Who could the A's have given to get him, and would you want him,
or is he just an inferior version of Gio?
The Giants have traded Jonathan Sanchez for Melky Cabrera.
MLB MLBGrant doesn't seem to like it much. Would we string up Billy on this site, if he made a trade like this?
BREAKING: @Royals acquire LHPs Jonathan Sanchez and Ryan Verdugo from @SFGiants in exchange for OF Melky Cabrera.
This is a Sabean move, through and through. From Marvin Benard down past Dave Roberts, he loves trying center fielders who can't really play center field. Maybe they can! Maybe everyone's wrong about them!.
I'll work up a longer post on this right now, but for the moment, this is your official freakout thread. The best part about these are the freakouts.
If you can't get the players, steal the man, who acquired the
players.
Athletics Oakland AthleticsDan Feinstein, the Rays’ director of BB operations, has been hired by the #Athletics as their director of pro scouting/baseball development
Does this signify a change in the A's drafting philosophy? This offseason, Billy seems to be rearranging the ranks, below him. The Rays, although drafting in a higher place than the A's, have come up with a lot of talent in the draft the last few years. Whose position is he taking? I haven't seen any front office exits in the news.

Can a team improve, while losing?
We are all A's fans, and want them to be the best they can be, but will it behoove the A's to lose more? Over the past 7 or 8 years, besides 2006, the A's have been bad, but not terrible. This has led to a draft position no higher than 9th. The A's would benefit from a top 5 pick, top 3 would be optimal. Therein lies the dilemma. Can a team improve while losing? Does the experience the young players get while losing, be the same as if they were winning. The Rivercats have won almost every year they have been in existence, so we know that winning in the minors doesn't correlate to the pro's. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending which side of the stats fence you are on. There will not be a stat that can be extrapolated for the human mind, and the effect winning has on a young player. Even some former players are divided. Some will say the young player sitting on the bench of a winning team will learn better how to win and improve just by watching, compared to a evenly matched player, PLAYING, on a losing team.
Mark Ellis traded to Colorado
The A's have opened up a roster spot, maybe Chris Carter will stay. I would also like to take the time to say good bye and good luck to one of the greatest A's over the past 10 years.
Athletics Oakland Athletics #Athletics trade Mark Ellis and cash to the #Rockies for RHP Bruce Billings and a player to be named later.
Who would you like to see promoted next, and does this signify a selling spree, or just Weeks is too good to go anywhere?

DLD 6/3/11 Sabean please shut up.
Brian Sabean, Gm of the World Champion, and "loveable" SF Giants went on the Ralph and Tom show, and shows his intelligence.
Giants general manager Brian Sabean on Thursday tore into Scott Cousins of the Florida Marlins for his devastating hit on Buster Posey, saying the Giants will have a "long memory" of the play and everyone in the organization will be happy if Cousins is through as a major-league player.

There's no obvious replacement for Barton in the system, but the hard-hitting River Cats (stats) have several strong candidates at 2B and 3B, including Jemile Weeks, newly acquired Scott Sizemore and the rehabbing Adam Rosales. Among outfielders, Jai Miller is having an excellent season at Sacramento and Jermaine Mitchell's numbers in Midland are amazing.

I like stats, but I love baseball.
Some people may read the title, and think this is going to bash stats. Hell most people won't read it at all. I actually want to bridge the gap for the stat people, and the non staters. I have been on AN, for about 3-4 years, and the amount of stats have seemed to triple, even since then. Also, since I feel I have earned a modicum of respect, from my conversations, and arguments, and quips with the fine people of this site. I can write without being called a troll, or did I just wait until now, to show my trolliness?
I have been an A's fan all my life that I can remember. My great grandmother, RIP, would take me to games as a child, and into my teenage years. My favorite player was Dwayne Murphy. He is the reason 21 is my favorite number. Him and Cliff Branch. I loved his violent uppercut swing. He would swing so hard, his batting helmet came off many a time. It could have also been the afro, the helmet didn't fit well enough. Watching him sprint to the centerfield wall back to the infield, hat straight up in the air, held on by nothing but the sunglasses strap. Pure fun baseball. Stats now would probably tell you, he wasn't a very good player. I am smart enough to understand the formulas for most stats, and the reasoning behind them. It is just sometimes fun to remember when you could care less about the stats, just if your team, won or lost. I used to love math, and analytical equations, hell I aced precalc in the 7th grade, but a high school track accident seemed to scramble my brain and things didn't calculate as well after, but after landing on your head from over 6 feet in the air, hearing your mother say she is going to knock your head off, just rang rather hollow. Or was my head just still ringing.
All this was just to say, most of the things people say, or complain about are just opinions, and no stat, anyone states, will change the opinion. When you say, hey idiot, this stat proves you are wrong. You are not going to change a persons opinion, and everyone has there right to them. I used to really love this site, but it seems that stats, have overtaken everyones love for the game. I just want to get back to baseball, one team wins, one team loses, and Dwayne Murphy was the best player ever.
Basically I just want to enjoy A's baseball with intelligent people, and have a site I want to come back to, without every thread being a 1500 comment bar brawl.

