My Ideal Off-season
With another disappointing season come and gone, we obviously have many holes to fill on this team. Lets get right to it:
- Draft: QB must be addressed this year, as do the center, guard, speed WR, RB, and maybe free safety
- QB: Oh how great it would be get be able to somehow get Andrew Luck. This kid will be a stud in this league. This is very very unlikely for us, so I won't even consider this an option. I want nothing to do with Mallet or Locker. Mallet has too many question marks regarding his decision making, and Locker has looked horrible every time I have watched him this year. Maybe if he has a good senior bowl and combine I would consider him again, but as of now no way. Blaine Gabbart really intrigues me. I haven't seen much on him, so I can't judge. I really really like Ricky Stanzi. He was very accurate and efficient this past season, and I don't think he would take long to develop into a pro style since he played in one at Iowa. Nathan Enderle from Idaho is intriguing too, having good size and big arm, but did play at Idaho and may be more of a project. Andy Dalton is a winner, but also a huge project (and I don't like him at all). I would love to trade down in the first and get a second round pick and draft Stanzi.
- Center: I like Pouncy a lot. He is a physical blocker and would be a good fit in our offense. Plus, his brother is a pro bowler. The kid from Penn St. is a great pass blocker, but only mediocre a run blocker (not what we need). I don't know much about O'Dowd from USC, but he seems pretty solid in pass and run block. If we don't go QB in the first, this is an option for sure.
- Guard: See below regarding Mankins
- Speed WR: This draft is loaded with WR prospects. If Torrey Smith from Maryland is still floating around in the third, we need to grab him. He is a burner for sure, and would fill that major void in our offense.
- RB: I love Ingram, but I HATE drafting running backs in the first round. There are several stud RBs that go undrafted (Arian Foster, LeGarrette Blount, Priest Holmes, etc.) In later rounds, I like Demarco Murray, Ryan Williams, and Michael Leshoure (they may all be gone come the third/fourth rounds though).
- Rounds 4-7 should be for O-line depth and potential pass rusher projects.
- Coaching:
- I'm fine with Sparano, but we clearly need to get a new offensive coordinator and special team coordinator. If there are better options at HC (Cowher, Gruden, etc) then we go for it, if not, then Sparano can have one more shot. I also am not against giving Nolan another shot at HC.
- Free agency is going to play a huge role for this team. There are several key free agents that need to be targeted in order for this team to be successful in 2011:
- Logan Mankins: I know a lot of you think this is unattainable, but is it really? He clearly wants out of New England (as seen with his hold out), and I'm not sure if Belichick really cares to deal with this problem again. This move is a MUST for success. It will give us the most dominant left side in the NFL. It also fixes the second biggest problem on our offense. This will allow us to move Incognito to center and further develop Jerry as our RG. This should stabilize our running game and give us great pass protection
- Kyle Orton/Veteran QB: Not a "sexy" signing, but one that is needed. It may give us a good stop gap/veteran leader to help develop a young QB and to lead this team. Plus, Orton already knows how to get the ball to Marshall, and he had a very solid season this past year (the bad record was the fault of his god awful defense)
- Paul Soilai and Tony McDaniel: We need to resign these two, plain and simple
- Darren Sproles: Great scat back who will provide us with much needed speed from the RB position. Also very dangerous as a return man, which is also a major need. This guy can fly and I like him a lot.
- Aaron Maybin: I live in Buffalo, and there are big rumors going around that he may be cut. I know I know, he has been TERRIBLE so far, but I would like to see what Nolan could do with him. He is a former top 15 pick and only has been in the league for two years, so I'm sure he would come pretty cheap if he gets cut. Could possibly help the pass rush out (though I like Misi a lot).
Thats it, thanks for reading. Hopefully 2011 turns out better than this mess. Please feel free to comment, agree, flame, etc. Thanks!
