A New Angle (But Not Like That)
To risk redundancy, I was noticing a lack of female perspective on the whole Ben ordeal(s) and decided to post.
A lot of guys on here are throwing the name-calling around, sluts, whore, prostitute, did I miss any? (don't answer that) Although I generally try to uplift my fellow females (and I don't mean providing underwire support), I am also a good Southern woman who is on a crusade to call out any girls acting unlady-like.
Personally, I feel that men throwing around the derogatory female words is like a white man throwing around that other word. So, let me do it for you....
Despite what anyone thinks of Ben at this moment, he wasn't charged for anything. I do wish there was a punishment for being stupid, which looks like that might be the case after meeting with Goodell and Rooney Jr. Everyone enjoys a night out with friends, but it appears he has a problem with risk-taking behavior. Any intelligent person would know to stay away from these party girls after the first incident, but now there seems to be a third girl trying to cause trouble. These girls who are popping up from some trash dumpster to accuse Ben of whatever are wasting my valuable football time.
I do NOT believe these girls are just innocent ladies having no clue what they're getting into. Yes, Ben should be man enough to NOT take advantage of drunk girls. He needs to grow up and allow a night out with the guys be just that. Honestly, I think his issues are stemming from an internal lonliness that he is trying to fill. But, that is neither here nor there. The fact is that these girls are just as responsible for their own behavior as Ben is of his. As they say, it takes two to tango.
I am a female, so let me tell you how the worst of us work (yes, it's true men. that's why you need to STAY AWAY):
"WOW I'm drunk!!! I can do whatever I want and just blame it on being drunk! it's like the temporary insanity plea!"
"Is that Pittsburgh Steelers two-time Superbowl champ Ben Roethlisberger?!?!!! Brittany is NOT going to believe this!!!! He's not as cute as Tom Brady, but he must be a gazillionaire!! I have to try to talk to him!!!"
"WOW this pro-football player wants to mess around! I'm going to tell EVERYONE!!" then when Ben actually makes a move, one of several thoughts can cross a girl's mind:
1. "Billy/my dad will be mad if I'm with another man/ he finds out I sleep around. Maybe if he thinks it wasn't my idea, we'll still be together/he'll still pay for my car/cell phone/rent."
2. "I'm not a slut I'm not a slut. I'm not a slut. I'm not a slut."
3. "I'm too drunk for this! I have to back out somehow!"
4. "Woah. I am up for sex, but this guy likes it rough! I can't handle that!"
5. "This dude has a lot of money. How can I get some of that?"
6. "I'm willing to mess around, but why does this guy think that I wanted sex after messing around?"
I am in no way saying that ALL girls think this way. As stated, that's what goes through the mind of the worst of us. In no way whatsoever do I believe these girls are innocent. They are just as guilty of Ben for being stupid. No one here better pull the innocent victim of the horrible man stuff.
Having said all that, I am very happy that the Commish and the Steelers are committed to helping Ben with his little problem. No, he did not commit any crimes, so far, but he is causing a major distraction for Pittsburgh. We do not need the negativity, especially coming off of a bad season. And although it's only poor judgment at this time, his behavior is bound to escalate without any repercussions. I am in support of a 2 game suspension and some major mentoring/therapy.
So there is your female perspective of Ben and his troup of misfits. I do not speak on behalf of all women everywhere. I am only speaking as a reformed stupid girl. Sorry for the extra Ben post!!
Get to Know You Part 2
Thanks WVPiratesFan for starting a "Get to Know You" post! However, with nearly 700 comments, it's making my computer strain. I want to save it's energy for, you know, work stuff. Let's continue the conversation below.
Here are the original questions:
1. Name
2. Age
3. Occupation
4. Place of Residency
5. Did you play any position in football?
6. What is your dream position?
Steelers questions:
7. Current favorite Steeler?
8. Alltime favorite Steeler?
9. Best Steeler memory?
Did I forget any? For kicks, let's add a couple more:
10. What made you a Steelers fan? For the record, I don't think any path to the Black and Gold makes you any more or less of a fan. The important thing is that you're here now :)
11. What is your favorite way to get through the off season?

Reflections on Season Opener: Steelers vs Titans
Please note that I give tough love to my team, but we all know that they get the job done in the end. So let's see how they did yesterday.....
So, did everyone see the car wreck that was the season opener? Don't get me wrong, we won - woo hoo! However, it was too clear to me that we were still shaking off the dust; whereas Tennessee came out fighting. We didn't win because we were good. We won because ultimately, Tennessee dropped the ball (metaphorically speaking) momentarily.
I've heard a lot of people ask what happened to Parker, "he couldn't get anywhere! what was up with him??" Well, I'll tell you what was up with him. Tennessee found the holes. They found the holes because our O-line left them wide open, not to mention the fact that Frank the Tank has yet to convince me he has ever deserved a spot on the 53.
At the beginning of the game, Mike Tomlin said that the most violent team will win the game. He would have been right, because Tennessee sure did try! While our O-line was playing around, they were practically running over James Harrison and Casey Hampton like they were nothing. We all know how Ben likes to rush the ball, and I have always lamented his love affair with the ball. Mendenhall and Moore both made mediocre plays that only furthered my chagrin with their obsession of rushing; particularly in such a tight game. Sure, they gained a few yards that eventually held the game at a tie, but as far as the game that it could have been, this was the low road.