DLD 5/24/10 I just wanted to get this link in
It is a busy day for me, but I wanted to get a link posted, so I will create a makeshift DLD.
Who said the A's can't draft?
A's, D-backs, Red Sox, Nats and Phils have fared wellWho've been the best drafters of the decade?
Kubota's point about quick-to-the-big-leauges drafting limiting the number of impact players seems to have some validity. For much of the decade, the A's have been a very college-heavy team in the Draft. As a result, they've gotten many players up to the Majors but have just the three Rookies of the Year, one All-Star (Bailey) and one Silver Slugger (Andre Ethier, with the Dodgers) from the 10 years of drafting. There also is some pragmatism that comes into play.
Oh yeah, the A's swept some team in Orange and Black
The Giants moved Andres Torres into the leadoff spot and dropped Aaron Rowand to No. 6 on Sunday in hopes of breathing life into a sputtering offense. Then they were shut out for the second consecutive time, 3-0, and swept by the A's in the three-game series at the Coliseum.

DLD 5/14/09- A Voice in the Bay??
The A's radio Flag station is changing to all sports, starting with syndicated shows. I wonder if in the future, they will have local shows, and an actual morning show, so we can hear A's centric radio, instead of the Murph and Mac giants show.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/05/14/SPB817K94C.DTL
The A's radio channel, KTRB 860, is going all-sports Monday. The station will have syndicated shows on the air whenever the A's are not, beginning with "Todd & Tyler's Radio Empire" from 6-10 a.m. weekdays

DLD 1/19/09 One Year Later
Last year at this time, I reflected on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, in this diary.
http://www.athleticsnation.com/2008/1/21/12222/6703
It has been a year since I wrote that , and since then we have reached another milestone in American History. Barack Obama is on the verge( see it does have Oakland A's references) of making the history, that Dr. King fought for and preached about. It instills the pride, that I feel, and try to portray to my son, and the younger generation of African American youth.
Well, I will leave it at that, and get back to the baseball.
A player. who's name always came up with trades with the A's has been sent to Baltimore.
The Chicago Cubs finally lost patience with former prized prospect Felix Pie, trading the outfielder to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday for left-hander Garrett Olson and minor league pitcher Henry Williamson.

Cole Hamels signs extension
Cole Hamels has about everything an ace pitcher could want after only three years in the major leagues.
The Phillies left-hander was the MVP of the World Series, he's earned a reputation as a big-game pitcher, he's been an All-Star and he's married to a former Playboy playmate.http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2009/01/17/sports/s152134S61.DTLWhile the Phillies partied with a parade, Hamels planned a low-key celebration.
Now, Hamels has a hefty three-year, $20.5 million contract to go with the championship he's still savoring.

Are we the Yankees, lite?
This is a little tongue in cheek, but I haven't written in a while, and what the hell, it's not like we have anything A's related to talk about.
When the Yankees signed the BIG THR$$, everyone was in an uproar. The Yankess just buy everything, never grow there own talent, blah, blah, blah. Now turn your attention to the A's and the 25, hell even the 40 man roster, and you will see the same thing, just a a sligtly less expensive manner. The potential signing of Cabrera, will leave the A's starting lineup, with 3Home Grown players, unless you count Giambi, that is semantical, he left and came back. The starting rotation has noone the A's have drafted, and Casilla is the last of the bullpen as well, well Braden too, if he makes it. We all know, the A's had a bad 5 or 6 year drafting window, where the higher picks never made the impact they might have wanted, but what is the difference between what the A's are doing, and what the Yankees do? The A's have 14 home grown players on the 40 man roster.
http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=oak
Furcal looking for homes in the Bay Area, and Nick Johnson to relocate too?
Furcal visited A's officials at the Oakland Coliseum, toured communities where he might live and had a two-hour lunch with A's general manager Billy Beane.
The A's have yet to make Furcal a formal offer, sources say, but the two sides expect to speak again Wednesday and possibly discuss financial terms.
Also from Rosenthal, is this little tidbit:
Beane might not stop with Holliday and Furcal. The A's have requested and received the medical records of Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson, who underwent season-ending wrist surgery last June.
The teams have yet to discuss a trade, and Johnson, 30, might not be ready for Opening Day. But the A's long have coveted his on-base skills, and could pursue him as an alternative to Daric Barton at first base.
My only problem, is the wrist is supposedly what started Barton's downturn from last year.

