Anthony Madison back on the Roster
All day long Steeler Nation has been clamoring for Anthony Madison to be back on the roster, and now he is. Presumably this is a move to continue to unleash hell upon the special teams unit. Corey Ivy did a decent job this last week on special teams, but he recorded no tackles.
It is hard to say what the fix for the steelers is on special teams. However, it is worth noting that with Madison back the Steelers can (I believe) deploy a coverage unit exactly the same as one that they deployed last year.
The Butt-Flop Reverse
I'd like to take this opportunity to diagnose a brilliant play design that Arians unleashed this week. Steelers nation often trashed him for his poor game plans and poor play calling, but I think it is clear that we are witnessing the emergence of a cutting-edge offensive mind. Lets break it down!

Post Game Heroes has a nice screenshot of Logan as he is about to get into the pack on his return.
As Dagger says: "please explain to me how he scores on this play"
Timmons in a walking boot. Says he'll play in opener, but couldn't guarantee it. Mild high ankle sprain.
Smallest fanshot ever.
Entire Ravens Team Retires
Not quite, but drew bennett did.
More T-Rex O-line
"Man, those arms are looking short."
Got to love Tomlin.
Larry Foote Officially Released
No really, this time it is official. Unfortunately, the steelers were unable to exchange Foote for a draft pick. This may be because no one offered a pick good enough, or because the steelers were just being a swell organization and letting Foote go wherever he chooses for a new contract.
Shipley and Estermeyer impress
I know one is a long-snapper, but...
Anyone think it is coincidence that Shipley's locker is next to Hartwig and Estermeyer's is next to Warren? Who gives a potential backup LS a real locker and Ziggy Hood a temporary one? Tomlin is a huge jerk, and I love him for it.
2010 FAs post-draft, Contract Extensions?
Commenting on the Larry Foote post, I thought about revisiting what the steelers free agency is going to look like next year. As we all know, the steelers are generally in the business of signing extensions to players they would like to keep who are going to be free agents the next year. I am curious what people think about the likelihood of extensions though.
With the draft it seems clear that the steelers are looking to get younger at certain positions. These positions are also ones that have key players coming up for FAship next year. No one will expect our draft picks to step into roles this year, but I wonder how much their potential impact in 2010 will prevent the steelers from signing contract extensions to those they may replace?
O-line on verge of mindreading
What a great fluff piece, with some truly amazing quotes from Colon.
"It was weird to see guys look around and see who is going to lead," said Colon. "I try to not lead by talking, but by actions. I thought I did a fair job of that this year."
"For Darnell and I it was about being on the same page. A lot of times when you do that you know each other without even talking. Some of the great lines do things without communicating. They just know. I think that’s what we are on the verge of becoming."
Sorry to dym if this was featured on a six-pack.

Buccaneers to add QB Leftwich
Lord Byron is moving on to a team where he will probably get to compete for a starting roster position. It would have been nice if the steelers could have retained his services, but it is not surprising that Byron is moving on.
Best of luck to him and his new team. He was a class-act number two for the steelers. Without him we likely lose the skins game and things could have worked out a lot differently this past year.
Lets look for Batch to get resigned and Dixon to show enough in the pre-season to be active for game days.
Richard Quinn visits steelers
Could definitely be Spaeth's replacement...
"Terrific size and bulk...Strong and powerful...Outstanding blocker...Is stout at the point of attack...Gets a good push in the run game...Able to fit in space...Understands leverage, positioning and angles...Adequate hands...Uses his frame well as a receiver...Real tough...A hard worker. "
Isn't going to WOW anyone with his catching ability or YAC, but when was the last time Spaeth has?