Some people probably expect me to rag on Hines Ward for dropping the ball so close to the winning TD, but I'm not going to. It seems he was so excited to get so close, that he didn't check his perimeter. It was a careless mistake, and he knows that. Yes, that would have won the game and we would not have needed the overtime, but his drop is not what would have cost us the game. Neither our defense showed up until the 4th quarter -if they forced back the ball like that the whole time, there would have been a much different outcome - and the O-line did not protect the runners. Sure, there were a couple good pocket protectors, but they allowed Tennessee to fill in those gaps and swoop in for the kill. And Ben.....let go of the ball.
So, yes, I have a lot of tough love for my team, but it was not all horror. There were two shining stars of the game, Heath Miller and Troy Polamalu. Heath really stepped up last night as the best Tight End in the biz. One thing that I love about the Steelers is how versatile they are. (Usually) they are quick on their feet and can adapt to what needs to be done at that time. Heath Miller continued the character of the team while the others were still waking up.
Troy Polamalu was stunning, as usual. The biggest contributor to the defense in the first half and also showing the versatile character of the Steelers. He seemed to be all over the field, including catching a pass from Tennessee's Collins (who needs to smile more, in my opinion) with a single hand. However, he was injured during Tennessee's second attempt at a field goal, when he jumped up to deflect the kick with a single hand...again. Polamalu will now be out between 3 -6 weeks, and this leaves the fate of the defense in question if they continue to sleep during the first half. After the first half, other defense players began to wake up - particularly LaMarr Woodley, James Farrior, and James Harrison.
The rookies were able to get noticed in this game, and it is the beginning of a long season of surprises from the new guys. Stephan Logan was the star returner and reminded us why he is now on the 53. Mike Wallace was able to catch a few and contribute to what little yardage we acquired this game. Although I am happy both of these guys are here, I am more excited about Keyaron Fox, who was originally not going to be starting except for Lawrence Timmons being out on injury yesterday. In my opinion, it seemed that Fox and Farrior were creating quite the double-team on the defense. I really hope that Fox continues to be used to the fullest of his abilities on the field.
All in all, this game was not the one to watch if you wanted to see the Steelers' power on the field. It was ultimately a game of the kickers. If Bironas had made those field goals, we would be the losers of the season opener. It was also a field goal which won us the game. There were players who need to wake up, and a couple who made a couple good plays. But, let's hope our guys take this game as a lesson and learn to wake up BEFORE the game starts. We will be facing teams a lot more challenging than the Titans in the future, and we won't be able to afford to hit the snooze button on the field then.
All of this is, of course, said in love and respect to the team, and I look forward to watching them bring their A-game next Sunday.
What People Need To Realize About the Vick Story
So, I am all about saving puppies and making those who hurt them pay. However, I also believe in second chances and moving on to make a better life for oneself. Recently, an OpEd piece was published in my local newspaper about Michael Vick. The person obviously didn't want Vick back in the NFL. I have no idea if this person even watches the NFL, but I'm guessing not since they went into the whole "it's all about money" thing. I am going to paste the article here and dissect it with my rebuttals, because I'm tired of people ragging on Vick because of his crimes from the past.
Here it is:
Does Michael Vick deserve a second chance?
The media is doing surprisingly well presenting both sides of this question.
It seems that the NFL is showing that it really is all about the money. The Philadelphia coach who will be coaching him this year says Vick is a changed man. The coach's good friend, Tony Dungy, who is mentoring Vick, has said so. They assure us that everyone deserves a second chance. Vick has lost more then two years' wages and all of his endorsements.
The other side is reminding "fans" that Vick buried dogs alive, hung them, electrocuted them and drowned them, as well as financing and operating an illegal dog-fighting group. They feel he is crying with crocodile tears. Is he repentant, or just very smooth, and looking for another huge pay day?
In most fields, any malfeasance will result in immediate termination. Anyone who is convicted of a felony and goes to prison will not find his or her old job waiting when a sentence is completed. The business world is a one-strike-and-you-are-out environment. Once a person is guilty of any of any nefarious acts, the person will not start at the same level as when he or she were convicted.
Could you imagine a chief financial officer who serves time for any felony being hired as a CFO by another firm? How about anyone in any position of leadership, or management? I doubt it very much.
I see no reason why mega-buck athletes should be given such preferential treatment, unless it is only all about the money.
Ok, after reading that article, it is obvious to me that this person isn't even paying attention to the story, and probably just saw a headline while standing in line at Walmart to buy milk and cigarettes. If this person actually opened up the magazine/newspaper, they would see that Vick is NOT getting his old job back. He is being monitored by the board and even assigned a budget counselor. He is on a probationary 2 year contract with the Eagles, with which he is a back-up QB and possible exploring other positions. He has had to start from scratch since leaving prison, not only loosing his position with the Falcons and all his endorsements, but also being mildly out of shape and out of practice. When not keeping up with your opponents, this could mean heavy losses (just don't tell Big Snack).
I am glad that Vick is back in the NFL after counseling and a rigorous interview process. Of course, the flip-side is that I'm VERY HAPPY he's not on my team. There is just not room for him this year, and I did not want coverage of my games to be all about him.
I will be very interested to see how he progresses during this season - not just on the field, but in his character too.
