"A multiyear deal is certainly possible for the 33-year-old Guthrie. But in some ways he reminds me of Joe Saunders, who was selected ten spots before Guthrie in the first round of the 2002 draft. Both are innings eaters who limit walks, don’t induce many strikeouts and allow lots of hits. The combination generally leads to substantial salaries through arbitration, but it doesn’t do as well in free agency. Saunders, for example, signed a one-year, $6MM contract with Arizona last offseason. I expect Guthrie to sign a contract in that range following his up and down 2012 campaign." Ben Nicholson-Smith, MLB Trade Rumors, on Jeremy Guthrie's potential value in free agency this coming offseason. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/09/free-agent-stock-watch-jeremy-guthrie.html.

Non-Tender Candidate: Luke Hochevar

"Hochevar would likely be in line for a one-year deal with a low base salary and some performance-based incentives from his new club."

Royals Offseason: Arbitration Candidates

PTP's David Lesky looks at the cost and the merits of bringing back Paulino, Hochevar, Wood, Getz, Pena and Bourgeois.

Chen, Pena use intellect, creativity to beat DET

13

"Pena wants to know what worked and what didn’t. He begins to form a game plan. How will they approach each Detroit hitter? What will they do the first, second or third time through the order? Brayan then gets together with Jason Kendall and goes over the plan to see whether Jason has any advice. Next, Pena presents the plan to Bruce and pitching coach Dave Eiland. And finally, they present the game plan to the Detroit Tigers at 7:10 p.m."

Rany talks payroll and the MLB TV rights windfall

18

"If they could afford a payroll between $70 and $75 million in 2009 and 2010 without losing money – and if they had lost money, trust me, we’d have heard about it – their breakeven number by 2014 has to be at least $90 million, and probably around $100 million. Remember, not only are the Royals’ share of national revenues going up by somewhere around $30 million, but their player development costs have dropped by almost $10 million."

Mellinger: The Royals are close to being good...honestly!

72

"Dayton Moore and his assistants put together the rotation, signed Francoeur to an extension, and made the Sanchez trade. But it is worth noting that if just one thing in that triumvirate of stink turned out even average, the Royals would be close to .500 —what most reasonable minds expected before the season."

Grantland: The Dodgers Make it Rain

After the LAD-BOS megadeal, Jonah Keri looks at the luxury tax and competitive balance.

Dutton: Rotation’s recent improvement won’t deter upgrade efforts

31

"I keep hearing we’ve got to get a one or a two," [Royals GM Dayton Moore] said. "Well, that’s great, but there aren’t many out there. I want pitchers who are going to give us innings and have the mind-set of a No. 1." "We're going to have to trade guys to teams that are willing to give up pitching," Moore said. "Do we give up substantial pieces off our major-league club and in our farm system for guys we might only have for a year or two?"

Fangraphs: Klaasen on Jake Westbrook's Contract Extension

34

"The new contract is reportedly a one-year, $8.75 million contract for 2013 with a superfluous mutual option worth $9.5 million for 2014 with a $1 million buyout." Westbrook, who turns 35 next month, has a career 4.26 ERA and 4.12 FIP. If you're looking at what Jeremy Guthrie (turns 34 in April, career 4.33 ERA, 4.76 FIP) might be worth if the Royals try to keep him, this could be an indication.

NY Daily News: Team Melky Faked Website to Avoid Suspension

"The idea, apparently, was to lay a trail of digital breadcrumbs suggesting Cabrera had ordered a supplement that ended up causing the positive test, and to rely on a clause in the collectively bargained drug program that allows a player who has tested positive to attempt to prove he ingested a banned substance through no fault of his own."

Jonah Keri's MLB Power Rankings

19

"25. Kansas City Royals, 49-65 (475 RS, 531 RA) (last week: 27) The Royals rank dead last in the American League in walks this season. Last year, they ranked 12th. The year before that, ninth. The year before that, 13th. The year before that, last. The year before that, 13th. The year before that, 11th. The year before that, 12th. The year before that, 13th. We could keep going. If you're looking for both a symptom and a cause of the Royals' streak of one above-.500 season in 18 years, employing a roster full of Yuniesky Betancourts every year is a pretty good place to start."

Dutton: Royals May Look to Bullpen for Rotation Options

45

"It’s [sic] doesn’t matter," Crow said. "Just as long as I don’t go to Triple-A." "Ever since they moved me they moved me to the bullpen," Herrera said, "I haven’t thrown more than two innings. So I really don’t know how to answer that."

MLBTR: Jair Jurrjens a Non-Tender Candidate

28

"He projects to earn $5.9 million in 2013 if he continues pitching at the MLB level." "There could be a team looking for pitching -- the Royals, Rockies, Astros or Twins, perhaps -- that would be willing to take a chance on a 26-year-old one year removed from an All-Star season." Credit goes to EspeciallyK for mentioning the article in another thread, and discredit as well for the resulting dread of a DM overpay.

Tim (NY) What's going on with Hosmer? Klaw (1:42 PM) Got his hands very high and tight, looks like it's affecting his ability to really square the ball up, to get maximum force into contact. I'm not certain that's the problem but it does fit. Keith Law, ESPN, from a chat on Thursday, 8/2/2012 http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/44743

Heyman: Notes on Hamels (and Greinke)

22
"An offer of $120 million over five years, which was the very deal Cliff Lee signed with the Phillies, was said by one person with Phillies ties to be their logical offer, though two management people on other teams said they believed they may have to go to something closer to Johan Santana's $137.5-million, six-year deal, or even more, to have a realistic chance at a quick deal." "The Brewers are believed willing to offer their star free-agent-to-be pitcher Zack Greinke $100 million over five years, though there's nothing to indicate he may take that."
