Second Funniest Team Name Disappears
Brainwash, a chain of hair dressers' in the Netherlands and Belgium, sponsors a Dutch team of three women in cyclo-cross with top rider Sanne van Paassen and (even) younger talents Sabrina Stultiëns and Evy Kuijpers. Today, Rabosport released the news that Brainwash moves to being a co-sponsor for ("starts a cooperation with") the Rabobank Ladies Team, bringing aboard Van Paassen and Stultiëns.

Should you ever come to the Netherlands for a bike ride, expect these toadstool cycling signs on every touristy cycle path.
FSA DS Calendar .ICS Download
The FSA Directeur Sportif calendar can now be downloaded as an .ics file (iCalendar format) for use in calendar programs like iCal, Outlook or Google Calendar. Three links to the complete calendar, men's races and women's races are on the FSA DS Calendar page.
FSA DS website downtime
Unfortunately, the FSA Directeur Sportif website seems to have some trouble now and again. Like now, again. The proper authorities have been notified and when they wake up all will be restored to full function, I'm sure. Sorry!
FSA-DS: The Value of Men's UCI Teams
A purely numerical approach! Get a list of all Pro Tour and Pro Continental UCI teams. Of their current riders, sum the points scored in 2011 and rider prices in 2012. Divide those figures to get a tentative UCI team ranking by expected return-on-investment. Forty UCI teams ranked in a long table on the flip:

Grace Verbeke injured in bike-car crash

Grace Verbeke leading the chase in Vargarda 2011
According to regional publication Knack.be, Belgian cyclist Grace Verbeke, 2010 Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) winner, was seriously injured this morning while out training in Flanders. Reports say a small breakdown lorry hit her on a crossroads in Gistel. Initially with life-threatening injuries, she was stabilised around noon in the hospital in Oostende.
Her team Topsport Vlaanderen - Ridley reports on Facebook that Verbeke lost consciousness for a moment, fractured an eye socket, has cuts to her face and thigh and heavily bruised her pelvis and femur. (Found via @TourDeJose)
Het Nieuwsblad says that, contrary to earlier reports, Verbeke's injuries were never life-threatening.

Copenhagen Hidden Alliances
To have national teams in this era of men's professional road cycling is a bit of an anachronism. It creates an interesting new dynamic at the World Championships compared to the other races we see all season. Some moves on the road in Copenhagen might be motivated by more than what obviously follows from jersey colours on the day. Most riders acknowledge this: if national team tactics don't work out, the next best thing would be for a trade team mate to win.
While having that priority would probably not be wrong by anyone's standards, sometimes, of course, it goes a little deeper than that. There might be money in it, too; either directly as a bonus from the guy trying to win or from his trade team sponsor, or as a result from ongoing contract negotiations. Even the national team selection process might have been influenced by trade team considerations. So I decided, third year running, to put all three teams next to each other: the national team, the current pro team and next year's pro team:

You don't need a super duper road bike to enjoy a 75 km ride! Here's the omafiets on a warm summer's day in July. Larger and 12 more in my Flickr set.