Royals are Really Cookoo.
The Royals gave up a promising bullpen arm for the enigmatic, for some reason always wanted, Coco Crisp. The Royals sent Ramon Ramirez to the Red Sox.
The Kansas City Royals picked up the leadoff hitter they had been seeking on Wednesday, acquiring center fielder Coco Crisp from the Boston Red Sox for reliever Ramon Ramirez.
The Royals got Ramirez in a trade with Colorado before last season, so impressed with his stuff that they projected him to be their closer.
With a fastball that reaches the mid-90s, Ramirez is a power pitcher who seems suited for the late innings. He was one of the primary setup men for closer Joakim Soria and flourished in that spot, going 3-2 with a 2.64 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings
DLD 9/9/08 Good bye Mike Sweeney
According to Susan Slusser, the A's have released Mike Sweeney. This must mean they needed the 40 man spot for someone. I wonder if Jeff Baisley will be making his major league debut in Detroit.
Mike Sweeney came to Oakland last spring to be a right-handed DH and possibly a key part of the A's puzzle. But bad knees did him in and the A's puzzle never came together. Now Sweeney is being released.
A's assistant general manager David Forst confirmed the transaction to The Chronicle's Susan Slusser today.

DLD 8/27/08 So you think AN has been weird?
Some have recently commented, that AN has been a little weird lately. Well let's see if we are more or less weird than the rest of the world. Let's see what the weirdest piece we can come up with today. The weirdness of the world will bring out the best and brightest of AN, and bring the fun back, that we have been missing.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Police in Wisconsin say a woman celebrated her birthday by helping her teenage son rob two gas stations. Officers in the Milwaukee suburb of Greenfield say the 37-year-old woman acted as the getaway driver while her 17-year-old son robbed the stations at gunpoint.
And from the Baseball world, the weird in the sense, that only Scott Boras could do this.
Pirates' deal with Pedro Alvarez in jeopardy
The Pirates' deal with first-round draft pick Pedro Alvarez appeared to be in jeopardy today, with the Pirates issuing a statement saying that Alvarez's agent, Scott Boras, has said Alvarez will not sign the contract agreed to on Aug. 15.
Of course we can put other links, and A's related links, but they are quite boring right now.

Shockey finally wore out his welcome
The NY Giants have agreed to trade Jeremy Shockey to the Saints for a 2nd and 5th rounder.
Sean Payton's persistence finally won out. The New Orleans Saints acquired Jeremy Shockey for a second- and a fifth-round draft pick in 2009, a source confirmed Monday. The Saints had been trying since February to acquire the disgruntled New York Giants tight end. First, they offered a second-round pick. Before the draft, they increased the offer to a second- and a fifth-round draft choice, but the Giants felt he was too valuable to lose until a few days before the start of their training camp.
Right off the bat
While all the bay area media is wondering what Beane is doing, and why would fans remain interested in the A's team, there is one man in the Bay Area media who gets it. Although Marty Lurie, does the show preceeding the A's pregame show, I am not sure if he is actually a paid Athletic employee. If he is, then he is towing the company line, but either way, he has the most level headed opinion, in his article in the Oakland Tribune, today.
The front office has a plan. An entirely new team is being crafted in Oakland. The plan is an all-out youth movement. There is little reason to believe more seasoned players will be sought until the young players establish exactly who they are. Why trade for a center fielder if Gonzalez will be a star middle outfielder in three years? Why bring in a new catcher if Kurt Suzuki will make the grade in the next two years. Why trade for more starting pitching if Eveland, Smith and Gallagher will be the new big three?
When will this new team achieve the consistency necessary to become a winning ballclub?
Good question.
If and when this core group becomes legitimate major leaguers, the A's must be ready to add the veteran players to lead the way. These young players will take the fans on a roller coaster ride each day until they gain the necessary experience it takes to be a winning team.
Get ready! Oakland's all-out youth movement brings great hope for the future, but it will also bring many sleepless nights for all those who follow the fortunes of this club, unless some impact veteran players are brought in simultaneously to ease the transition to a roster dominated by first- and second-year players.

