I have all of the 2009 pitch f/x data in a nice and organized MySQL database and I'm in the process of acquiring 2007-2008 data,. This allows me to get access to all the data for every single player which makes it easy to get league averages for certain data points. I have a few ideas up my sleeve already but I thought it might be useful to get a collective forum going here with different thoughts and ideas on how we can use the pitch f/x data to better analyze any of the Rays pitchers and hitters. Pitch counts, league averages, hit direction, baserunners, and umpires are possible points of analysis using my database.

A Non Database Pitch f/x Database. Interested?

I know most of the writers and users who use pitch f/x data have a MySql database to gather the data. This is the best way to go to collect and organize the data and even link it to retrosheet.

However, there are some people who use pitch f/x data and are probably willing to have database, but don't know how or don't have the time to learn how or even to avoid learning the language. Through some Google earching and elbow grease I have been able to develop a relatively easy method to create a sort of "database" for the pitch f/x xml files. The method limits itself to sorting the files only by pitcher and hitter so it is ideally used only for looking at a pitcher or two at a time (unless you have the time to add more).

Limited but useful for those wanting just the data for a specific pitcher or hitter for inseason comparison or player to player comparison. Or whatever else you want.

I just wanted to post this to see if there is some interest for me to write up a series of posts to explain how to do so. If so I will likely post it sometime in September and try to have one on even getting hit location.

Bryce Harper to enroll in junior college and likely enter in the 2010 MLB draft. The Nationals are destined to get Strasburg and Harper in two straight drafts. I guess that beats Price and Beckham for us.

DRaysBay: I consider this the original Rays blog, up since 2005. This is the one to read if you like pitch f/x data from R.J. Anderson and game analysis from Tommy Rancel. There is no shortage of posts there with regular features and analysis of any breaking Rays news from six excellent writers. Their content is widely recognized by the major baseball blogs and sites out there so you know your time isn't wasted. Plus, they are man enough (or lazy) to keep part of the devil in their sites name which is a clever play of words on the original team name: Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Looks very user friendly. They have some sabermetrics now as well as minor league fielding statistics. You can sort every stat too.
