Edgar Renteria, Future Hall of Famer?
Depending on how much longer Edgar Renteria plays he has a legitimate claim at being a Hall of Famer, according to one measure. Let’s first say that this seems a little crazy, but here’s why it’s at least a talking point. Bill James developed the Hall of Fame Monitor points system to determine how likely a player is to make the Hall of Fame. Basically, if you get 130 points you're a lock. 100 points, you have a shot. Right now, Renteria has 94 points. And there are some very obtainable ways for him to get close to the 130 point level:
-As a team’s regular shortstop Renteria could earn two points for every Division Championship series his team wins in the future. He’ll earn even more points if the Reds or any other team he plays for wins an NLCS (5) or World Series (6). I think the Reds have a good shot of making the playoffs. So he has a good chance at more points: 96 points
-Renteria will earn nine more points for 2500 career hits. He needs 248, which at his current pace he should get over two seasons, maybe a third. Many people don’t realize that Renteria isn’t that old. It only seems like he’s ancient because he came up when he was 19. He’ll be 34 this season, which means it isn’t a stretch to think that he could play three to four more seasons: 105 points
-Renteria will earn 15 additional points for playing 2100 games at SS (he already got 15 for 1800 games) . He's at 2028 games currently, so that should be easy. However, keep in mind that Paul Janish will also have an opportunity at shortstop this season, so it could take Renteria a little while to get 72 more games at shortstop. Let’s say he does: 120 points
At 120 points, he's very close to lock status. If he just plays a few more seasons and gets lucky with the playoffs, he'll be a lock according to this measurement. I think that’s incredible, because I don’t think of Renteria as a Hall of Fame Caliber player.
He’s only been above average at the plate (OPS+ > 100) in one-third of his seasons. He also only has two gold gloves. For now I won't get into other fielding measures, but the takeaway is that at points he’s been a very good defensive shortstop, but not the type of guy who can ride his fielding into a Hall of Fame induction.
Nonetheless, Renteria is an interesting story as a player and being in the right place at the right time is a major factor in him earning so many Hall of Fame Monitor points. He’s played on three teams that went to the World Series and was a pivotal player in the two that his team won (scored the Game 7 winning run in 1997 and obviously was the World Series MVP in 2010). Reds fans should hope that Renteria brings a little bit of his luck to Cincinnati.

Tennessee Defectors
This is all wishful thinking, but I'm sure Doug Marrone wouldn't mind getting a few guys that will inevitably jump ship from Tennessee. I would love to get a spurned David Oku. A David Oku whose disenchanted with what's been going on with the Tennessee program for the past year and is willing to sit out a year to become the feature back at a place that really wants him. I know it's not going to happen, but I can dream, can't I?
Worst SU sports week in history?
I definitely haven't thought hard enough about other weeks in SU history, but this has to rank up there as historically bad. Football loss, Mike Williams leaves team, Car Accident and Suspensions, Basketball exhibition loss to Le Moyne... And it's only Wednesday! Can we send a bunch of four-leaf clovers, rabbits feet, genie lamps to Doctor Gross so this week doesn't get any worse?
Any other really bad weeks come to mind? Two bad events have to happen to qualify, or one really crappy event, like a loss to Vermont.
Oku Picks Wrong Shade of Orange

David Oku will have to compete for carries now that he's not the best running back recruit on his team. Bryce Brown signed with Tennessee today and I now loathe Lane Kiffin for gobbling up all the good running back prospects.
Actually, I can't really blame him, I just really wish Syracuse could've nabbed Oku. Blast!
