Behind the Steel Curtain My first Steelers game Sunday -- need advice!

I've been a diehard fan as long as I can remember. I almost never miss a game, even if it means hiking across the city. My co-workers check to see whether my Steelers won on Sunday so they know if I'll be in a good mood on Monday, or angry and snappish. I've got loads of Steelers gear. I check every blog obsessively.

But I've never been to a game.

Behind the Steel Curtain Steelers Cut 10 (ROSTER OPEN THREAD)

It's that time of year. We should be hearing a lot of rumors and news over the next 24 hours -- just one more way social media is changing the NFL -- so I thought I'd start a thread where we can share what we're hearing.

Chime in with any news about who will and won't be suiting up in black and gold this season!

UPDATE: Not a rumor -- Steelers.com announces the first set of cuts:

TE Eugene Bright, OG Dorian Brooks, OT Kyle Jolly, WR Brandon London, TE Sean McHugh, DT Scott Paxson, LS Matt Stewart, S Justin Thornton, RB Justin Vincent, LB Renauld Williams.

Bright, Brooks, Paxson and Thornton seem likely practice squad candidates. I'm a bit surprised by Williams as the rumor was Tomlin loved him. The rest make sense.

UPDATE 2: Urbik gone too, says his agent. 10 more to go.

NOTE: Please check out the frontpage post on roster cuts and continue the conversation there! -- Syrsteeler

"Roethlisberger's suspension is 4 games. He has left the NY area and is en route back to Pittsburgh."

Behind the Steel Curtain Cuts just got tougher

The last preseason game just ended, and it only made the cuts to come tougher.

Charlie Batch just went from cut material to indispensable backup, based on Byron Leftwich's health. For the 2nd game in a row, Jonathan Dwyer showed what he can do when he's in shape.

The only bubble inside LB who played better than Stevenson Sylvester was Renaud Williams, who shed blocks and went after the ball carrier with focus and toughness instead of rookie wild-abandon. But that same eagerness drew Sylvester to play after play.

Patrick Bailey, a ST demon with 3 games of tape saying he can't cut it in the base D, played on the Panthers side of the line of scrimmage all night. Frank Summers needs to pump his legs instead of diving, but made key blocks to spring runners on offense and ST for 4 straight quarters.

Crezdon Butler? He slipped one young, doofus mistake in between a few quarters of athletic, hard-hitting ball. Which would leave Anthony Madison on the outside looking in, if it weren't for the improvement he's shown this preseason on D while keeping up his special teams play.

Hell, even Stefan Logan showed not only skills as a punt returner we all thought questionable, but more toughness and hard-hitting as a gunner than I thought possible.

Say what you want about Tomlin and his decisions this offseason, or Colbert and his late-round busts, they've stacked this team with depth from top to bottom and it showed through this game. I don't know if the high-level talent is there to be successful this season, but there are enough players on this 75-man roster to go 18 games -- or at least make for very, very tough cuts for the coaching staff.

Ed Bouchette reports:

"The Steelers came to terms on a two-year contract with veteran tackle Flozell Adams this afternoon and he will arrive in training camp with them this weekend."

The o-line battle in training camp just got even more interesting.

Behind the Steel Curtain Predictors Pick Pouncey

Rick Gosselin's final mock is out today, and he's got us selecting Florida C Maurkice Pouncey.

For those who don't know, Gosselin -- one of the best-sourced reporters out there -- is regarded as producing one of the finest mock drafts each year, and it's true. Go check out his draft from last year. With the exception of a) trades that no one foresaw and b) right position, wrong player (Unger / Wood, Wells/Brown) and c) the Raiders, he's exceptionally accurate -- at least, it's important to note, as far as mock drafts go.

Gosselin does 3 mocks every year. The first is based on his own appraisal of how good players are (and he's no scout). The 2nd is based on perceived need. The third, and final, takes both into account but primarily draws from his sources and what he's hearing around the league.

