. "

Tamba Hali

Against the Broncos last Sunday, he picked up three sacks, forced two fumbles, and drove All-World left tackle Ryan Clady(notes) nuts. "He's had a lot of almost-sacks and a lot of pressures," Clady said. "I think he's one of the best in the game right now."

I'm sure Joel/Chris will be coming out with their 5 good stats post sometime soon... but, here's what I noticed:

* Better pass protection... only 2 sacks (especially impressive against Dumervil and company)
* Castille contributed... 3 carries for 26 yds, 1 catch for 8 yds... he also had some solid blocks, I think
* of course, Hali was a MONSTER. Get a pass rush up the middle, and/or on the other side of him, and this defense will be instantly improved. 9 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles against CLADY
* Mike Brown made some plays, one INT, 8 tackles... (though, I'm sure he missed some coverage, considering how easy Denver moved the ball)
* Only 3 penalties called on KC ( I think 2 were false starts on Pope)
* Cottam showed up... 3 catches... but, I think he had a couple of drops, too. At least he was in the game, though.
