Lifelong Reds fan from Ithaca, New York. Just finished law school, about to intern at the United Way, then take the bar and sell my soul to a white shoe firm. Either that, or default on my student loans and hope the gov't is too broke to care.
Living in Queens and loving it, even though the Mets and Yankees suck.

World Ph'n Champions: A 2008 Philadelphia Phillies Preview
2008

RS: 799, RA: 680, Pythag record: 93-69
Opening Day payroll: $98.2m

World Phuckin’ Champions. The losingest franchise in sports history won its second World Series in 125 years, to much rejoicing. The Phillies rode a second consecutive late season hot streak to the division title (helped once again by a Flushing choke job) and kept it going throughout the playoffs, going 11-3 in their run to glory. It was a deserved title—nothing like the fraudulent 2006 Cards—but it merits a closer look nonetheless.

Seeking 1 intrepid soul to join stat-geek fantasy baseball league
Howdy. This is an open invitation to join a Yahoo fantasy league my friend is running. We have four open spots. League parameters: 12 team mixed, points-only scoring. Max games per position: 162. Max innings: 1375. The scoring is based on linear runs, so the idea is to draft players who are actually good at baseball. Live draft, currently scheduled for Thurs. March 26 at 9pm.
Here are the positions:
C,C,1B,2B,SS,3B,CI,MI,CF,OF,OF,OF,OF,UT,UT,P,P,P,P,P,P,P,P
7 bench spots, 2 DL spots.
Notice that we do not distinguish between starting and relief pitchers. Drafting all starters won't help you beacuse of the innings limit. It's up to you to find the right balance of starters and relievers. The main idea is to reflect the fact that a 100 ERA+ starter is far more valuable than a 100 ERA+ closer.
Here are the points values:
| AB | -.26 |
| H | .26 |
| 1B | .47 |
| 2B | .85 |
| 3B | 1.02 |
| HR | 1.4 |
| SB | .22 |
| CS | -.38 |
| BB | .33 |
| HBP | .33 |
| OUT | .29 |
| ER | -.74 |
| HR | -.7 |
| BB | -.165 |
| HBP | -.165 |
| 1BA | -.235 |
| 2BA | -.425 |
| 3BA | -.51 |
The pitching stats start with OUT. As you can see, there is no K category. The categories are essentially the components of OBP and SLG. Also note that we penalize for CS.
If you're interested, reply to this thread and I will send you the league info. Some of us in the league already are more competitive than others, but in general, it's just a group of laid-back SABR-minded dudes. If you sign up though, please plan on sticking with the league at least through the August 16 trade deadline.
SI Reds Spring Training Postcard
SI has already bestowed upon us the dreaded "Rays of 2009" title.

RR Season Preview: New York Mets
Following up ken's excellent Phillies preview was a challenge, but I hope everyone enjoys this preview of the Metropolitans. Main sources for this include Baseball Prospectus, the Hardball Times, baseball-reference.com, and Tom Seaver's Wikipedia page.
Disclaimer: I may have gone a bit overboard on this one, but I was procrastinating!
PECOTA batting projections
Baseball Prospectus just released their 2007 PECOTA projections. Here are some notable Reds' offensive projections. The one that blew me out of the water was Votto. Hopefully he'll be up with the team sometime in 2007. Remember, these are the "weighted mean" projections.
Mojo!
Hey all! I know I've been a stranger since law school started, but given the importance of these last 5 games, I felt like I had to get on here express my wishes for good mojo upon the Reds and horrible voodoo curses on the Cards and 'Stros.
My baseball road trip
For those who don't remember, I spent a week in July with my brother on a baseball stadium tour of Detroit, Cincy (twice), St. Louis, and Kansas City. Here are my reports with a few photos thrown in.
Ballpark road trip
Tomorrow I am embarking on a journey with my little brother that will take us to 4 ballparks we have never been to, plus a couple of Reds games. Itinerary is as follows, if you want to live vicariously:
All Star Game "counts" again!
Bud Selig is a buffoon.
EdE to DL
Edwin just went on the DL. Olmedo called up from Louisville. Hopefully he won't be out for too long. Fortunately, Bad Man is breaking out at the right time.
Also, Lancaster reports that Griffey will be in the starting lineup tonight.
Batting Order
Ok, so there seems to be some opposition and some support for batting Dunn in the 2nd spot. Personally, I think it's a great idea. He gets on base and he doesn't ground into double plays, and as JD mentioned in a post, it's not like we're lacking for power in the rest of the lineup. Naysayers may want someone who handles the bat better, but I think the objective should be to score as many runs as possible in each inning, not one. Bunts and moving the runner over means you're probably only going to score one. The only situation where you need a good bunter is in a close game in the late innings, and so far this year Narron has consistently removed Dunn for a better defender like Freel or Q-Crack. I see no problems.
Eyewitness report: 4/23 at Milwaukee
Drove up to Milwaukee from Chicago with 2 buddies (1 Reds fan, 1 neutral observer--poor guy's a Royals fan) and partook in the famous Milwaukee tailgating scene. We seem to have blasphemed by bringing in Culver's rather than grilling our own food, but I know that Culver's is better than anything we could cook. In defiance, we brought Old Style as our swill of choice, and a golf cart sponsored by Miller Lite conspicuously passed us over while driving around the lot giving away free keychains to Miller drinkers. All in all, it was a great time, and I wish the Reds had a tailgating scene. It's a great way for fans to get to know each other. My observations...
Eyewitness Report: 4/13 Reds at Cubs
This was a "value day" at Wrigley, so last month I nabbed a sweet seat--4th row of the upper deck right behind home plate, just below the pressbox. There isn't a better place to watch a game, particularly at Wrigley with the great overhang. If someone ever tries to give you "infield terrace" seats, trade them in for the upper deck. It's the best UD in baseball. There was a threat of storms, but they thankfully never arrived, and the sky was mostly cloudy with a gametime temperature around 70.
It was all too predictable that Narron would bench EdE after the 3-error game, although the plus side was that it got Brandon Phillips his first start as a Red. Griffey expectedly sat out as a precaution, pushing Freel into center. The Cubs lineup was even more banged up, with Jacques Jones and Aramis Ramirez out, and Angel Pagan and Neifi Perez in. The Hardball Times ran an article this week about how Perez may become the worst hitter of all time this season. The rest of the Cub lineup wasn't much better, and even though Uncle Miltie was on the mound, I felt confident of a victory. Here are my observations...