DLD 7/16/08 Just for the Hell of it.
Anderson and Cahill make the US Olympic team
addition to LaPorta, Strasburg, Rasmus, and Stevens, the Olympic Team also features five other USA Baseball alumni: Oakland Athletics left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson (Midland, Tex.; 2005 18U, 2004 16U), Baltimore Orioles right-handed pitcher Jake Arietta (Farmington, Mo.; 2006 National), Florida Marlins outfielder John Gall (Stanford, Calif.; 1998-99 National), Texas Rangers catcher Taylor Teagarden (Dallas, Tex.; 2004 National), and Colorado Rockies right-handed pitcher Casey Weathers (Elk Grove, Calif.; 2006 National).
LaPorta, Anderson, Arietta, Teagarden and Weathers were also members of the 2008 XM Future Stars USA Team during Major League Baseball's All-Star weekend. The game, which saw the U.S. fall to the World Team 3-0, acted as an Olympic Trials event for Johnson and his staff. Trevor Cahill (Oceanside, Calif.), Jason Donald (Fresno, Calif.), Dexter Fowler (Atlanta, Ga.) and Clayton Richard (Lafayette, Ind.) were also members of the Futures Team who are on the Olympic roster.

DLD 7/8/08 Tuesday
Jemile Weeks is close to signing, and Inoa has made more than Duke.
Weeks likely to sign today: The A's are close to coming to terms with their top pick (12th overall) in the June draft, University of Miami second baseman Jemile Weeks, and they could announce that he has signed as soon as today, according to several sources.
Weeks, who is the younger brother of Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks, will get a signing bonus in the $2 million range.
Duchscherer, 30, has been playing professional baseball since he was 18 and he has not had a contract of more than one year. He noted that 16-year-old Dominican right-hander Michael Inoa, who got a $4.25 million bonus from Oakland last week, "has already made more than I have in my whole career. I'm not complaining, obviously, but the security (of a multiyear deal) would be nice."

DLD 6/26/08 Is choking your GM, the new undervalued market commodity?
Shawn Chacon was suspended by the Astros for assaulting the GM.
Astros pitcher Shawn Chacon was suspended indefinitely by the team Wednesday for insubordination after reportedly grabbing general manager Ed Wade by the neck and throwing him to the ground.
Chacon, upset after getting demoted to the bullpen over the weekend, told the Houston Chronicle this problem began when Wade saw him in the dining room before the game against Texas. Wade wanted to meet with Chacon in manager Cecil Cooper's office, the pitcher said.
![]()
Chacon
"I sat down to eat and Ed Wade came to me and very sternly said, 'You need to come with me to the office,'" Chacon said. "I said, 'For what?' I said, 'I don't want to go to the office with you and Cooper.' And I said, 'You can tell me whatever you got to tell me right here.' He's like, 'Oh, you want me to tell you right here?' And I said, 'Yeah.' I'm not yelling. I'm calm."

I know this isn't baseball related, but as a Raider fan, I hope Javon Walker gets help to deal with his problems. It is the professional athlete ego thing, to not seek, or accept help
Friends offer counsel, support -- if Walker decides he wants it
In the HBO interview, Walker said there was a melee at a Denver nightclub before the shooting death of Williams that escalated when fellow Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall and his cousin were spraying champagne. Walker, who was known to go to Vegas often on the team's off days in 2006, went to Las Vegas and was seen frequenting nightclubs during the weekend of Williams' funeral. Nearly every other member of the Broncos' organization attended the heart-breaking service in Williams' hometown of Fort Worth, Texas.
Walker was roundly criticized for the action, but many in the Denver organization supported him, saying he needed to handle the situation his way.
Rosalind Williams, who lost her only child in the limousine, said she wasn't upset with Walker for not going to the service. Williams, who has built a relationship with Walker since the tragedy, cringes at the thought that Walker went to Las Vegas this month. Still, she said it all makes sense.

