Colorado Springs: W 4-2 (49-33, 1st place)

Alan Johnson allowed just two runs in 5.2 innings, and the Sky Sox bullpen pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to allow the Springs to hold on for the victory. The pitching staff held Portland to just four hits. Dan Ortmeier led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Mike McCoy was also instrumental in the victory, as he was 2-for-2 with 2 walks and also scored 2 runs.

Tulsa: W 5-0 (4-4, 1.0 GB)

Esmil Rogers turned in yet another terrific start, going 7 innings and allowing no runs on just 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 8. Al Alburquerque, in his first appearance in the Rockies organization since being acquired from the Cubs in the Jeff Baker trade, pitched a scoreless 8th, despite allowing a walk, to earn his first hold. Edgmer Escalona held serve in the ninth, as he as become accustomed to doing. Darin Holcomb had 3 hits for the Drillers, while Anthony Jackson (who also had 3 RBI), Mike Paulk, and Daniel Mayora added 2 hits apiece.

Modesto: W 5-4 (4-6, 3.0 GB)

Joey Williamson improved to 9-0 despite not having the greatest outing, as he allowed 3 runs on 6 hits (and 3 walks) in 5 innings. He was helped out immensely by the Nuts' offense, who scored four times in the first inning. Jason Van Kooten hit a three-run home run in that first inning, and Charlie Blackmon added 3 hits for Modesto. Brian Rike picked up a couple of hits as well, and Craig Baker was the highlight of the bullpen as he struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 21st save.

Asheville: L 4-14 (5-4, 1.5 GB)

Robinson Fabian was smacked around for 7 runs on 9 hits in just two innings, and the bullpen didn't exactly stop the bleeding, as Alan Deratt allowed 6 runs on 6 hits in three innings. Ryan Piesel homered, and catcher Beau Seabury had a couple of hits for the Tourists, but that was about it.

Tri-City: L 3-4 (12-3, 1st place)

The Dust Devils suffered a rare loss, this one in walk-off fashion as Rhett Ballard allowed a game-deciding single. Starting pitcher Rob Scahill allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in 4 innings. Scott Beerer went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer to ~~raise~~ lower his average to .588 on his 27th birthday.

Casper: L 7-14 (2-8, 6.0 GB)

Not a lot of positives in this one for the Ghosts, especially from a pitching standpoint - though Chad Rose DID strike out 6 batters in 2.1 innings (despite allowing a couple of runs). Starting pitcher Juan Gonzalez was lit up for 7 runs on 7 hits in 4.1 innings. He walked 3 and struck out only one. Offensively, Chad Jacobsen hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, while Angelys Nina and Jeffrey Squier each added two hits.

All-Star Selection Show set for Sunday | MLB.com: News
The MLB All-Star selection show will be televised tomorrow afternoon from 11-12 PM Mountain time. Which Rockies players do you guys think will make the team? My predictions (taking into account potential injury situations) are Jason Marquis, Huston Street, and Brad Hawpe. Chris Iannetta, Troy Tulowitzki, and Todd Helton are possiblities as well. Ubaldo doesn't have "enough wins," but maybe Aaron Cook will get some consideration.

Staying with the All-Star theme, Jay Jaffe with Baseball Prospectus looks at possible All-Star snubs and includes Chris Iannetta on his list. Brian McCann is pretty much a lock, and Yadier Molina leads the fan voting. Iannetta, however, is better offensively than any other catcher in the NL not named McCann. He's no slouch defensively, either. But, maybe I'm just a homer...

Ordeal over, Torrealba could start on Sunday - The Denver Post
The article mentions that Yorvit Torrealba could (and likely will) start on Sunday. Also, there is a nugget regarding Manuel Corpas' attempted return from injury. He has been throwing from 120 feet and feels no pain, so he could end up with Tulsa on a rehab assignment next week.

In another bit about a former Rockie, Matt Herges was designated for assignment by Cleveland last night. He was fairly effective for the Indians, posting a 3.55 ERA in 21 games. He actually allowed less hits than innings pitched, as well.