3b compensatory pick - a myth?
Who did we lose to free agency that we are relying on to get our compensatory pick? The big name is Faneca who went on to sign with the jets for a big deal, who were the other small timers we might have lost?
We signed Memo and Fox in the off-season, any other small timer pickups I'm forgetting?
In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.
If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections").
From wikipedia
If you're going by the rules and assuming that the steelers broke even in FA, the steelers could only be awarded a pick in the 7th round. Does anyone know if these rules are incorrect or am I mis-interpreting them? Or am I missing lots of small-time FAs that were signed by other teams last season?
Max Starks Audio Interview
Steel Curtain Radio, a steeler podcast (for a steeler nation), lands an interview with Max Starks. Great to see the homegrown media get this kind of access.
Realistic FA Excercise - $11 million left
In the comments section of the max starks post, maryrose mentions that the steelers currently have $11 million dollars left. Last year the steelers spent around $4 million to sign draft picks.
As the front office of the steelers you are left with $7 million dollars to spend. What REALISTIC moves, REALISTIC restructuring and REALISTIC signings do you attempt to make in the off-season?
There are a few things hanging over the Steelers head right now including the resigning of certain RFA's to the squad (like Colon, Kemo, etc.) and extensions to players that will likely affect the cap room (Deebo, Heath, etc.).
Bruce Davis' Website
I know, I know, Bruce Davis has a website? Seriously? I guess if a 13 year old kids can have their own website nowadays then it's only fair.
There has been some talk about him lately in terms of what he has been up to besides the "FO expecting more from him". Nothing too specific there on his blog, but worth a read for some information.
"After getting drafted last spring, Davis spent all of this season transforming himself into an outside linebacker. There’s no place in the league for a 6-foot, 3-inch, 234-pound defensive end. So he put on 20 pounds, discarded his three-point stance and learned the ways of a ‘backer.’"
The Official Beerman13 Roundup
We had some real extreme reactions from "fans" this year after losing games. None of these were as dramatic and unreadable as beerman, a lovable "fan" that will not likely make an appearance on these boards until next year after a loss. This is an official tribute to Beerman's incredible posts throughout the year.
Because they are damn funny to read now.

Steelers Make Second Offseason Move - Stefan Logan (who?) to sign two-year deal
This isn't quite official yet, but supposedly according to tsn and vancouver sun the deal is to be done today.
Stefan Logan is a punt and kick returner. As a 3rd-down back he also ran for 889 yards on 122 carries, and caught 52 passes for 477 yards. If he makes the team I doubt he'll see 3rd downs. Stats mean nothing from the CFL, but hopefully we won't have to hear rumors about the steelers wasting a draft pick on a returner this year.
Steelers continue attempting to deal with issues on the team cheaply.
Anatomy of a play - interception
It's curious that they can talk about Fitzgerald getting blocked on the sideline and how he could have made the tackle if his guy wasn't in the way. You'd think while "breaking down" the play they could mention him running out of bounds for 40 yards.
Steelers Make First Offseason Move Not One Week Removed From SB Win - Doug Legursky signsTwo-year Deal
This could mean a lot of things, including:
1) Legursky will be a backup for centers/guards.
2) Legursky has shown enough to fight for center or guard spots. Huge implications here.
3) We need a backup longsnapper.

It was all going so well until I came upon James Harrison. To be fair, I’ve never met or interviewed the 2008 NFL Defensive MVP before and perhaps he was trying to be clever or glib. Perhaps he’d grown weary of answering similar questions, a feeling he is neither entitled to nor can he afford in the glare of the media spotlight at the Super Bowl. Young men being paid millions of dollars to play a child’s game have no right to petulance on top of the god-given gifts they’ve been given, and they minimally owe a modicum of respect to media merely trying to do their jobs which generate the ridiculous wealth the players demand. Unfortunately, he came across as a complete ass and someone either coaches or front office needs to take aside and forewarn before he turns the week into a complete disaster for himself and possibly his team.
Cardinals Mascot stomps Terrible Towel
It doesn't rile me up that much when a mascot sneezes into the towel or their mascot stomps on it.
Still, it was nice of them to guarantee a victory for the steelers.