DLD 6/16/08 SWEEP, IRON, and KIDNAP
SWEEP
Once Again, A's Sweep Giants
The cross-bay rivalry between the A's and Giants is turning ever more mismatched.
Oakland finished a three-game sweep at AT&T Park by collecting a 5-3 victory Sunday. That gives the A's six consecutive wins - and two straight series sweeps at AT&T - over the Giants. The A's allowed the Giants four runs in the three games, and Oakland has taken 14 of the past 18 in the regular-season series.
Overall, Oakland leads the series 37-28, and that doesn't include the sweep of the Giants in the 1989 World Series.

Rules Question, or interpretaion of ruling.
There is no DLD for the day, so I will waste your time with a question. The Cleveland Indians performed a triple steal. Now I have an issue with this being ruled a stolen base, and even more wondering 1) Why would you do the 3rd to 1st with the bases loaded down by 5 runs, and 2) Why in the hell would the runner on 1st get picked off, he wasn't going anywhere. In this instance, it seems like it should be a fielders choice. Why would you need to get in a pickle, run the picked off runner to 2nd base, there is already a runner there, so someone would be out. Stupidity abound.
With Ben Francisco batting, White Sox pitcher Ehren Wasserman faked a throw to third and threw to first, trapping Carroll off the bag.
When Carroll briefly got caught in pickle, Dellucci broke home. First baseman Paul Konerko's throw to catcher Toby Hall was in the dirt, allowing Dellucci to score.
Official scorer Chuck Murr credited all three runners with stolen bases.

Raiders sign new QB, same as old QB
The Raiders brought back Marques Tuiasosopo.
The Oakland Raiders have signed veteran free agent quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo. The Raiders originally selected Tuiasosopo in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. The former University of Washington star spent the 2007 season with the New York Jets.
Tuiasosopo played for the Raiders from 2001-2006 and completed 48 of 88 pass attempts for 550 yards and two touchdowns. The 6'1", 220-pound signal caller saw his most significant action in 2003 when he completed 25 pf 45 pass attempts for 324 yards in four games. He has played in 11 games with two starts during his NFL career
Stu Schweigert GONE??? Arthur Blank an idiot!!!!!
Jerry McDonald of ANG Newsgroup, is reporting that Schweigert has been notified of his release.
Stuart Schweigert, a four-year veteran who served as the poster boy for the Raiders’ tackling woes, is looking for a new employer.
Schweigert was informed of his release Thursday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported two sources confirmed.
Schweigert sat out last week’s OTA media session Thursday with what coach Lane Kiffin called a leg injury. Schweigert lost his job to Hiram Eugene last year, and the Raiders signed safety Gibril Wilson in the offseason and have moved Michael Huff to Schweigert’s old position of free safety.
Raiders Magic Number: 269
I saw him, he could barely fit through the door..... He was reportedly walking around, and winded after 3 or 4 steps..... He is well over 300lbs.....
Those are the things that were being said about JRuss, during the tumultuous offseason known as, WTFAYTA. We know know that Russell is no where near 300, and he is actually lower than the Raiders source had said which I believe was 275. Reports say he is nimble on the roll, and looking fluid. His accuracy is not where they want, but it is the first real OTA.
Russell looked the part on the practice field, rolling out of the pocket with fluid steps and firing with ease on the run. He missed as many throws as he made, but the Raiders expect accuracy to become a byproduct of knowing the routes and receivers better.
He is more confident in the huddle, Kiffin said, and more sure at the line of scrimmage. It helps Russell to know he's the starting quarterback going into the 2008 season, and not just a third-string rookie playing in-season catch-up.
"From this time to last year, 100 percent better," Russell said. "I feel a lot better and am able to move a lot better."
Everyone who needs to be a major part of the Raiders success, was present at the OTA's minus Nhamdi, and Gallery. Robert who got married, and Nhamdi hasn't signed yet. Burgess never comes, and Jordan won't be on the opening day roster. The offseason is basically over, and now we can look forward to actual on field reports, so the rumors can cease, and we can embrace the Raiders magic number of 269, what I never mentioned what 269 was?
"Right now, I'm 269," Russell said Thursday, looking every bit his declared weight. "I was never even close to 300 pounds. It was funny to me. It gave me something to laugh at.