Russ mentioned Aroldis Chapman in the Rockpile yesterday. He's probably right in saying that the Rox probably won't be in any negotiations with the guy - and that's especially acceptable now, given that Jack Curry with the New York Times reported that Chapman may actually be 26, not 21 (as originally advertised).

Behind a masterful performance by Jason Marquis, the Rockies defeated the Dodgers in LA for the first time this season. Marquis, who became the NL's first 10-game winner of 2009, turned in a two-hit shutout in just 86 pitches over 2 hours and 26 minutes against a lineup that has repeatedly given the Rockies problems this season. That lineup, however, has not been problematic for Marquis, who improved to 2-0 against the division leaders this season. He was able to keep the Dodgers off-balance tonight, inducing 17 ground outs while recording three strikeouts.

Brad Hawpe hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to get the Rockies on the board, but Chad Billingsley was able to bounce back and keep the Rockies off the board for the next couple of innings. However, in the top of the seventh, Brad Hawpe led off with a single, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and made it to third on a productive out by Troy Tulowitzki. Ian Stewart was intentionally walked, and after a Carlos Gonzalez strikeout (one of three in the game), Chris Iannetta was able to draw a walk after falling behind 0-2. That brought up Jason Marquis, who served a dish of cold revenge to the Dodgers with a two-run single to give the Rox a 3-0 lead which they would not relinquish.

Rock Solid: Jason Marquis (9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K; 1-for-3, 2 RBI) and Brad Hawpe (2-for-3, HR, RBI, 2 R)

Hiding Under a Rock: Carlos Gonzalez (0-for-4, 3 K) and Seth Smith (0-for-4, 2 K)

The win was the 19th this month for the Rockies' starting pitchers - the most in any single month in the NL since the 1985 New York Mets. Awesome.

Colorado Springs: W 8-3 (44-31)

Franklin Morales had a stellar outing for the Sky Sox, going six strong innings and striking out four while only allowing one run. The double-M crew (Mike McCoy, Matt Miller, and Matt Murton) was a combined 9-for-13 with seven RBIs and four runs scored. Rehabbing Rockies Yorvit Torrealba and Ryan Speier had good nights; Torrealba singled, walked, and scored a run and Speier pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Jeff Baker had the night off.

Tulsa: L 9-0 (38-35)

The Drillers took a serious beating at home at the hands of Springfield. Only one player (Ryan Harvey) was able to reach base more than once (as he walked and singled), as the Drillers only had five hits. Keith Weiser was roughed up by the Cardinals' offense. On a positive note, though, Edgmer Escalona pitched a scoreless ninth and recorded a strikeout. I hope this guy just keeps on moving up through the system...

Modesto: W 7-6 (1-2 second half)

The Nuts scored the first three runs of this one, then promptly allowed six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Modesto was able to rally from three runs down to earn the victory as Matt Repec, Jason Van Kooten, and Wilin Rosario eached banged out three hits and a double. In addition, Van Kooten walked twice and Rosario walked once, and the three guys in the middle of the order combined to score seven runs. Two very solid pieces of the Modesto bullpen had great innings, as Craig Baker struck out the side (around a walk) in the eighth and Matthew Reynolds struck out two in the ninth to seal the deal. Reynolds is a bit old for the league, but his numbers are still impressive - he has 48 strikeouts and just 7 walks in 42 innings, and has only allowed 27 hits and 6 earned runs.

Asheville: W 5-3 (3-1 second half)

The Tourists have started the second half of the season well after experiencing a miserable first half. Parker Frazier pitched well enough in five innings to get the win - he struck out three and walked three in five innings of one-run ball. Scott Robinson and Jordan Pacheco each had two hits and an extra base hit in the game. Pacheco drove in three runs, and David Christensen plated two himself, despite going 0-for-2. Michael Marbry struck out three batters in 1.1 innings of relief.

Tri-City: L 7-2 (6-2)

Bradley McAtee walked seven batters in three innings of work as the Dust Devils lost for just the second time this season. Aaron Weatherford, however, struck out the side in the ninth inning. It will be nice to see this guy begin climbing the organizational ladder, as well, I believe. Tri-City didn't hit much, but Tim Wheeler, Kevin Clark, and Joseph Sanders each hit a double. The unstoppable Kent Matthes had a base knock in the game, as well.

