HAMSTERDAM IS FASCINATED BY GENETICS

373
Sandra-laing-young

I'm knee deep in a couple books about the origins of humans and other hominids. And while there's some fun stuff there (it's been confirmed almost everybody has Neandertal genes as pert of their genome, some populations up to 10%), it's not really as striking a picture for a Hamdam lead-in as the one above. Every great long once in a while, with the history of mixing of races (especially in racially charged slave areas), we get a "black" child born to "white" parents or vice versa. Sandra Laing is the girl in the picture, those are her biological parents in 1960s South Africa where she was expelled from her "white" school because of her completely "black" features. She had a movie made about her (SKIN) that I'm not sure many have seen, but she's the most prominent example of a rare and fascinating phenomenon.

HAMSTERDAM VISITS BRAZIL

786
11847_195273399502_2433267_n

WORLD CUP ACTION STARTS TODAY WITH BRAZIL V CROATIA @ 3PM GOD'S TIME. Of course you don't think the Brazilian World Cup spending and construction and waste and corruption is something new. But if you did, may I present the Viaduct Petrobas. A thousand feet of finished freeway in the middle of nowhere, with no access other than goat trails to a rickety wooden staircase. It's actually somewhat of a tourist attraction now. Yay Brazil! Via

HAMSTERDAM ENTERS WITHDRAWAL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r6MNi_8cT0

It's been over 8 days since the last Game of Thrones. My hands are starting to shake. Sunday, and its Red Viper-Mountain Game Of The Century can't come soon enough. Oh god, I don't know what I'm going to do when it's gone again after only two more episodes. For now, must concentrate on just getting to Sunday. One day at a time.

HAMSTERDAM DOESN'T NEED A NEW SHIRT

641
Irby_0701pho040_jpg

(h/t to commenter Dip-Shit). Does that outfit from this schoolteacher's 2012 yearbook photo look like it could be straight out of the 70s? Well, it is. And he can prove it. Because he has worn the exact same outfit for every shcool picture day for FORTY YEARS. The link below has all 40 pictures (unfortunately in slideshow format, but there's also a video). It's worth your time just to be amazed at the dedication and humor. Or if not intentional humor, the pure awesomeness. LINK

HAMSTERDAM LAMENTS THE END OF A GOOD THING

739

Like many of you, I have had DirecTV as my "cable" provider for the past several years. And as seems to be the general consensus, I've been pretty dang happy with their service. It's a bit pricey after the intro rate, like all cable carriers, but I have always had stellar service from this company that just seems to be one of the few that really cares about its customers instead of quarterly sales number calls (hi Zappos!) Well, as you may have heard, DirecTV is going to be acquired by AT&T for ~$50B, or in reality closer to ~$65B if you include the debt they're assuming. And it's not looking likely to be stopped by anti-trust laws. So I assume things will be as per usual for a while, but you'll see customer un-friendly tactics start to creep in over time. It's the way these things go, especially when assumed by that most evil of company categories: consumer electronic media delivery.

HAMSTERDAM SEES A CYCLOPS

575
Elephant_skull_jpg

That giant and beautiful bone structure there belongs to an African Elephant. But you can see why the ancient Greeks saw those skulls and created the myth around them of the Cyclops: The one-eyed man-eating giants from an island somewhere in the mysterious south or east of their known world. I love bone divining like this, there's several mythical creatures that probably had their start in dinosaur or unknown bones that were seen but misunderstood. Another favorite: the Griffin, a winged lion with the head of an eagle, is almost certainly conjured from the skeletons of the many Proceratops that once roamed the Near East, a beaked dinosaur with the size and build of a lion. More fun examples, to be sure, but it's time to Hamsterdam.

HAMSTERDAM WATCHES LOUIE

916

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-55wC5dEnc

Everybody should know, or know of, Louis C.K. at this point. He's probably still holding the crown as the best standup comic working right now by most peoples' thought. But I actually prefer his TV show. It is at so many times so different. Weird, poignant, funny, heartbreaking, it's got everything in there. And it's back tonight at 9pm on FX. The video above is one of my favorite scenes he's ever done. So much happens in that 8-minute scene that you can't unpack all of it in a 45-minute conversation. Just a picture-perfect, real conversation many men have but don't really want to completely have with eachother. Definitely NSFW.

HAMSTERDAM CAN'T FIND ANY DIMES

762

I could tell you that the reason I cribbed so much from the title of Mexican't's last Hamsterdam intro would be because of the recent confluence of a lot of Hamsterdam subjects (Mel Brooks, racism, etc) and horse-punching GIFs and the like, but really I just saw a pun waiting and I like puns. If you haven't already figured it out, the link is the tollbooth clip from BLAZING SADDLES. It's probably the tamest part of the movie, but all clips from that movie should probably considered NSFW. Happy Hamsterdamming, all.

HAMSTERDAM LIKES IT HARDCORE

744

The damn things only get released about every sixty days, but that exclusivity makes Dan Carlin's superb Hardcore History podcasts all the more desirable. Latest one went up yesterday, and the trailing last ten episodes are always free at his website linked above or your favorite podcasting site. I haven't heard the new one yet, so no spoilers!

HAMSTERDAM REMINDS YOU THAT CHER STARTED THE FIRE

725

Damn it, Cher. You started this. First you had to have that horrible song "Believe" hit #1 and have everyone go crazy trying to figure out how you did that annoying voice modulation in the chorus/title. Turns out the "Cher effect" (as it was originally known) was just working with autotune. Now We have hundreds of thousands of people thinking the "I AM T-PAIN" app on their phone is funny, or ruining the glory that was our intro to Antoine Dodson and Charles Ramsey by autotuning them into stupid songs. They were glorious before people thought ruining them with autotune made it funnier! It didn't! They were perfect before! Now they're annoying! DAMN IT CHER!!!!

HAMSTERDAM HAS POOPTHOUGHTS

Of course POOPTHOUGHTS would be this co-mayor's inevitable followup to SHOWERTHOUGHTS. If you have a few six-second increments to kill, you could do a heck of a lot worse than watching HFMR do his Vine thing. The man is a true Vine genius, check it out and be happy. Note: Most of his Vines require sound to get the joke, so you might have to do your viewing away from a work computer. https://vine.co/PoopThoughts

Somebody posted a Reddit Showerthoughts link in a previous Hamsterdam, thought I'd share some of my favorites and see if you guys like the link: "Can Chewbacca even say Chewbacca? Shouldn't his name be something like Rawwwraaraar?" "It would make more sense if 3 had the value of 4 because the number 3 looks like half of the number 8" "Pizza is always a pie chart about how much pizza is left." "Nature Valley bars make so many crumbs because they want you to eat them outside."
