Phillies might take Rowand back?

From Jon Heyman's Twitter:

hearing #phillies might consider ex-phillie aaron rowand (if #sfgiants pay most of salary) or maybe magglio ordonez

I'd do this. Maybe if we're paying say, 75% of the salary, that still might be enough to free up money for a big free agent. He's due $24 million more, iirc.

McCovey Chronicles World Series Game 1 Starter

Now that we've...wait for it...MOVED ON TO THE GAWDAMN WORLD SERIES!!!!!!!!!!

Who do you start in Game 1?  Will Tim's 8th inning affect the call?  He only threw maybe 15 pitches, mostly changeups, and I believe I read that he skipped his normal bullpen session, meaning he might not really be thrown off by the extra work and shortened rest.  But as nice as it would be to match aces with Cliff Lee, Cain would be ready to go, and Tim has usually shown a propensity to pitch better with an extra day or two of rest.

Poll attached.  I voted Cain.  Either way the two of them are getting two starts (I don't even consider going 1/4/7 with Tim) and I like the idea of an extra day for Timmy.

McCovey Chronicles OT: Sabermetrics class

Dear McCoven,

I am a pretty amateur sabermetrician - I can look at a Fangraphs page and know what maybe 70% of the stats mean, I have an elementary grasp on most of the basic stats such as BABIP, wOBA, etc, but I've always wanted to learn more.

With that goal in mind, I recently had the idea of creating a class here at Brown for my last semester in the spring dealing with sabermetrics.  Brown's open curriculum makes it really easy to do, and I'm sure there would be a group of people on campus interested enough to participate.

Grant's last post got me thinking that I should ask some of the experts out there of your opinion - do you guys know of any books that would serve as a good "textbook," something easy to read for an average baseball fan but detailed enough to bring people up to speed over the course of a semester?  And are there any suggestions on how to structure a potential curriculum?  Figured I'd shoot it out here to help me brainstorm - like I said, this idea just recently came to me and it's still in its formative stages, so any kind of input helps.