This year, Gosselin first had us taking Boise State CB Kyle Wilson. In his second, he picks PSU DT Jared Odrick to replace Aaron Smith. And in his final mock, he has us selecting Maurkice Pouncey, the versatile 20-year-old out of Florida.

He's not the only one.

ESPN is reporting that Roethlisberger will be suspended 4-6 games.

According to ESPN, the suspension "will contain conditions that will allow it to be reduced based on Roethlisberger's behavior and compliance with clinical evaluators."

Another interesting tidbit, they claim Steelers were expecting 8 games.

NOTE: Tip of the hat to SteeladyinVA and WolfpackSteelersFan for reporting this in fanshots and fanposts.

UPDATE: From nlevine34 in the comments, Adam Schefter is reporting that the Steelers have begun contacting teams to trade Roethlisberger for a top 10 pick. Things just got more interesting.

about 2 years ago Tiny syrsteelerfan 517 comments

Adam Schefter is reporting that the Steelers have traded a 7th round pick to the Buccanneers for Leftwich.

Lefty performed well in limited action with the Steelers during their Super Bowl run in 2008, but left for Tampa Bay and the chance to become a starter. He went 0-3 and ultimately landed on injured reserve.

I like this move. It's a potential sign that the Steelers expect Ben Roethlisberger to be suspended for a significant length of time and/or, following on the heels of OTAs, that the coaching staff doesn't have 100% confidence in Dennis Dixon.

But I will try not to read too much into it. At the very least, it gives us a valuable backup -- Dixon is still fairly unproven, Charlie Batch is past his prime, and both have struggled with injuries -- and creates competition at a critical position.

Editor's Note: I'm not so sure that this move doesn't at least suggest that the Steelers are willing to entertain trade offers for Ben Roethlisberger. Given what we saw out of Dennis Dixon last year, I see no reason why they'd need to bring back extra 'insurance.' Not saying I think it's likely Big Ben will be traded, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility whatsoever if this report is indeed true. -Michael Bean-

Behind the Steel Curtain Surprises at 1.18

Earl Thomas. Kyle Wilson. Mike Iupati. Maurkice Pouncey. We've heard a lot about these names as potential 1st round draft picks. Perhaps too much.

Consider the Steelers 1st round drafts the last two years. Ziggy Hood flew under the radar for most of draft season and wasn't seen as a possibility to many until the last week or so, when word spread that the Steelers like his athleticism and character. Up until then, he was regarded as a gap-penetrating DT who didn't fit our scheme.

Heck, Ziggy spent more time in college spinning than the prior year's #1 pick, Rashard Mendenhall. Unlike Ziggy, Mendenhall wasn't a schematic mismatch but a draft position mismatch. He was supposed to be off the board long before the Steelers drafted. After the draft, the Steelers admitted they didn't expect him to be there and that he wasn't a need, per se -- but that he was on their list of must-draft players if they were still on the board.

So what does this mean for the 2010 draft? What names aren't we spending enough time thinking about?

Sounds like it was the coaching staff's call:

"After discussing whether Roethlisberger's presence on Monday would create too much of a distraction, the decision was made for him not to attend the team's offseason program."

I suspect too much will be made of this in terms of its impact on next season. That said, it's a glimpse of insight into how the coaching staff feels about the situation -- and at the end of the day, whether it will have a big impact or not, you want your franchise QB there with the team.

ESPN is reporting that Steelers will sign one of Tomlin's old players:

"Free agent safety Will Allen will sign a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, according to a source close to the situation."

This means it's more likely than not that Ryan Clark will not be returning -- instead following former teammate Joey Porter's footsteps and getting a big deal from Miami.

Allen was All-American at Ohio State and a ST captain and ST Pro Bowl alternate with the Bucs. Also, he's the dude who broke Willis McGahee in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.

UPDATE: After a few quiet days, the Steelers have really jumped into free agency. The Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers are reuniting a pair of FA players with their old coaches, hiring WR Arnaz Battle from SF and OT Jonathan Scott from Buffalo.

Battle is a veteran WR and former special teams captain for new Steelers ST coach Al Everest. He'll also be in the mix as a backup slot receiver, a position where the Steelers are thin.

