The Big Game
It's here, folks: Super Bowl Sunday!
Kickoff in Dallas is mere hours away, and while I'm certain that damn near every 12th Man around is rooting against the hated Stealers, I'm curious as to who you think actually wins. Green Bay is the Vegas favorite by 3. Over/under is around 45, for the gamblers. I want a good game but if Pittsburgh wins I'll be punching inanimate objects (and maybe a few animate ones).
Who raises the Lombardi trophy this year?
OT: Facial Hair!
The NYTimes had this article on Brett Keisel's beard today, and while I hate the Steelers I must give respect where respect is due. That is one hell of a beard.
The NFL Network recently counted down their top 10 NFL beards, and while I disagree with some of the list (Ed Reed lower than Shaun O'Hara?) it was worth watching for Lyle Alzado's fine tassels (thank you, Herman Melville).
Obviously this is a topic near and dear to my heart...or rather, my chin. I grow a beard every winter. Who needs a scarf?
In the interest of procrastination, I put this question to you, fellow sports fans:
Whose beard is superior? Pittsburgh Steelers DE Brett Keisel:

Or SF Giants closer Brian Wilson:

If other, please specify in the comments. This being Field Gulls, back up your argument with evidence!

There's probably no good way to do this.
Saints fans, you're good peeps. I've thoroughly enjoyed the Q&A threads we've had, on this site and on FieldGulls. I can honestly say that I was jumping and screaming like a goddamn twelve-year-old girl when you guys pulled that crazy onsides last February. Criminy, I love Drew Brees. How can ya not?
At my local Seahawks bar tonight two guys in Meachem and Colston jerseys stuck around for about an hour after the game ended. That says something about the dedication of your fanbase, and it's something that we Seahawk fans can certainly appreciate. You, the true Saints fans, have been through much more than just the past two seasons. You've been through frustrating years and much more....but you'll be back on top, probably sooner rather than later, because you've got a top-notch QB and a damn fine coach.
Good luck next season. Truly.

Beating the blitz
NO defensive coordinator Gregg Williams likes to send the house, so the 'Hawks QB should be prepared to see a lot of blitzing on Saturday. We all know Charlie's got better mobility than Matt, but does that mean that Hass would be killed by the blitz?
In part 1 of the playoffs podcast at the link above (about 34:00 in), Bill Simmons has a conversation with Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders and Schatz brings up an interesting stat: Against blitzes of 6 or more, Hasselbeck has averaged 9.5 yards per attempt this season. Against 3-5 pass rushers he's averaging 5.5 yards.
Well color me surprised.

With apologies to The Bard....
Friends, Romans, Seahawk fans, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Hasselbeck, not to praise him.
The INTs that men throw live after them;
The TDs are oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Hasselbeck. The noble John Morgan
Hath told you Hasselbeck was inaccurate:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Hasselbeck answer'd it.
Here, under leave of John Morgan and the rest--
For John Morgan is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men--
Come I to speak in Hasselbeck's funeral.
He was my friend, strong-armed and accurate to me:
But John Morgan says he was inaccurate;
And John Morgan is an honourable man.
He hath brought many victories home to Seattle
Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:
Did this in Hasselbeck seem inaccurate?
When that the poor have cried, Hasselbeck hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet John Morgan says he was inaccurate;
And John Morgan is an honourable man.
You all did see that on Qwest Field
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this inaccuracy?
Yet John Morgan says he was inaccurate;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what John Morgan spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?
O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with Hasselbeck,
And I must pause till it come back to me.

Ask the Seahawks fans
Hey there ex-division rivals! Your Kansas City Chiefs are coming up to Seattle on Sunday and since a few of you were kind enough to start a thread on our site I figured I'd return the kindness. KC is the number one rushing team, and Seattle's rush D has fallen off significantly since we lost 3 of our front 4. (One of those, DT Brandon Mebane, has since returned.) Fortunately for us 12s, Seattle plays far better at home. That said I'm still worried about what Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles can do; they're a deadly tandem. Here's hoping for a good game with no injuries!
Ask whatever questions you've got and hopefully you'll get an answer from myself or another Field Gulls regular.

Ask a Seahawk fan
Hey there CSC! I'm sure everyone is looking forward to watching the Saints stomp the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, but the Seahawks are coming to the Super Dome on Sunday. Gotta be honest, I'm worried about my team's chances. Super Bowl hangover or no, the Saints are a damn good team, and the Seahawks don't play well on the road. Hopefully it's a good game -- competitive and injury-free.
Since a few of you were kind enough to answer questions over at Field Gulls, I figured we ought to return the favor. Ask away and I (or, more likely, one of my more knowledgeable fellow Seahawk fans) will attempt to answer.

Looks like Matt will start.
He's been medically cleared and is expected to be the starter, according to the P-I.
Aaaaand let the QB controversy resume...NOW!
Peter King puts the 'Hawks at...11?
King sucks at this, as he readily admits in the first few paragraphs, but he predicts that Seattle will take the division in this early edition of his power rankings. (Of course, the requisite dig at the division's strength starts things off.)
Not to rain on the parade...
...but SI's Andrew Perloff has the Seahawks picking at the top of next year's draft. (Sorry, Locker fans, he's got us going with Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett instead.)
Draft parties?
Hey all, figured I'd toss this up for anyone who's interested in watching the draft tonight (well, the first round) with a group of fellow 'Hawks fans. If you're in NYC and aren't going to the event itself, shoot me an e-mail at TheByron@gmail.com if you want to come meet up with some of us at a bar! Residents of other cities, fire away in the comments. Get together, drink a cold one, watch Q/PM shape our team's future.
Mora to coach at Bellevue High School
Many of you have probably seen this by now, but for those who haven't: Jim Mora Jr. will be joining the Bellevue High coaching staff in a yet-to-be-determined capacity.
"Nuclear Cabbage"?
The uni post that lemonverbana put up made me curious...now that a little time has passed, what do people think of the bright green alternate jerseys?

Sando says we have a new strength and conditioning coach
ESPN's Mike Sando says that USC's Chris Carlisle will replace Mike Clark as the S&C coach for the Seahawks.
Q & A with Seahawk fans
What's up, Buc 'Em readers? I'm a member of Field Gulls, SBNation's excellent blog on the Seattle Seahawks. A few of your guys were kind enough to start up a Q & A over there in anticipation of this weekend's matchup and I'm here to return the favor. Anything you want to know about this week's foe? Well then, meet me after the jump.

Tru and Wilson both have concussions.
Damn. Mora sounds confident that they'll both play though....
KC releases Bobby Engram
Not much to say, really. Bobby's 36, so KC may have been the last stop in his NFL career. Here's wishing him the best; I always liked the guy.
Hasselbeck's daughter hit by dirt bike, will be okay
6-year-old Mallory is recovering.
ESPN's Schefter says Matt has fractured rib