Casper: L 8-6 (0-4)

The Ghosts remained winless, largely due to a bullpen hiccup in which Coty Woods and Chad Rose combined to allow six runs (five earned) on three walks and five hits in two innings of work. Angelys Nina and Brandon Whitby led the Ghosts offensively, as each player had two hits in the ballgame.

Inside the Colorado Rockies - Friedrich Has Elbow Soreness, Nothing Worse
Good news out of Modesto, as an MRI showed no structural damage to Christian Friedrich's elbow. The Rockies need to be very careful in how they use him, but also need to keep in the back of their mind that should he get healthy and return to form, he should be on the fast track to the big leagues, and needs to be prepared for it.

Garrett Atkins notched his second straight three-hit game last night - and both have been in road games against solid pitching. Hopefully he keeps improving that trade value.

The author (Travis Lay) compares the Rockies trading Holliday to the Rockies actually trading Ryan Spilborghs, as they have similar batting lines this year. Spilborghs has three less home runs, but is hitting .263/.333/.419, compared to Holliday's .274/.372/.433. Holliday wins in OBP, but based on career numbers, we can expect that Spilborghs will get better in that area as the season progresses - if he gets playing time.

A late rally by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim put an end to the Rockies' 6-game winning streak, as the Halos were able to come away with a 4-3 victory.

Things unraveled for the Rockies (37-34) in the bottom of the eighth, when Ubaldo Jimenez (6-7) walked Jeff Mathis (the ultimate thorn in the side of Jimenez) to lead off the inning. Then, Ian Stewart failed to properly play a bunt off the bat of Erick Aybar. To make matters worse, Stewart couldn't get a foot down on the bag on the next play, which was also a bunt, when Jimenez fielded a bunt from Chone Figgins and tried to force Mathis out at third. With the bases now loaded and nobody out, Bobby Abreu chased Jimenez with a two-run single that put the Angels up for good.

Troy Tulowitzki was the hero offensively for the Rockies, as he drove in all three runs, thanks to two home runs off of Sean O' Sullivan. Tulo now has 12 home runs on the year - 7 of which have come in the month of June. Todd Helton (1-2, 2 BB) and Seth Smith (1-1, BB) were factors at the plate, as well. Clint Barmes, Ian Stewart, and Carlos Gonzalez did not help the Rockies offensively, as they combined to go 0-for-13 with 6 K's.

Ex-Rockie Brian Fuentes slammed the door on the streak, as he was able to strike out Garrett Atkins and Barmes in back-to-back at bats, after allowing Chris Iannetta to reach second via a HBP and sac bunt by Ryan Spilborghs.

Ubaldo's final line was 7 IP, 7 H, 4 ER (although that seems a little high, given the circumstances), 1 BB, and 5 K.

The Rockies (37-33) will go for their seventh straight victory tonight against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Ubaldo Jimenez will take the mound tonight for Colorado. In two June road starts, he is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 13 K's in 14 IP. In fact, Ubaldo has been pretty darn good everywhere all season in games against teams that are not named the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hopefully, this "Los Angeles" team does not give him the same trouble.

When Colorado and the LA Angels last met in 2006, Jose Mesa blew the first game of the series, but the Rox bounced back to take the next two and stayed above .500 for the season. (via mlbnetwork.mlb.com)

Tonight marks the first time since June of 2006 that the Rockies and Angels have squared off. Going into that series, the Rockies had just come off a 4-2 homestand that saw them take 2 out of 3 from the A's and Rangers. They stood at 38-37 overall. Los Angeles, meanwhile, had yet to hit their stride, as they were just 34-41. Here's a breakdown of what was to come:

Game 1: Jason Jennings vs. John Lackey (L 5-4)

Jason Jennings was cruising along through seven innings, not having allowed a run while striking out five. However, he gave up a lead off single to Maicer Izturis and walked Adam Kennedy, then was removed from the game in favor of Jose Mesa. Mesa promptly gave up two singles, an intentional walk, and a double - with a run-scoring groundout sandwiched in between - and the Rockies suddenly found themselves down 5-3. Jorge Piedra hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth off of Francisco Rodriguez, but the Rockies weren't able to get anything else. Piedra, Brad Hawpe (2-for-4 with an RBI), and Todd Helton (HR, 2 RBIs) led the Rockies offensively.

