$5 diamondback series tickets

hello all,

I just wanted to let you all know (if anyone is still interested in watching the Cards), that there are discount tickets to the entire diamondbacks series next week (9/22-9/25). All the seats are $5, although I think the best seats you can get for this price are the outfield field boxes (which are usually $35). I bought tickets to the game Tuesday in section 170, so I'm pretty happy with those.

To get the seats, go to stlcardinals.com/McDonalds promo code: BIGMAC. The promo code is good for all four games.

I just wanted to let you all know.

Have a good one,

Jen

NOTE: Fixed the typo. Sorry for any annoying pop ups that happened when I misspelled the website the first time...

I will now go wallow in my own stupidity.

But hey, at least I got $5 field boxes to look forward to.

<!--StartFragment-->

Hey guys,

I went to the game last night (6 rows behind home plate), and I must admit, the calls by the home plate umpire were downright awful. That game was one of the most depressing I have ever witnessed in person. I came home last night and read the overflow thread, as I usually do if I’m not on to read it live. I was saddened by the general tone of the thread, and people calling for TLR’s head. I know that the past series was really frustrating, and that winning is a lot more fun than losing, but must we forget that we are Cardinals fans? We’ve been all but spoiled the past few years, winning 5 NL pennants since 1982. Heck, considering Cub’s fans (not that I usually do that), count yourself lucky if you can remember the last time your team won a world series.

At the time of writing, our record is 57-47. We are still 10 games above .500. How many of you expected that, of this team, in April? I thought that this was going to be a rebuilding year, and that we would just brave it, looking towards next year, excited about any win we could muster. What happened to that? I guess we were all spoiled by the great start our gritty team was able to make, and for the most part, sustain.

Our coaching staff has taken a team that shouldn’t have done much, and made them competitive. The last four games were against one of the best teams we will face again this season, and in each of those four games we were competitive. We were competitive against Cy Young Sabathia, and 3 time all-star Ben Sheets. Our club has its problems, but throwing LaRussa (a guy who is the 3rd winningist manager in baseball history) under the bus because of a few bad games, and some bad decisions is kind of silly. He isn’t doing this for the money anymore, and I for one, don’t want to see him go.

“The game is better than all of us.” -TLR

Betting the farm

Okay, let me start this off by saying, I have been a devoted cards fan for 23 years , but until I began reading this blog, I didn't know much about the minor league.

Now that I have know more about the AAA team, I have some questions that I pose to you, the intelligent VEB readers that you are, hoping that I can gain some insight.

1. When we "sign" a minors player, do they usually come from college/high school/walk on?

2. What does a "signing" entail? If we write a contract with a minor league player, how much do they usually cost, and how long are they usually for?

3. How do we ensure that our minor players stay with the Cardinals after their minor league contracts are up?

4. Do minor league players usually have other jobs, or is that their main source of income?

5. Do players ever come directly out of college/wherever/ to start in the MLB without ever seeing a game in the minors?

Thank you for any info you may have. I know that some of these questions may seem elementary, but I suppose you have to learn the basics before you can get any farther. Thanks again!

Pujols and Berkman in ASG

After looking at the starting lineups for the all star game tonight, I thought it was strange that Pujols is batting 4th behind Berkman. Pujols' batting average and OBP are higher than Berkman (.350 and .466 vs. .347 and .443) while Berkman's slugging percentage is higher than Pujols' (.608 vs. .653). It seems to me that since Pujols is more likely to get on base, and Berkman is more likely to hit it out of the park, it makes sense to put Pujols in front of Berkman. Any thoughts as to why Pujols is batting 4th?

Goal:

To watch the Cardinals win the game, or to watch them lose, but the pain numbed due to alcohol poisoning.

10. A shot for any balk by a Cards pitcher.

11. If Oquendo throws the stop sign, and the player runs through, drink until he gets home.

12. A shot every time Franklin comes out of the bullpen.

13. A shot of whisky, every time Larue is at bat.

Game ends at end of play.

Hopefully you guys enjoy this. I have a feeling this may hurt in the morning.

-Jen

<!--EndFragment-->

bjork 24's rules:

Per request, a quick fanpost offering a few rudimentary rules for a 2008 Cardinals Drinking Game. This is just a primer, so please feel free to chime in with more rules in the comments. It's also my first fanpost, so here's hoping I don't screw it up too badly.

Since not everyone has the same tolerance for alcohol, we'll break the drink triggers into 3 categories: heavy drinkers (LaRue), lightweights (Miles), and teetotalers (Pujols). Also, keeping with the fine tradition set in the game threads, one shot of liquor is equivalent to one "Franklin." Let's begin!

Heavy drinkers should take a Franklin every time:

Barton loses his hat and/or helmet

Schumaker unfastens and then refastens his batting gloves

Pujols takes a walk

Ryan licks his sleeves

Duncan pops out in foul territory

Ankiel makes a highlight-worthy catch

We strand a runner (one Franklin for each LOB)

Lightweights should take a Franklin every time:

Glaus hits a homerun

Yadi throws out a baserunner trying to steal

K-Mac gets a save

Teetotalers should take a Franklin every time:

LaRue hits a grand slam

Reyes is called back up and throws a complete game

LaRussa hugs Ryan

It was a lot easier to come up with the heavy drinker rules. What rules do you guys think we should add?