Jon Scott is a 6-6, 318 offensive tackle who is following Oline coach Sean Kugler from Buffalo and could be in the mix at OT or RG.

The Post-Gazette is reporting that the Steelers are close to hiring former 49ers ST Coach Al Everest to replace Bob Ligashesky.

Similar to new O-line coach Sean Kugler, Everest is moving laterally and filling the same position with a new team after a mixed record in 2009.

Unlike Kugler, however, Everest was let go while other coaches were retained -- and while Kugler held together a line decimated by turnover, Everest was a source of controversy over his decision-making.

That said -- it couldn't get worse than this year, and Steeler Nation welcomes Al Everest to the black and gold family and hopes for the best.

Also, The Steelers have announced that WR coach Randy Fichtner has moved to QB coach. Fichtner, hired in 2007 by Tomlin to coach WR's, is well-regarded in the organization and coached collegiate QB's.

Whether or not this was a good move will be determined by Ben's performance next season, but the move does set up Fichtner as a potential candidate for offensive coordinator if Arians is not retained when his contract is up after next season.

Buffalo Rumblings Tell me about Sean Kugler

Hey folks,

Greetings from Steeler nation. I thought I'd journey over from BehindTheSteelCurtain to ask about Sean Kugler -- your old offensive line coach and the newest member of the Pittsburgh coaching staff.

It was just reported that the Steelers have signed Kugler to replace Larry Zierlein. Zierlein was fired this offseason after three rough years filled of an ineffective running game and Big Ben sacks (even though the line improved this year).

Anyway, I was hoping to get your impressions of Kugler.

Is he a good coach? What are his strengths and weaknesses? Power scheme, or zone blocking scheme? Were you sad to lose him -- or glad? Were the sacks this season the fault of the players or the coach?

In today's end of season presser, Tomlin announced that the only Steelers coaching change as of yet is the retirement of QB coach Ken Anderson.

According to Tomlin, he and Anderson had discussed the former Bengals QB's possible retirement prior to the 2009 season.

As for other much-discussed changes including whether the team will release Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians, Tomlin said he is still in the beginning of the off-season review process and it was not an appropriate time to announce any changes.

Still, his reference to an "appropriate time" left some observers thinking that at least a few changes to the Steelers staff are looming.

Jim Wexell is reporting via Twitter that Darnell Stapleton just told reporters he will be going on IR.

If so, as Wexell notes, Doug Legursky is all but guaranteed a roster spot.

It's a busy news day for the Steelers, with reports this AM that Brett Keisel is close to signing a 5 year extension (reported in this fanpost by SteelCage).

The first round of cuts are coming up -- who gets the ax?

S Derrick Richardson, LB Andy Shantz, and LB Tom Korte did not play Saturday, so that could be a good place to start.

Who else?

From the Steelers official site:

"Miller, who would have entered the final season of the contract he signed as a No. 1 choice in the 2005 NFL Draft, has a new six-year deal from the Steelers that binds him to the team through the 2014 season."

Terms have not been announced. This is a great move. We lock up a fantastic all-around TE and outstanding person. It is a credit to the Steelers organization that they are able to get deals like this done with fantastic players. And as the article says, it shows how much Miller means as a player and a teammate that they didn't bet on the CBA, but rather signed now.

I've long said Omar Khan is the most under-appreciated member of the Steelers organization - this is why. Fantastic news. What do you think -- and who should be next?

...President reportedly interested in James Harrison taking over as head of homeland security.

All seriousness, the Steelers have OTA's scheduled that day but a team spokesman says the trip to the White House will take priority. It will also be a homecoming of sorts for Nate Washington, Larry Foote, and Bryant McFadden.

Behind the Steel Curtain Pittsburgh Steelers Projected 53-Man Roster #1 - 4/30/09

I'm buried in book work so I am pleased to see the activity kept up at a fast and furious clip by y'all. Many thanks to syrsteelerfan for this entry, a first crack at predicting the Steelers 53-man roster when the '09 season commences in early September. - Blitz-

********

Here is my first projected 53 man roster based on recent signings, upcoming cuts, the draft, and my own opinions.

