Great read. Didn't know amputation was a possibility at one point. Whole new level of respect for him.

Great news! Hopefully the team can translate this to a deep run this year!

Awesome story on why and how he chose Texas. A lot about his personal life and history as a coach.

Update: The scoop on what had happened:

"Buckner was visiting a woman at her apartment complex at 614 Holleman Drive East in College Station when the two of them got into an argument and Buckner was asked to leave, Sigler said.

Buckner refused to leave, and neighbors called police to report the disturbance.

The Longhorns receiver refused to get in the police car, Sigler said."

-from the Statesman

Strangely, neither pay site is reporting Buckner's arrest at this time and neither is the Statesman. It's legit though, as the link over at BC connects to the real deal Brazos County jail records. Buckner marks the fourth Longhorn football player arrested since the middle of November -- while it's not a streak as bad as the 2007 summer, it's getting close.

Ken Rucker's move into what basically amounts to a babysitting position on the team was supposed to stop some of this behavior, but this falls on the players -- the coaching staff cannot monitor them every second of every day, particularly in the off season. As a team, all the players must collectively make better decisions and some of that falls on the senior leadership.

When Brian Orakpo and Roy Miller were seniors in 2008, this type of thing wasn't happening because the players all knew better than to cross them. Who fills that void now, especially with leaders like Lamarr Houston and Colt McCoy gone? --GoBR--

Arrested for criminal trespass and resisting arrest in College Station.

WTF was he doing in College Station?

Burnt Orange Nation BCS Chaos....again?!?

When I first heard Chris Fowler on ESPN saying he will not vote Texas Number 2, I wasn't worried. I thought it was typical ESPN media hype, until I saw this.....

and Patrick Stevens(Washington times)

are voting Cincinnatti ahead of us!! And they are Harris Poll voters.....oh god. Here we go again?

ESPN recap above.

Great to see Quan do so well! Hopefully he gets some meaningful snaps at WR this season too.

USC's new D-line coach is a good friend of his father's(Derrick Kennard, former Saint's lineman).

Family connections might hurt us again, re: Darrell Scott.

Burnt Orange Nation A request to all BON members...

OU's loss comforted us a little, I know how you guys are feeling right now. Call it karma or whatever you want.

OU lost the game to Florida, but you have to give it to them, they played well and they did not portray Big 12 defenses in a bad light at all. Holding an offense that averages 40+ points a game since the Ole miss loss is an acheivement albeit a minor one in the grand scheme of things.

That being said, I would appreciate if all BON Longhorn fans do not engage in name-calling/ribbing over at CrimsonandCreamMachine. We are better than that, in fact we have class. Let the OU fans mourn over it all they want, but be a true Longhorn and wear your pride by keeping your mouth shut while at that blog. Show them that Longhorns have class, and may be then Bob Stoops will get the message.

Its just a humble request, because you all know we were better than them this year, and keeping silent is the sportsman way of saying "I told you so."

Hook Em horns!!

Burnt Orange Nation USC DC Nick Holt leaves for Washington

The Unversity of Washington announced Monday that Nick Holt is leaving USC to become the new defensive coordinator at Washington, plucked away by new Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian, another former Trojans' assistant.

Nick Holt was the Defensive coordinator for the USC Trojans.

This affects Texas because Devon Kennard is considering USC and Texas.

Anybody think this will affect his decision? I think so, we know from Darell Scott that when you change position coaches, some recruits might rethink their decisions.

Burnt Orange Nation Five star recruits, overhyped?

After the whole Jamarkus Mcfarland debacle, it got me thinking as to how a player's recruit rating transfers to success at the college level.

I decided to look at all the recruits that we have signed in the past few years and try gauge what they should level they should have been playing and comparing that to actual results. Let me say, I was surprised. Heres a quick glance at my results:

Class of 2004(notable names):

Brian Orakpo: 4 stars: we all know how good he turned out although it took him 3 years to show us his potential. Future NFL draft pick.

