It's slow so I'll make the annoying fantasy post for the day.

Anyone play Sandbox fantasy baseball? We have great dynasty league and there may be a couple openings. Details:

-Finishing our 2nd year
-The only 16 team league in Sandbox
-30 man active MLB roster
-30 man FARM/MiLB roster
-5 man DL
-60 keepers total
-FYP draft every Aug (after the signing deadline)
-Winter meetings: FA/Prospect draft in Dec
-MLB AND MiLB FA during the season, no waiting on the next prospect draft to pick up the guy you want
-H2H (I'm a roto guy but H2H in Sandbox is fun, like 2 games of football every week)
-No hitting or pitching limits

We also have a league website to host the drafts and for off-season activity.

Thanks,

While we are on the subject, I was flipping channels the other night when I caught a discussion on CNN about a black baseball player being allegedly discriminated against at a university in Connecticut.

Then the I heard the sentence that made my jaw drop...

"This same young man, a Major League scout asked my husband what's the, quote, "makeup" of this player -- code words for what is his character, a question that would never be asked about a white player."

The word "makeup" appears on over 1000 articles on BA's website and I'm quite sure they aren't all about black players. It's thrown around here and in any other prospect circle and I've never felt it had a racial component. Sure, when someone says an African American is "articulate", that does make me uncomfortable. But makeup?

The quote was from Judith Browne-Dianis, co-director of the Advancement Project, a civil rights group based in Washington. You can read the entire transcript here:

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0706/11/pzn.01.html

Beane Counters Dynasty League looking for owners

Beane Counters is a free Yahoo league with prospect drafts and rosters kept on a well organized site.

The league will be entering its 2nd year and is changing from a rookie keeper to a dynasty format. New owners will inherit a good group of rookies and prospect plus get to pick their veterans.

The format is a bit unique. It's actually two leagues, an AL only and a NL only with each of the 12 owners having a team in each. Owners will compete in each league and also for an overall title which will be updated weekly on the league's home page. Your ranking will be calculated by your combined rank in each category.

8x8 Roto
(R HR RBI SB BB AVG OBP SLG)
(W SV K HLD ERA WHIP K/BB K/9)

Yahoo Roster: 30 or more in each league
Prospect Roster: currently 15, probably expanding to 20

I know some of the categories seem redundant but we have used the format for several years (same league but non-keeper) and it and everyone seems to like it. There is a good balance of compiling and ratios that makes the standings interesting but it also emphasizes the numbers people like us follow closely.

If you are interested please feel free to contact me and check out the web site.

sungods7@yahoo.com

http://www.staff.missouristate.edu/b/BrianHays/mlb/beane/

Thanks,

Brian

Saw in the boxscore that Miller pitched today, finishing off a loss to Yankees. Anyone see the game? How did he look?

An uneventful 1.0 0 0 0 0 0 line
17 pitches, 12 for strikes

141 pitch CG for Mike Pelfrey today

I watched Pelfrey for about 5 innings today against SMS at Hammons field. His secondary stuff looked a little better than what I saw from him last year at the Valley Tourney but much of it was out of the zone and he followed it with fastball strikes. He was consistently at 93 (I sat behind the scouts) for the time I was there.

It was a cool day getting colder and a mist was getting heavier in the 5th. They had someone warming up in the pen and they were facing a weak lineup so I figured his day might be done. I was rather surprised to see that he finished the game, throwing a whopping 141 pitches. Is this a typical workload for Pelfrey?
