Road bike sales race uphill in the Netherlands

6

Reasons cited are: green & healthy living trend, new gadgets & technological advances, Grand Tours starting in the country. Link to a Google translation of the press release.

Joop Zijlaard (Leontien van Moorsel's father-in-law) added another Dutch derny championship to his palmarès as a derny driver, for a total of 28 or 29. This year he shared his title with Raymond Kreder (warning: useless link). Poetic little clip as always, by TV show Holland Sport.

Redoute doubtful for LBL 2010

8

RTBF (French-Belgian TV/radio) reports that La Redoute won't be in Liège-Bastogne-Liège next year because of delayed road works. The Haute-Levée is also out and the Stockeu will be neutered. They will do the Côte des Forges instead.

Unfortunate sponsor names

New local Dutch espoirs/elite amateur team secured a headline sponsor with a rather shitty name: 'Baby Dump' (apparently it's a shopping chain).

No Evans in Tour?

43

According to Wielerland, Silence-Lotto manager Herman Frison has told magazine Cyclismag: "We must be realistic. With Contador, Schleck and Armstrong, it will be very hard to win the Tour the coming years. I would like to convince Evans to ride the Giro and Vuelta. A victory is feasible there. That is a reachable goal." [edit: found the Cyclismag link]

Pro teams at Worlds [upgraded!]

A work in progress. Any help appreciated, leave a comment. UPDATE: new, dynamic lay-out instead of the huge table. Every rider from UCI registry entered.

Interviewer asks if Rabobank, as "the Real Madrid of Dutch cycling," could sell Menchov and invest in youth. Rabobank team boss Harold Knebel says that, fortunately, that is not the way things works in cycling; Menchov has a contract for one more year and it will be honoured. "We will definitely be able to put him to good use in the GTs." Asked if Menchov will be there in the Tour: we don't know yet, way to early to tell. Gesink? Absolutely. Interviewer calls it a minor landslide. Knebel finds that term acceptable but points out that no decisions have been made. Yet. (source)

Another Basque rider in the news is Pedro Horrillo. The Rabobank rider suffered a horrific crash at the Giro d'Italia in mid-May. Despite initial fears that he may never ride again, Horrillo has been gently easing his way back into the saddle, first on a home trainer, then on a tourist bike with his young son sat in a seat on the back. On Wednesday, for the first time since the crash, Horrillo donned his Rabobank kit and headed out for a training ride. He hopes to return to racing next season.