I'll update this after mini-camps, OTA's, and training camp as we learn more about these players. For now, I've tried to restrain myself from assuming too much about our rookies, they'll have to prove it at camp. I've included all of our round 1-5 picks in the roster, and while i love this draft that may not happen. The safest bets are high picks, guys at thin positions, and those who can play special teams.

Throughout the spring and summer we'll learn which of these guys are players, which are competing to start and which to make the team, what free agents are better than the players we drafted or have on the roster, etc. So this is just the first draft, and we'll learn more when they hit the field.

**UPDATE** Well, looks like I should have waited until tomorrow to put this together, as the Steelers today announced the signings of 4 veterans including WR Shaun McDonald, and the release of LS Jared Retkofsky.

I've edited the below to reflect that.

Multiple outlets are reporting that the former Steeler has been cut by the Bengals along with former 1st round running back Chris Perry - and that the team plans to part ways with Levi Jones after picking Andre Smith this weekend.

I don't think the Steelers sign him unless he gets past his legal troubles AND someone gets hurt in the preseason. But if the Bengals think you aren't good enough / have too many off-field issues... you're probably not going to have much luck anywhere else.

Great news on draft day.

From ESPN:

"Ward agreed and signed a four-year, $22 million contract extension that will allow him to stay a Steeler the rest of his career, according to a source. Ward was scheduled to be a free agent after the season. He is now signed through 2013."

Behind the Steel Curtain Alphonso Smith?

I was watching NFL Network tonight, and they showed a segment with Mike Mayock and Brian Billick predicting teams picks. It's a regular segment, and tonight they predicted the Steelers pick.

I've made no secret of the fact that Mike Mayock is my favorite draft guru. I've trusted him since last year, when I was impressed with his NFL.com analysis, he predicted like 8 picks in a row on draft day, and he was proven right about the future success of NFL picks (he loved Matt Ryan, didn't like MacFadden, for example).

Nevertheless, I was suprised to hear him predict Alphonso Smith, CB from Wake Forest as the Steelers pick at 1.32. I've heard a lot about Mack, I think Darius Butler or Hakeem Nicks could fall, and my favorite Steelers beat reporter Jim Wexell both loves Eric Wood.

Behind the Steel Curtain Mel Kiper's 4 round mock

Interesting...

32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Eric Wood, C, Louisville

Wood has been a player on the rise of late, and with his size and skills he could find himself a Steeler for a very long time.

64. Pittsburgh Steelers: Jairus Byrd, CB, Oregon

96. Pittsburgh: Quinten Lawrence, WR, McNeese St.

132. Pittsburgh: Sen'Derrick Marks, DL, Auburn

I'm no Kiper fan, but I'd give this draft a B+.

1) The Steelers analysts I trust most pick Wood as our guy at 1.32. Big, strong, incredible intangibles, can excel at G and then move to C.

2) Jairus Byrd has been someone i've been thinking about in the 2nd round for a while. He's big, physical, the knock is that he's not quite fast or quick enough to play a ton of man coverage and is a better fit for a zone system. Luckily we are primarily a zone system, and he'll come up and play the run - one of the main things we look for in a corner.

3) Don't know much about Lawrence other than this but he sounds like the fast return specialist / slot receiver we need; other options may be better here.

4) Not wild about Sen'Derrick Marks. It sounds like he has a lot of potential but is more of a project, and I'm not sure he has the length to play the 5 technique in our system.

What do you all think?

A lot of Shipley fans around these parts, so this should make people happy. I'd only want us to take him in the 4th or 5th, maybe our late 3rd compensatory pick.

Shortest arms at the combine, but strong as heck and in the words of Mike Mayock, "all he does is block people!". Good character guy too.

I'd like to see a Guard in the 1st, Shipley a few rounds later, and a Tackle thrown in somewhere there too. That would be a solid draft for us.
