A Message For Our Troops

I'm a liberal. Actually, I'm a flaming liberal. I detest a lot of the things that have gone on over the past decade with regards to American foreign policy, I was strongly opposed to the war in Iraq before it even began, and I've always felt that Afghanistan was neglected as a priority under the previous Administration.

On this Independence Day, I wanted to take a moment and make clear that this isn't the 1960's anymore. Veterans returning home don't have to worry about hippies calling them murderers and spitting on them. The public has finally moved to a place where, while we can hate the mission and the commanders all day, the soldiers are respected for following orders that may directly jeopardize their lives. Without them, we wouldn't be able to sit around and bullshit about mixed martial arts all day.

Take a moment and be thankful for all that the United States Armed Forces has done. If you see anyone in their fatigues or uniform, shake their hand and say 'thank you.' Help their kids by donating to their classrooms. Above all else, don't hold whatever beliefs you have about why they are where they are or what they are being directed to do against them. They don't choose the mission - they just win it. On behalf of Bloody Elbow and the rest of the online MMA community, I extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for all you do. Thanks, troops.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I consider myself a pretty shameless person. That's primarily a result of the fact that I tend to not do things about which I'd be ashamed. This includes getting in front of hundreds of people and spewing bullshit that I know a) isn't true and b) will get the hopes of MMASupremacy up.

Tito Ortiz is a different kind of shameless. This time, it's about his brand new organization - and the fact that it's primary partner's director of communications has never fucking heard of it:

However, when Fanhouse contacted Strikeforce director of communications Mike Afromowitz Tuesday, he made it pretty clear that no agreement is in place with Ortiz.

"I don't know anything about it," Afromowitz said.

Afromowitz doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would say one thing publicly while something completely different was going on behind the scenes. When he said that this was the first time he had ever heard of Strikeforce working with Punishment Fighting Championships, I genuinely believed him.

Mirko CroCop, who was planned to participate in DREAM.10 next month, suffered from food poisoning or salmonella on the 19th and was hospitalized. The diagnosis said that rest is needed so a DREAM.10 participation will probably not happen. It seems that Ray Sefo or Mighty Mo were going to be Mirko’s opponent.

Karma is a bitch.

See, The UFC Does Too Help Smaller Organizations

I'm sick and tired of the notion that the Major Leagues of MMA (who could I possibly mean), in any way, shape or form, harm smaller organizations - when everybody does better, everybody does better. Want proof? Strikeforce's card was absolutely lousy with UFC veterans last night. Jake Shields~~, Mike Whitehead~~ and Brett Rogers have never fought in the UFC. As for the other 780% of their main card:

Arlovski (9-4 in UFC before deciding to leave. Good call not paying him big bucks, Dana.)
Lawler (4-3 in the UFC, 1-3 in his last four with org)
Diaz (4-4, lost last three)
Smith (1-3, only win against Pete Sell)
Randleman (4-3, last fought there in 2002)
Riggs (3-4. got kneed in the face by Diego Sanchez)
Baroni (2-5, lost last four)
Whitehead (0-1, loss to Jardine, lost TUF 2 – credit to who me)

These guys took the celebrity, credibility and quality wins they got in the UFC and used them to basically make a main card for Strikeforce. Don't tell me being in the UFC hurt these guys or that the UFC's humongous popularity did anything but benefit Strikeforce in this case.

Richard Wade Just Sprinted Into My Flying Knee

Wow, this is fancy. I'll have to play with this later.

Anyway, Richard and I finally figured out how to play heads up on UFC Undisputed 2009 after fumbling around. This led me to refer to the online game finding mechanism as 'some beta ass shit' so STOP CALLING ME A FAN BOY. Eugene Schelfaultamamajingo wanted details.

Our first fight was a fairly uneventful Lauzon v Franca matchup (I, Franca, sunk in the triangle choke halfway through the second). The second, pitting his Tyson Griffin against my Florian, was actually pretty spirited - until that part three seconds into the third where he sprinted into my flying left knee, painfully cascading into the canvas. It was beautiful. It was cathartic. It was every time I've disagreed with the almighty Meta Rankings (peace be upon them) rolled into one fantastic joint-cranium collision.

Oh yeah and I won the next three. I'm only updating again if I can beat him now that he's decided it'd be cute and all to be the best lightweight in the world (BJ Penn). War Franca!

I'm watching this thing install a bunch of shit and then I'm going to play around for a while, but I'll be online (PS3) for a good portion of the next week jamming out on this instead of studying again for the SAT's (I think going with a system clear of Jim Beam and working with more than 150 minutes of sleep should help plenty).

Heavyweight Brett Rogers is keeping himself ready for a potential fight on the upcoming June 6 Strikeforce event in St. Louis. As of Friday morning, Rogers' involvement on the card is not official, as Strikeforce is looking for a suitable opponent for him. The former EliteXC fighter was once rumored to be fighting current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, but thus far, no deal has been reached. Right now, there is one slot to be filled on the Showtime portion of the card, as the Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante vs. Jared Hamman fight has been moved to the non-televised undercard.