Frank Okam: 5 stars: NFL pick, played really well at Texas. Recruit rating and college success match.

Class of 2005:

Jermichael Finley, Jamaal Charles, Quan Cosby: Excelled on the college level. 4 stars. 2 are in the NFL now.

Colt Mccoy: 3 stars: looking at his performance from the last 3 years, he deserved much more than a 3 star rating.

Roddrick Muckelroy: 3 stars: Probably our best true LB(I don't consider Sergio Kindle as a LB) this year.

Class of 2006:

Eddie Jones/Sergio Kindle: Both 5 star recruits, although I don't think their success as of date relates to their recruit rating. Sergio was MIA until this year, and Eddie Jones is on the bench.

Class of 2007:

Tray Allen/Curtis Brown: 5 stars: still have not seen much of either of them as they come off the bench most of the time. We've seen flashes though.

Earl Thomas/Blaine Irby/Malcolm Williams: 4 stars: These three have shown us a lot more than the above two.

Class of 2008:

Blake Gideon(steal of the last decade): 2 stars: Just our second 2 star recruit in the last 4 years(the other being Tyrell Higgins(DT), who I have never heard of), this guy has a lot of potential and has proved a lot more on the field than a few other 5 star recruits.

Conclusion: From a Texas perspective, it seems to me that five star recruits are just as good as four star ones. With the exception of Vince Young and Okam, I do not think there is any 5 star recruit out there that we signed in the past 4 years, that deserves the amount of hype they got at the time of their recruitment. It seems to me that 4 star recruits and 3 star ones do just as well.

That being said, here a big thank you to all the non-5 star recruits that signed with us this year.

Burnt Orange Nation McWhorter named 2008 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year

Texas associate head coach and offensive line coach Mac McWhorter has been named the 2008 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year for the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the American Football Coaches Association has announced.

Man, of all the assistant coaches that UT has, I was not expecting him to get it. That being said, its not that he doesn't deserve it.... Good job Mac!

Burnt Orange Nation Harris Poll, as bad as coaches poll

http://www.harrisinteractive.com/news/newsletters/bcsnews/HICFP_Individual_Rankings_Dec_7_2008.pdf

Bill Arnsparger UF 1, UT 6

One of the things that stares at me in the face is Bill Arnsparger who voted Texas 6th. He's a former Athletic director for the University of Florida, and was the one responsible for hiring Spurrier.

Jim Copeland

Another interesting vote is by Jim Copeland(Athletic Director for SMU...why is he in this poll?) who voted Florida 5...wtf?

There's also another interesting vote by a guy named Bobby Leach. Who is he? He voted Texas 6th as well.

Burnt Orange Nation UT Police gets it right...

UT Police gets it right. This appears on the weekly crime watch page on the university website:

DKR- TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman

Robbery: Several UT staff members, faculty, students, and Texas Ex's discovered a fraction of a percentage point had been taken and was transported across state lines. The percentage point was discovered north of the Red River at the campus of another Big 12 South University.

LOL...WOW!

Burnt Orange Nation Texas leads OU by 8 points in latest AP Poll

Texas leads OU by 8 points in latest AP Poll. This is really big because we were down by 4 votes to OKlahoma last week and now we lead by 8. Hopefully the AP Poll is indicative of how the Harris Poll will turn out. As we know already we gained 41 votes in the coaches poll and hopefully this will be enough to offset the gains Oklahoma made in the computers

Burnt Orange Nation Stephen Mcgee listed as starter for the Texas game

Stephen Mcgee has been listed as starter for the Texas-Texas A&M game.

On if he was surprised to see Stephen McGee listed as the starting QB: No, I'll expect to see both quarterbacks. Stephen has been a guy that has played outstanding football for them and he's won a lot of football games for them. I've got a lot of respect for him as a competitor. He'll play well on Thursday night. - Will Muschamp
