Lookout Landing A New First baseman or DH

So i know that there are a ton of options out there and I would like Barry just as much as most of you on here but we all know that the FO won't sign him. Being as Bavasi is an idiot anyway, I doubt that either of the people I am about to propose will even be looked at but I thought they were interesting options and wanted some feedback.

1) Nick Johnson

Pros:

Good R/L splits

Decent power numbers

Great career OBP

Has relatively small contract through 2009 season

Coming off of very effective and healthy 2006 campaign

Cons:

Injury prone (although all except limited back issues were freakish accidents)

Spent all of 2007 on DL due to broken leg

2) Dimitri Young

Pros:

Switch hitter with pretty even splits against righties and lefties (does lose some power and OBP against lefties. Career OPS vs. R: .844. L: .781)

Contract runs for 10 million total through 2009

Decent (better than most current mariners) OBP

Cons:

Injury prone/Substance abuse problems

High strikeout rate/Not enough walks or home runs to compensate

These are just some of the things that I found good and bad about both of these players. I feel like one of them could be traded when Young is healthy because they both play first base. Here are some questions I have:

Are either of them good enough defensively to merit playing time at first base or would any trade likely be to put them at DH?

Aside from the fact that Bavasi is probably too boneheaded to trade for one of them what do you think it would take to obtain them and would it be too much?

Keep in mind that what we think it would take to get them and what Bavasi would give up to get them are two different things.

My thoughts on the subject are that Washington does not have enough starting pitching and I wonder if we could possibly trade some of the less important starting prospects in a deal. Not sure if that is plausible.

Lastly are there any better fits out there that we could sign or easily trade for to play RF, 1b, DH or even LF?

Love to hear your thoughts. Post Away.