Game 2: Aaron Cook vs. Jeff Weaver (W 12-4)

Jeff Weaver continued his struggles, as the Rox pounded him for six runs and nine hits in two innings, and he fell to 3-10 on the year. Meanwhile, Aaron Cook posted a 20:6 groundball-to-flyball ratio, and earned the win with a solid seven-inning effort. Every starter in the Rockies' lineup had a hit, and everyone with the exception of JD Closser had at least two hits. Garrett Atkins and Clint Barmes each drove in three runs, Matt Holliday had three hits and scored three runs, and Brad Hawpe went 2-for-5 with a homer and 2 RBIs.

Game 3: Jeff Francis vs. Ervin Santana (W 6-2)

The Rockies' offense exploded at the expense of Scot Shields in the eighth inning, after failing to breakthrough against Santana through seven frames. The damage was done on an RBI single by Garrett Atkins and a bases-clearing double off the bat of Jorge Piedra. Jeff Francis was solid for the Rox, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing 2 runs on nine hits. The bullpen won the game, though, as they held the Halos scoreless in 2.1 innings. Ramon Ramirez picked up the win (although he blew a save), and Brian Fuentes struck out two in the ninth and earned the save. Piedra, Cory Sullivan (3-for-5), and Garrett Atkins (2-for-3) paced the Colorado offense.

Let's see you win at least two out of three again, eh guys?

Sunday Pebble Report: Matt Murton continues his hitting streak, Tri-City debuts, more.

Colorado Springs: L 8-7 (39-30)

Fresno's Jesus Guzman hit an infield single off of Damian Moss in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game for the Grizzlies. Guzman was one of four baserunners allowed by Moss in just two-thirds of an inning. This came after a poor start by Jason Hirsh, in which he lasted five innings while giving up seven runs on seven hits - three of which were home runs.

Matt Murton extended his hitting streak to a Sky Sox franchise record-tying 28 games, as he went 2-for-4 with a homer. Matt Miller added a home run as well, while Murton, Eric Young, Mike McCoy, Daniel Ortmeier, Christian Colonel, and Jonathan Herrera each added two hits. Still, it was not enough for the Springs to overcome.

Tulsa: L 6-4 (36-31)

Brandon Durden was effective for 7.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out a batter, but the bullpen cost him a win, as Jarrett Grube and Adam Bright were roughed up for four runs on four hits and two walks in just two-thirds of an inning. Anthony Jackson and Darin Holcomb each had two hits, and Ryan Harvey hit his 10th home run of the season in the losing effort.

Modesto: W 7-3 (39-30)

The Nuts scored four runs in their last two sets of at-bats to break a tie that had been going on since the fourth inning. Charlie Blackmon pounded out three htis, while Rhadames Nazario and Wilin Rosario each contributed two. The bullpen, led by the nasty duo of Edgmer Escalona and Matt Reynolds, threw 4.1 innings of hitless ball to pick up starter Joey Williamson, who allowed three runs on six hits in 4+ innings.

Asheville: L 7-6 in 12 innings (26-42)

David Christensen hit his 10th home run of the season and he, along with Jordan Pacheco, James Cesario, Ryan Piesel, and Tyler Massey each had a multi-hit game, but it was not enough to give the Tourists the victory. That last part is unfortunate for Juan Ncasio, who pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits while striking out eight, as Kurt Yacko and Adam Jorgenson fell apart over the next couple of innings. They combined to give up five runs on five hits and three walks to effectively prevent Asheville from winning.

Tri-City: W 14-8 (1-0)

The Dust Devils won their first game of the 2009 season in convincing fastion over Boise. Brand new draft pick Kent Matthes (an OF taken in the fourth round out of Alabama) looked GOOD in his first pro game, as he went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a couple of runs scored. Pitcher Sheng An-Kuo pitched four innings of sub-par ball, but a couple of guys out of the bullpen were able to seal it off for Tri-City.
