The art and science of taking a dive and the official 3-man poll
It seems as if the Hal-like spirit inhabiting the PPP (pecota postseason 'puter) is having a little bit of vindication at the moment. Even when the Marlins were up as much as 3 games on the Braves, it still stubbornly insisted that the Chop Shop had a substantially better shot at a postseason appearance. Maybe this wasn't such a stretch, playing the Nats for 7 of the last 10 is nice work if you can get it, and the Cubs/Giants series managed to conveniently take care of any other threats to the Rockies' spot.
The Regular Season is Over and official Bills postseason poll
This weekend represented the final knockout blow for a few pretenders to the throne - Texas, Florida, Atlanta, the Cubs, and the Giants all needed sweeps to stay in the realistic playoff hunt, and all failed. There's just a smidgen of drama left in the AL Central (like last year), but I seriously doubt that anyone thinks that the Yankees will have a problem with the Twins of Chisox on the slim chance that they overtake Los Tigres del Norte in the final two weeks.
So what do baseball fans do (besides watching football and plotting out our NBA seasonal O/U bets)?
We argue over postseason starters and contemplate matchups against opposing starters!
Spoiler week and the official beach ball poll
This is the week where the trash is finally taken out.
Destiny week for Cubs and Rox
Bob Howry giving it up in Cincy - Will Ohman on our own DL - Jason Marquis emerging as the win leader among NL west starters - it seems like faded and traded Cub hurlers have had more of an effect on the Dodgers than the guys we're seeing here this weekend.
And, so, we come to the moment of truth for both the Cubs, who will effectively be taking a shot to the dome with just one more loss in what must a stomach-turning turn of events for a team that was the odds-on favorite to win the pennant at various times in the past two years, and the Rox, who absolutely control their playoff destiny as of today.
G's - the penultimate position as pennant pretenders
The exciting thing about the game today is we have a chance to knock the giants back to single digits on the pecota 'puter for any possibly potential postseason play. They were crushed down to 2% on the nl west champ odds before last night's drubbing went in the punchcard.

Playoff pitching rotation
So, folks, we're already just about there. I think we'll be seeing game one at Chavez Ravine in both series. Who will be throwing the ball first for dodger blue? The USC quarterback controversy will have a strange parallel with the 3-man race to the be the Ace a few miles up the 110. Let's put aside our own speculation as to what WILL happen, and just share what we WANT to happen.
Juan vs. Manny
The Dodgers are amazingly lucky to have 4 outfielders, 3 of which can bring power and 1 of which can bring excellent speed. I'm not that worried by the thought of the team without Manny.
